The One Piece anime is currently very close to a huge reveal which will probably be all over the internet and social media! I'm sure your editors have already let you know to be on the look out, but i thought id leave a warning anyway!

Here come my fav girll , been waiting ❤️

I don’t really get the people who don’t support trans/any lgbtq , while watching one piece cuz it Soo Supportive to it

Ethan Price

Fun fact: Oda actually based Bon and Iva off his real life best friends who are okama and perform shows like he did. Some of my favorite and most goated characters of this arc.

manzanno

some of the queer representation is definitely faulty but its definitely coming frome a misguided place rather than a hateful one, given all the really good representation in the show otherwise. But apart from a few things, the kamabakka island is honestly the only example of harmful representation. I highly suggest watching Melontee's Queer analysis to the show once you're at like ep 950 approx

Sam

Preach. Let people be, they ain't hurting anyone. If you feel it affects you somehow then check yourself!

EnokiNoel

This is actually incredible, Iva really reminded me of a drag queen and I ate that up

Didnt even realize the white hair when I watched it on my own time, lowkey crazy pull Oda. Dont know if thats what he meant but thats crazy. The representation overall is decent, a tad harmful in how Kamabaka kingdom is. But overall the message is very good, and later in the show I feel it gets better.

One of my long time vocal stims originated in this episode. Everytime someone says “Hang in there” it takes everything within me to not start repeatedly screaming it. This line is up there with “I want to live!” In terms of I can hear it with my soul.

Bigots are kind of known for lacking media literacy lmao. It's like those people being fan of Green Day and not realizing they're the "American Idiots"

S.E.W.

If you're familiar at all with Tim Curry in Rocky Horror picture Show, Iva was very much inspired by Frank n Furter

Saya Scarlet

Iva's design is very Rocky Horror Picture Show. Ate that shit right up lmao

Saya Scarlet

"So your father wanted to become a woman. What is wrong with that?" Rip my fucking eardrums, but loved the reaction XD Also, not Luffy dying and begging for Bon's life, just as he did for Nami's before T_T

GPM

Woot woot!!!! Iva!!!! One of my fav characters..... I hope they get Ru Paul for iva.... or at least one of the all star winners for the live action. Also wish Japanese and more words than just okama.... that is their word for gay, trans, and drag queen..... so makes the identity confusing for some one piece characters on their self identities.... I know Oda meant zero offense with bon clay or Iva though some of the other Okama are rough in their depictions especially the ones Sanji is with right now....

pierre pennaneach

on the original (not one pace version) you really see how deep bon clay goes in he's really dancing for those 9/10 hours and you can really see the dedication that takes as a person and a friend

Onlythree

He meant it as in he put too much poison on his food

Piero

The "you can even call me poo" is so funny on the english dub, it's "You can even call me dookie... NNNNEVER CALL ME DOOKIEEE"

ShinOokami

came here to highlight this

Devon Ritchie

My goat bon clay was out there for the whole ten hours never once stopping. It was a true friend being so supportive in whatever way he could

Joe Vocaire

Happy Pride! (I’m watching this in June on my bday!) 🏳️‍🌈

Ender

Love that you always say "Period, dot, blank" and then keep yapping XD never change

Ender

The trans representation started off bad, got better and will still become better the further you go into One Piece! Oda was ahead of his time dropping trans in manga in early 2000 even with questionable representation was a big step into "normalizing" that topic in a time where the movement just started to get momentum. Then 2009 Impel down released and you can already see that Oda might have his flaws but no ill intend towards lgbtq. Later on you will see his depiction in the latest years in about episodes 900-1000 which are very progressive if you ask me. And this all as you recognized in the Shounen jump? Not sure how many authors could have done that in the conservative Japan back in 2000 - 2010. People, especially the trans community often judge Oda too harsh because 20 years ago was a way different time.

codexero_

Oda brought the NewKama topic to light with the background that Ivan is formidable, which shounen readers could understand and slowly accept.

Pedro Pages

The closest that the "sun" has come to rising in Luffy. If we taking into consideration where Luffy is now at his peak.

Pedro Pages

"Maybe its just the Devil Fruit!" 😳😱 I know you meaning for Ivankov but damn, for those who know, ikyk

Drew Radie

Another thing to keep in mind was the climate of the world at the time. These episodes are 16 years old (2010), and Bon Clay was introduced 24 years ago (2002). Gay and trans acceptance, even in most progressive nations was limited to "you won't be persecuted if you make it easy to ignore." Examples, "Don't Ask / Don't Tell" wasn't repealed until September of 2011. At the time this episode was released, New Hampshire had just legalized same-sex marriage, making them the fifth state to do so. Choosing to have characters represent the LGBT community was CERTAINLY a choice, especially in Japan where, to this day, same-sex marriage is not recognized. Choosing to make them absolute badasses integral to the story and fan favorites during that time means that Oda gambled his life's work to stand on his beliefs of equality. 12 years into the manga at this point, already one of the most successful mangaka of all time, and a bad reception would put Luffy's future at risk far more than Magellan's poison ever could.
