*VAGUE SPOILERS* Garp is a very human character, and i think he's a good example how even people or good or understandable intentions can tread the wrong path. He's stood on the sidelines of many- MANY an injustice. We haven't quite gotten this far yet, but for me, his character writing starts to break down a bit as you go further into the story and find out just how bad some of the stuff that he participated in was, and how long he's been complicit (god valley specifically).

Hard to respond to this without spoilers. I'll just say that I don't think that's his character writing breaking down. I think it's a very intentional choice to show us both Garp's complicity AND his severe case of cognitive dissonance.
