Half in the Bag: Everything Everywhere All At Once

Mike and Jay take a break in between fixing Mr. Plinkett's VCR to review a movie that came out 3 years ago: Everything Everywhere All At Once! I hope everyone has had the chance to finally see this film! WARNING: Video may contain coarse language, smoking, drug use, and Mike talking about Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Yes! I’ve been looking forward to this for a while. Thank you all for giving it press!

Benway23

Thank you for your work.

omg you guys should do a re:view for Rocky since Jay brought it up

Steve Can Still Believe

The raccoon in this movie is made from an actual racoon corpse just taxidermied and made into an animatronic.

You guys as always hit the nail on the head. I definitely resonated a lot with Evelyn and Joy plot but the lol random/length held me back a bit.

Carly

IM SO HAPPY YOU DID THIS AAAAAAHH 😍

Amanda Foster

Of course this gets uploaded the night my kid insists she sleeps in my bedroom. The second she falls asleep I’m watching this!

Joy: Nothing matters 😡 Evelyn: Nothing matters 🥰 Mike & Jay: Nothing matters 🍻

This movie reminded me that I hate multiverse stories because any story structure falls apart when can just pop over to a different universe to fix things. It reminds me of time travel stories that aren't closed loops and are full of paradoxes (which I also hate).

I just want my kids back EDIT: Parallels is nowhere near the worst episode of TNG! Come on, Mike. First off, I love Worf comedy, and we get some good Worf comedy. Second, there's the first season of TNG. Third, there are so many other episodes of TNG (Sub Rosa, Up the Long Ladder, Shades of Gray. I could go on, and I almost listed Masks, but Masks is so bad it's funny). Oh and fourth, it was used for that great TNG Edits video with Data painting the, um, explicit horse...

Dominic O'Neill

Loved this film. Completely lived up to the hype for me.

This is one of those instances where I wish you guys would go ahead and spoil stuff because I'd love to hear a deep dive on the characters and themes but FINE. While I do agree with Mike's point about the latter third having multiple resolutions and going on a bit too long I still really really loved it and I'm happy that so many other people are responding to it so strongly. I think you both might have enjoyed it more if you saw it in theatres, it was one of the best movie going experiences of my life. I also just watched this video which makes a good point on why it might have especially resonated with people a little younger: https://youtu.be/VvclV0_o0JE But I mean, the theme of finding hope in the knowledge that nothing matters in the end, that everything matters in each moment, that every path taken closes off infinite others, that our bodies will decay and civilizations will collapse and the universe will reach maximum entropy and somehow we can find and experience love in spite of that, that maybe love means more _because_ of that, is something that I think everyone can relate to.

would I regret watching this video before the movie? it's been on my watchlist for a while but I haven't gotten around to it yet

Notation

I felt the same way. It's a sincerely 8/10 in a world of 2/10 movies. So, it's much much better than average, but I'd hesitate to call it a "great" film. However, if great films are so rarely made, perhaps the distinction doesn't matter, and it is in fact a great film.

I don't think a positive message is possible in a multiverse movie, only if you lie to your audience. for every alternative universe where "family and love" triumphs, there are those in which everyone is miserable and your decisions only lead to tragedy. they just decided to not show that and it's a really fake copout for a positive message. I was not able to feel that "at least there is love even in the most useless universe", because if you're honest, there IS an alternate universe of THAT where even love loses out.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but now I kind of want to, seems fun enough. The inspirations of Matrix and Stephen Chow, as well as the theme of multiple dimensions and third eyes all go back to buddhist lore. Funnily enough, the Matrix sequels dealt more with spirituality in a less approachable way. Contrast with another Keanu Reeves, "Little Buddha" for obvious parallels (not talking action scenes). "Opening one's third eye" in this context means that someone has higher understanding of spiritual teachings. The scene where Michelle Yeoh sticks that goggly eye to her forehead seems important. So is Buddha replacing Jesus?

Judging from the clips from Everything Everwhere All At Once the movie is so fast-paced and visually rich that it would exhaust me pretty fast, and that's a bummer, because judging from the discussion of the movie, I should watch the movie.

schopi

Hm.... I usually try to watch the movies on HitB but this time..... Don't know why exactly but I have the same attitude towards this as the guys have towards The Batman. Everybody and their grandmother tell me how good it is but I somehow can't be arsed to watch it.....

Manuel Johnen

This has James Hong in it, so it must be seen.

Manuel Johnen

Great, now Mike's doing the enraged internet nerd voice, too...

Jash

I finally joined the patreon. Am I in a cult now?

Mike - in Parallels, I recall it was proximity to Geordi’s visor, not Worf’s choices, that were causing him to shift universes. Maybe check with Rich?

Michael Parker

Y'know I missed when Mike would try to gauge wether or not a movie was suitable for your grandmother. I'm glad this review brought that back.

Mario R

I want a print of that original artwork of the Gang at 11:44. Chefs kiss!!

Peter Kelly

That Nicolas Cage film is genuinely quite good

The Cult of the Wyrm

You guys can call him Short Round but he will always be Data to me.

John Schmulowitz

I feel the same way as jay. I liked the movie but I didn’t love it.

James Murphy

Slightly random are you guys gonna review mad god

Damon Killian

I can't say I understood it completely, I felt like I was watching Primer if it was directed by Steven Chow. The Nic Cage thing was a dud for me.
