This is the ad-free version of my latest video, where I walk you through the classic and timeless watercolor browns, blacks, and neutrals, with clear swatches, real examples of how I use them in animal, portrait, and fall landscape art, plus plenty of mixing demonstrations.

๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ–ค Browns, blacks, and neutrals are true workhorse colors in any palette. In my latest video, I take you through the whole family. We go from warm, earthy browns straight from the ground, to transparent reds perfect for skin tones and shadows, to one truly misunderstood neutral that can transform your other colors completely. I also swatch out a few super-granulating pigments for gorgeous texture. And for those of you who enjoy abstract art, I show you some shimmering, iridescent, and extra-textured pigments too.

As always, I've prepared a downloadable handout with all the swatches and suggested mixes, so you can keep it nearby as a handy reference while you paint ๐Ÿ‘‰ download the PDF file in this post: https://www.patreon.com/AnnaBucciarelli/posts/essential-browns-171233647

Anna, This is now my favourite of the swatch tutorials! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜The swatch videos and downloads are such a useful and enlightening addition to your channel. I will definitely be adding some colours to my palette this Christmas lol! I am really looking forward to the upcoming tutorial with all the fall red leaves and those beautiful birds โค๏ธ. Seeing the portraits in your video reminded me to ask you when we might get another portrait tutorial? I am really, really hoping for another one! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป. Also, I would like to request some more wildlife in your tutorials, please, like bears, deer, a leopard, whale or orca, otters, a cockatoo or eagle, koala, kingfisher, etc. Lastly, thank you for so much amazing and beneficial content! You are such an excellent teacher and I love your Patreon channel. โค๏ธ

Thank you so much Monalisa - this was such a wonderful series to work on, I found lots of new favorites myself along the way, and so happy to hear you enjoyed it. I am working on the Fall Birds tutorial this week, look forward to seeing your versions! As far as portraits go, my biggest challenge is finding a copy right free image that I am legally allowed to use (I can't use say celebrity images) and that would be useful as a learning tool (good shadows, no make up etc). My usual sources like Unspash are quite limited (I regularly search to see if I can find something but so far I haven't seen anything usable). It is definitely on the back of my mind - would love to do an adult face, unlike our first tutorial, maybe something with more wrinkles / different skin tone etc. It's on my mind for sure! Thank you fo your support and have a wonderful week ahead!

Thank you Kay! As it turns out - PR206 is being discontinued (several people alerted me to this on Youtube after I posted this review), so if you can find some stock in your local art store I would definitely get a tube! โค๏ธ

Thanks for letting me know Anna. I have managed to to get a tube. I am in the UK and Jackson and CassArt both still have some tubes left

Anna, I take this opportunity of this demo to ask you what brush would be better to soft the edges according to the damp brush tecnic ? Thank you so much for your kind reply ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒท

Isadarena

Thanks so much Anna for letting us know all these beautiful colors ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿงก

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Isadarena, Great question, thank you! For softening edges with the damp brush technique, natural sable brushes work best. They hold just the right amount of water and spring back nicely, which gives you a lot of control as you lift and blend those edges. Synthetic sable works too but it's a bit too stiff (will take time to get used to). Squirrel brushes (either natural or synthetic) also work well, but keep in mind they are much softer compared to sable in general, so they release water more quickly and can feel a bit floppier as you work. Just be sure to blot well so your brush is damp, not wet. At the end of the day i prefer real sable OR synthetic-real sable blend like the Chronos brush from Escoda (much cheaper than real sable.) I actually wrote a detailed post about my favorite brushes a while back, and I think youโ€™ll find it really helpful. Itโ€™s balanced and takes into account whether you prefer natural hair or synthetic options: https://www.patreon.com/posts/110912883 ๐ŸŒท Happy Painting! Anna. P.S. Thank you so much Anna, for your nice message but I must admit that I don't know where I can sed you a message on Patreon. I'm going to watch your video about your preferences about brushes Many thanks again ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ™

Anna Bucciarelli

The Direct Message Feature would be on the left - a little speech bubble - it gies directly to me email so I don't miss it :) Thank you!
