Hey folks, fellow worms and bugs alike, apologies for the divide (lol), but this album was much more dense than I expected, and I felt myself fading off, and y'all know I wanna be my most present for albums like this, so we're gonna pick it back up on Wednesday at 12 EST on Twitch. If you can't join us there, the stream will be here afterwards :) Thanks for the understanding y'all

Lexie B

So excited to get into this! 🩶

Julia

Ive been stalking your patreon all day waiting for this!!

Eevaliisa H.

Haven't watched the video yet, but it really is a heavy album to react to on stream in its full form, it was a lot to get through emotionally alone in my livingroom. Can't imagine having people watch me at the same time 😂😭 good that you listened to yourself, it's better to put 2 parts and be 100% there than to post 1 video and not really enjoying yourself.

Richa B

Been waiting for this!!! Can't wait to see your reactions

Allison

This put into words exactly what I was thinking so thank you!

Ava

I can’t wait for dashboard

nick :3

i am glad that you recognized that sonically all of the songs sound so similar. it's not necessarily a critique because i do like a majority of them, but it means that the fatigue of trying to digest everything at once gets so monotonous and boring tbh. i feel that with a lot of his songs even though i'm a huge fan, and i'm a little disappointed on the production on this album because i did kinda feel a bit let down due to the similarity of the songs throughout. i'm excited to watch part 2 on wed once it's posted!

Taylor Stiles

I totally get what you’re saying! I am gunna listen over and over, but it’s a lot. Still amazing, but stick season had some relief or even comedic relief sort of?

TheBestCheesecake

I get your vibe on this album 100%. Stick Season was melodically, lyrically, and production-wise very unique. Every song had a flavor that came together to make a delicious, whole album. The Great Divide all just feels like one or two flavors. There is nothing wrong with that! I really like a few songs, but it isn't the same experience and banger as Stick Season was. Your initial thoughts were very spot on. It feels demo-y, within his comfort zone of music. But hey, that's why music changes and ebbs. I am lucky enough to find his music and have it mean a lot to me, that's a gift.

Melanie Martinez

noah writing an entire album from the POV of people around him / his siblings and parents is so cool. all of us who overthink and make assumptions about our close ones perspective of us are sobbinggggg

Jenny

I think part of the appeal and also difficulty with Noah’s music is that you can relate your own issues and traumas to it because it doesn’t spell it out so explicitly. It’s intentionally vague enough. I expect that also would make it harder for anyone who is trying to listen and “react” for entertainment because you don’t owe anyone how you relate to this kind of music or interpret it, so it would likely drain you pretty quickly. While us in chat are discussing freely how each lyric in each song reminds us of a specific family trauma, you have to digest these song and lyrics and be fully present for entertainment value. It’s not surprising it made you fade, it was a good place to pause. Now we get called back in with the porch light.

I had to listen to the album multiple times before being able to truly understand and appreciate it. It’s one of those albums where (to me at least) they all sound very similar until you get a chance to get deep into either the intended meaning of the song or your own personal meaning you end up attributing to it. Most of the songs are written from other peoples POVs of Noah, and how his family felt when he laid their dirty laundry out for the world in Stick Season. Also that guilt he feels from moving away and not being about to reconcile that disconnection he created with them. I don’t think the documentary should be used as a way to understand this album. I think the documentary was a way for Noah to express his gratitude to his family and his fans, whilst finally acknowledging how it has all really changed his life. It’s definitely more self reflective instead of self deprecating like the album is.

I highly recommend watching his interview with Jay Shetty for On Purpose. He goes in depth about his mental health and having obsessive compulsive disorder - more recently diagnosed. I’m not sure but 23 might actually be about his OCD - we wake up in the morning hoping it’s gone…trying to lift the weight of it away. And we just want it to stay gone. That was my first thought during my first listen as someone who has it. And I’m still very worried about the horses in all them horses. It’s the saddest banger I’ve ever heard. 😭😭😭

angela a

never listened to noah kahan like that but the micro is hitting and need some new tunes

Big Skrimp

I will say, my first listen to, I had the same feeling man. Every song kind of melted into each other sonically. I had it on in the background and it was honestly just okay first listen. But what really sets this record apart for me is the revisitations. It's an interesting one for sure, it's like one big pretty mess, with a little bit of everything for everyone with that classic folk pop sound. I've personally fallen in love with it because of that, like I fucking love the idea that my top 3 songs are guaranteed to be a lot of people's bottom 3 songs because of how different some of these tracks are thematically Overall I'd give it like a 7.5-8/10, it's good, its just... A lot.

