Hi All! I am excited to finally reveal our December tutorial / study plan and it's a real holiday special** In follow up to last year's "Partridge in a Pear Tree",  I put together a composition with "Two Turtle Doves" ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ + Christmas Cactus {Schlumbergera} flowers ๐ŸŒต๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŽ„

This week, we will start with a Christmas Cactus tutorial as a separate stand-alone composition { Thank You to everyone who proposed this topic!} I will have it on 9 x 12 size paper as a single pink flower with some leaves. Very straightforward and beginner-friendly watercolor! Just like Poinsettias, these it makes for a lovely holiday card, and I hope you enjoy it.

And for those of you who are into larger intricate compositions, we will have "2 Turtle Doves" released in chapters, starting next week. This will be a 12 x 12 {or bigger if you want} and will get into some fun glazing techniques.

Special THANK YOU to everyone who painted the "Partridge in a Pear Tree" and shared your work on Facebook  - my favorite thing is seeing your interpretations, and you've inspired to continue the series. No, I have no idea how I will do the Eight maids a-milking โ˜บ๏ธ I do look forward to the swans and the geese though!

**I was dismayed to discover last week that there are literally NO good turtle dove reference photos on any of my go-to sources like Unsplash, Pixabay or even a paid site like wildlifereferencephotos.com  {if you are aware of any other sites - please let me know}. Of course, I was committed to creating this illustration for us, so you will see me use a regular white and brown dove silhouettes and "build" the coloring up based on a few copyright free images I could find and my best understanding of this breed and its unique coloring.

I take a while with these compositions - my goal to create something unique that you can't find anywhere else. Sometimes it means hours of image searching, sketching, erasing and sketching again - no different from how I work on Canadian coin designs, each takes about a month to design:) It also means my tutorial "to-do" list keeps growing! But please do keep sending your suggestions, I wouldn't be able to come up with this one without you! I appreciate your patience and support.

See you all "virtually" later this week with an our of Cactus flower painting!

Pink? Iโ€™m there ๐Ÿ˜ do you know website Paint my Photo? https://pmp-art.com/ You need to make an account but itโ€™s free. Lots of good stuff. And also Free Reference Photos for Artists- a facebook group is absolutely amazing.

This project looks beautiful and bright and brillant.. your works are all unique and i can see how much of you .. you put into each of them.. Im new to you on Patron.. and im really excited to try this upcoming project. I would like to say when im following you on your tutorialsโ€ฆ sometimes you forget to tell us if you wet the paper first or if you paint it on dryโ€ฆ. I know you are being open so we each can develop our own styleโ€ฆ however i think you need to give more detailed instructions.. there are often times where there is silence.. no instuctions at all.. im sure if you rewatch in your editing.. you can have more to say.. on technique, or the paint consistency or a million other tips you know.. and that we Your students want you to share with us.. no more silence .. no more fast forwarding on the tutorialsโ€ฆ. Thanks

I like where this is going. Next year three french hens? Something to look forward to!

Anna Bucciarelli

Definitely French hens:) A bit easier than doves in a way I think {maybe because i've done roosters and hence in the past}

Thank you for your support and thoughtful feedback, Devra! I am definitely not guarding my secrets but I am guessing you may referring to my earlier videos from 2021, when I was just starting Patreon and SkillShare , learning what works best for tutorial format. In the first ~ 6-12 months I was quite unsure how much explanation to get into, and whether or not the full footage in real time would even be useful. Over time, as my following grew and more feedback started coming in, I've learned to slow down, add continuous detailed narration with extra tips throughout - and even pigment labels. I trust you find the difference in the 2022 videos which are much much longer and fully detailed. In addition, the quality of video has gone up as I was able to afford a better lense, thank you my Patrons. With regard to pre-wetting the paper, I almost never do this, but when I do I explicitly mention it now. In retrospect, I may need to remove the first few months of tutorials to avoid creating any confusion / frustration.

OOHHHH THANK YOU - I will fully explore both because ... I may need a good variety of bougainvillea and gladiolus references soon ....ahem... :) โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ

Yay! I just started the partridge! I absolutely love your tutorials and how explicit you are but also provide options if we're looking for a more beginner friendly process. Please DO NOT delete the earlier tutorials! If we have questions we can ask but I beliebe that 1. They are still invaluable and since you're very responsive we can just ask for clarifications and 2. they really chronicle your journey as a content creator. If anything you could just add a disclaimer saying how in the beginning you weren't sure about what to include etc. and remind us to ask questions (which you already do!) I've done the cherries, lotus flower, the leaves, Chinese lanterns, a few skillshare classes (bc I already had access), pink orchids, and the tiger. Now I'm doing the partridge and the deer and want to both grapes & the black swan next month. Long story long lol... the earlier ones build a foundation for the more complex ones that come later (I started with the newer ones and decided to go back to start again on the less complicated projects - I can't explain how helpful that was!) So please please don't delete them ๐Ÿ˜ฌ ๐Ÿ™ โ˜บ๏ธ

Did you try iStock for references? They have some beautiful shots of turtle doves. Also, I didn't know they were so colorful! This will be fun - can't wait!

Iโ€™m glad youโ€™re back and your surgery went well! Will you be posting the line drawings for this tutorial?
