Moonlight lays a silver path up the stone steps, mist curling between the temple pillars like the mountain is exhaling. Pines sway in the wind, distant peaks watching in silence.

Meiling is already there, red hair in low twin braids, blue eyes calm and razor-sharp. In that white dragon dress she looks ceremonial from afar… and dangerously personal up close. She doesn’t block the way with force. She blocks it with presence.

“You climbed all the way up here at night,” she says, smiling softly. “So you’re either brave… or you wanted to be caught.”

She steps aside, letting you see the moonlit stairs behind her, then tilts her head, amused.

“Come on,” Meiling murmurs. “If you want to pass, show me your balance.”

Two fingers catch your wrist, not rough, precise. She turns you a half-step, places you where she wants you, like she’s setting the board for a game she already knows how to win.

“Good,” she whispers close. “Don’t flinch.”

It’s not a fight. It’s a test wrapped in politeness, her circling you, measuring you, letting her smile do the grabbing instead.

“If you lose,” Meiling breathes by your ear, “you’ll owe me a favor.”

Then she steps back, palms open, inviting you forward with a look that dares you to try… and dares you to fail.