Aimee B

Just starting so i'm not sure if you're getting to it in part one but we go way back reminded me of you and angela 💕🫶🏻

Aimee B

Sammy fender would be a perfect feature on american cars

Lena EL-Merhebe

I’ll put my alarm to tune into part 2!!! This album is so heavy. Written from the pov of so many of the people around him and not himself is a lot to dissect. I’m a massive fan of this album and can’t wait to see the rest of the reaction! Take care of yourself Troy! Thanks for all you do 🩷

Rose H

A lot of artists seem to be prioritizing lyrics over melody these days, and I think that's where Noah ended up with this album. I had to turn off this album multiple times because it felt so stagnant, musically. It took 3 listens to get through. But some of this is personal preference - I love artists that are constantly playing with different soundscapes (e.g., Djo). This album feels like a plug and play "folk pop" to me.

David Kastner

I also didn't get through from start to finish. It's overwhelming and it's good you take some time.

Moon

This one was def hard to take in on the first listen, but upon re-listen where Noah’s music is meant to be played (in the car, with the windows down) I definitely came around to it. Willing and Able, Dashboard, All Them Horses have been on repeat since.

Isabella Astudillo

Noah recently said in an interview that “Haircut” is from the perspective of the people who live in his hometown reacting to the tourism and fame Noah has brought to the town. Or at least what he believes is their perspective. He tells himself that he’s done good for the town, but deep down he believes that they resent him for bringing fame to their small town.

Katie Sigurdson

I think haircut is written from the perspective of his home town and showing what he’s scared they all might think about him. Like using his hometown’s trauma to get famous and then he’s trying to make good from it and give back but what if they’re like hey dude you’re not Jesus Christ just cause you cried on live TV we don’t need your help

Katie Sigurdson

but hey, “help me if it helps you sleep”

🌜myahlu🌛

I started my first listen through at midnight and on my way home after a 12 hour shift at work. I was UNWELL pulling into my driveway.

🌜myahlu🌛

Also - this album could have just been titled “Myah dealing with her no-contact alcoholic, drug addicted father”

Sarah Morley

No worries, i needed a break too. It definitely had me in my feels. I enjoyed listening to the first half of the album with everyone on Twitch and I’ll be there Wednesday ✨

Billy

i also had to listen to this album in two parts, its heavy

flowerchilde851

ngl, when Troy was telling Noah he was being mean to his friend--that hit me in the feels. The first time someone did that to me, about myself, I was so unbelievably thrown off. It was a coworker that I was close with, only at work if that makes sense, and I was telling her one of the negative/mean thoughts I have about myself and I think it took her by crazy surprise but without missing a beat she calmly said, "Hey, can you not talk about my friend that way?" and holy SHIT that hit me so fucking hard. It was like three years ago and I still think about it all of the time and it makes me cry most of the time. I told my husband about how it affected me so now he throws that at me every now and then. "Don't talk about my wife that way." It hits the book girlie in me but also reminds me to not talk about myself that way. I still do, but I talk about it in therapy lol All of this to sayyy, thank you Troy for popping that line in here about Noah and, in turn, reminding us all to be kind to ourselves.

Mia H

Myah AND Mia! A collab! <3

Rachel Simmet

Subbed to the Patreon just for this. 😃

Erin

I feel you on how dense it is, I’ve accidentally mentally checked out like halfway through every time I’ve tried to listen to this!

tilde karlsson

hello im new here and trying to join the discord but it wont work, any tips and tricks?

Jessica Pendergraph

I liked the reaction to the last album a lot more because you actually paid attention to the lyrics. This just felt like you put Noah’s album on in the background to do a standup routine and play guitar. I literally only joined Patreon for you and your reaction to this album because your last one felt so genuine. Not getting that here.

Holly WouldNot

the more you listen, the more you love it. it’s not instant!

Ruby T

YES YOU DECIDED TO DO ITTTT

Adam Baze

"They're turning your house into a parking lot" ----What?!! No! No! LMAO

Annette House

23 is one of those where if you know or have a similar experience to what it’s talking about, it’s instant. But for anyone I know who thankfully hasn’t had that, it isn’t one of the most devastating songs on the album. So it does make sense that it kinda broke your brain and honestly I’m glad for that.

Helen

“almost selfishly sad” is such a good description for the album

Logan Mills

The concept of writing a whole album analyzing every choice, hang up, or life situation ever that has ever caused a physical or emotional divide between you and any person you’ve ever loved and making us all suffer and think about it in the context of our own lives. Cruel. I will be sending Mr. Kahan my therapy bill

Alice

no idea if anyone’s said this but any millennial from VT knows that specific ice storm that he sang about in doors, you either have it as your first memory or it’s been so burned into your brain that you will never forget it, that line was so for us. I SCREAMED and sent my dad a screenshot of the lyrics

alondra

love that when you said he'd introduce dashboard as a diss to himself and call himself an asshole a lot of chat agreed that that is definitely how he'd introduce it

Rebecca McCormick

Haven’t seen pt 2 yet, but I’m so glad you are saving porch light for refreshed time!

