Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a student with an unflinching desire for popularity. Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, their relationship soon reaches a crossroad as their lives begin to take very different paths.

I have a lot to say about this movie. First of all, I loved your reaction. Wicked is the prequel to the Wizard of Oz, which in a weird way, I’m glad you haven’t seen it because your reaction to finding out that the wizard is a fraud was so good. The fact that neither Cynthia Orivo or Ariana Grande got an Oscar for their roles in this movie will forever piss me off, but part 2 is coming out in November so they’d better make it right at the Oscars next year. While I have seen The Wizard of Oz many times since I was a kid, I didn’t know much about Wicked as a whole. I knew it was a play, which by the way, the two ladies singing over each other were Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith who played Elphaba and Glinda on broadway originally. The only reason I know some of the songs is because Glee covered like four of the songs over the course of the series, which Idina and Kristin guest starred in as well. I do recommend watching The Wizard of Oz because this movie gave a lot of Easter eggs to the original story. There are a lot of adaptations, but the 1939 musical is the most popular one. Side note: there’s also an all black version of the Wizard of Oz called The Wiz with Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow.

Siiii 😭 that's Anthony Bridgerton!! 😍 he's so great in this. And yes! They built the library, most of the sets were practical. The train to Oz, even all the tulips in the beginning they planted fr. Amazing right? OMG I just finished Defying Gravity, that was such a great reaction 😭 I'm over here crying right with you. She barely started the song and you were already emotional. 😫 and I agree! It really is so well-made. Pretty much a whole bunch of theatre kids got together and poured everything into this masterpiece 💚💖

That dance scene is something fuckin else. Not everyone gets it but you got it and I loved it so muchhhhh

I love that you haven't seen the Wizard of Oz and went into this not knowing a lot of things, I didn't know that's what we were gonna witness. I do hope you watch Wizard of Oz too, so you get the rest of the story. It isn't beautiful like this, but is just a classic story. Maybe after the second part of Wicked comes out in November so you can finish Wicked first

Thank you for your reaction to this epic fanfiction turned adopted cannon prequel to the Wizard of Oz. I read the Wicked books (like the 2 movies I enjoyed more than the Wizzard of Oz books) when they came out when I was a kid (would not recommend allowing a child to read them) and many years later I saw the musical. I got to say, as much as I HATE Galinda/Glinda (always have since the Wizard of Oz movie/books), AG did a great job in her role (I personally believe both these ladies did much better than all others who played those roles in the last 20 years on Broadway, including the originals)! To me Galinda/Glinda will always be the villain (well, the overarching villain of Oz, though it is the Wizzard and Morrible who are the main villains of Wicked part 1). The only semi redeeming quality of Galinda/Glinda is her "friendship" with Elphaba, which has been 100% transactional from the beginning when Galinda cleaned up the mess of her cruel prank at the Ozdust ballroom not out of genuine kindness or remorse but after finding out Elphaba handed her the one thing she wanted most, to learn sorcery from Madame Morrible! Elphaba, who has never had a friend before, believed Galinda's gifts and "friendship" were truly genuine. Then, once they got to the Emerald city and saw haw corrupt and evil both the wizard and Morrible were, Glinda gaslights and abandons Elphaba to side with the fascists immediately after they publicly insult and vilify Elphaba. So, Galinda gets no kudos from me for her actions at the Ozdust, nor does Glinda get the benefit of the doubt in the Emerald City Glinda because she never planned to leave with Elphaba, that was clear in her expression before she called away to grab the cloak.

"This would sound amazing live" You should go see the broadway show :) Also the women who play 'the wise ones' in the Emerald City play were the original actresses for Wicked on broadway

Saying wizard of oz isn't beautiful like this is kinda crazy seeing as how it's so vibrant

Hi i’m a little late, but just wanted to add that ari and cynthia were both singing live for the movie, their songs are not prerecorded, they were mic-ed up during the scenes. So this for me just added to their incredible performances, they both deserved their oscar nom 🤗

Turn Up the Mike