Molly

Willing and Able makes me think of my sisters. Their relationship has been rough the last few years. They fought growing up too, so I see it as like- we used to fight like sisters do. Now we have tension we don’t talk about. Wish we could just fight like we used to so it could be out in the open, but we don’t bond or see each other often enough to get into it. I want to fight with you to fight for you. Idk if that’s what he was going for but it’s where I go.

Alfie Radcliffe

Wow I want a Mumford and sons album reaction now

Alexia 🫶🏻

I will never get over people that can just pick up instruments and play things after a few listens🥴 talent out the ass man

Jenny

Lighthouse hit a little too close to home cause my family in Maine literally had a huge parking lot built right up to their house in the middle of the woods that they tried to protest and stop but it happened anyways and only gets used for like 2 months of the year for tourism

Hannah Tan

i think the documentary he released on netflix really gave me a perspective of his mental health struggles and how he was feeling about himself when he wrote his songs. i get why he’s so sad all the time and it makes me sad 😔

Eliya Elizabeth

I immediately clocked the emotional heaviness of this when it first came out and haven’t listened to it fully till now for that reason. Got through to American Cars which absolutely devastated me and is def the one I connected to the most. It makes it easier having ppl to listen to it with to be that emotional support for each other <3

Morgan Violet

Okay 23 meant so much to me when I heard it so I’m gonna try to share my thoughts on when I listen and hopefully it makes sense! First I immediately thought of it as the angry prequel or sibling to orange juice because orange juice always sounded hopeful and hesitant to me with the hoping they’ll visit and overcompensating and just trying to make them comfortable after so long away but 23 is more angry and avoidant. The lyric “naive to believe you would come back and see if I could finally take you” reads to me like wanting to see if he can finally beat him in a fight now that they’re older like all kid siblings do but he’s grown up and accepted he’s not coming back and it was stupid to dream about. Then in the chorus when he says “sprinting my way past your bedroom, lifting the weight of you off my mind” is literally just pure avoidance. he’s sprinting past the bedroom so he doesn’t stop and think about him too much cus it’s heavy on him. then he says “cause if I never see you again you could be anything I want, 23 clean in the engine heat… stay gone” he’s saying as long as he stays gone he can imagine him sober and still busy being his brother and the post chorus TO ME sounds like he’s begging him to just stay how he remembers him so he doesn’t have to accept how he’s changed. Then the tattooed initial lyric, I thought of it as he sees his initials and thinks of him when he drinks as a reminder to think about him and so that he won’t drink too much. And also the “I still ball up my fists when they mention your name” is so important to me bc in my mind balling up your fists is something you see kids doing like to me that reads young/immature(?) bc he is the younger brother and he still acts a little naive or innocent when people talk about his brother. Hearing this song makes me personally think about my dad who was/is a raging abusive alcoholic and just that feeling of holding on the good memories while trying to avoid the bad ones. My dad coincidentally also used to show me things about his car and talk to me while I sat on the hood and watched but then he also doesn’t recognize me when I pass him in the store. Then I refuse to say hi because it hurts and I don’t want to acknowledge it, and thats why I think the post chorus is him begging his brother to just stay gone so he doesn’t have to face the changes and the bad parts and who his brother is now. And I feel like certain phrases and words just really hit that “younger avoidant sibling that always feels stupid and naive” chord in me. lol like the chat said this album is indeed for the avoidants but hopefully some of this made sense and helped or just let someone get a new perspective :) <3

Aliyah

haven’t watched the video yet, but if you don’t like this album, I’m gonna sob and crash out

Aliyah

I don’t understand the criticism of the songs in an album staying in one genre… Like OK what do you want?

Morgan

I just realized that 05072 is also from Howling

Mac

Bruh deep

Leon Bryden

Noah is literally that song writer that goes "oh? You've been feeling sad and missing people? Here I have like a whole albums worth of those songs. Go cry it out babes" I love him 😂

Chevonne

You’re gonna like these WAY more when u start understanding them! Eg. Clocking that 99% of the time he’s writing from a different perspective, towards himself 🥹 makes it so heartbreaking

joslyn cole

every video I watch of troy's, I go, there's no way he makes a one piece reference from this one... I am wrong every time

Sarah

“I could do without downfall” AFTER DINGING IT 😅😅 best song on the album for me

Andi

My sister and I decided that Stick Season is for all the kids who stayed home and The Great Divide is for all the kids who left home
