welp, looks like we've stumbled across a gem in time, folks. This movie was so perfect, it reminded me of the classicness and humor from Princess Bride (one of Angie's favs). I had such a blast watching and dissecting the filmmaking. so goofy, but so serious, so niche, yet so approachable, SO SCARY yet somewhat wholesome (kidnapping normalized?). I loved it, and I hope you enjoy it!

Amy McGlade

I’m working for another 3 hours 😭😭but I’ll be watching after. I absolutely can’t wait.

MarshmellowVirgil

The way Sarah and Jareth were supposed to kiss at some point, but Bowie refused because the actress for Sarah was underage. I have so much respect for Bowie for that.

Takara

Angie has taste!! this and the princess bride are in my top 4 movies on letterboxd. Been one of my favs since childhood. I used to watch it once a day....... so apologies in advance for how many times I comment on this post

Takara

the person who was 'juggling' the crystal ball had to stand behind Bowie and stick their arms through the cape, so they couldn't see what they were doing!

Takara

immediately being obsessed with Ludo - SO REAL!!!!!!

Chandler

The immediate horror at the Firey gang, totally valid lmfao

Elissa Goetschius

Toby was played by Toby Froud who was the child of the artist who designed the goblins, Brian Froud. You should also check out the original movie of The Dark Crystal. No songs, but it's fantastic. No humans in that one.

Takara

At the masquerade/ballroom scene he's just trying to make her forget her mission! He's painting a dream for her. That's my favorite song of the movie, the lyrics EATTTTTT!!!

Takara

"a goblin city looks like italy" bro what lmaooooooo

Chandler

They overstuffed Jareth’s tights because they thought it was funny.

Chandler

Also, had me thinking that you should definitely watch Over The Garden Wall at some point, I think you’d be delighted by it

MAB1845

i was so stoked when i heard you'd be reacting to this!!! it's such a gem - this was one of the movies I grew up with as my mom is a massive bowie fan. If you want to watch something with an even crazier level of puppets, art direction, and sets - then PLEASE watch the Dark Crystal netflix series! It's an absolute masterpiece made by the same folks based off a movie they made in the 80's. The TV show is actually a prequel to the movie so I would reccomend watching that first

Scarlett Fraser

literally my comfort movie and my comfort youtuber. this is a great day

Takara

They def freaked me out as a kid lol!

Takara

It's hard for me to say whether this movie was actually niche or not bc it was such a big part of my life. But I meet lots of people who were kids in the late 80s-90s who adore this movie, so I do think it has quite a following and is beloved. I love the theme of choosing your power, but still allowing childhood whimsy/imagination to be a big part of your life. As someone who has always had an active imagination and lived in many fantasy worlds (including this one) it really speaks to me. If you didn't notice a lot of the characters in the movie were toys in her room!! and many of her things (even for example a doll in a dress similar to the one she wears in the masquerade) are incorporated into Jareth's kingdom. There have been talks about a sequel to this movie for years, the latest director attached is Robert Eggers (Nosteratu 2024) who is still supposed to be working with Jim Henson studios. Not a lot else is known.

Jeanne

This movie was my and my brother's childhood favourite for so long, it's such a special story, so glad you enjoyed it!

Hannah Duncan

BRO. This is an all time fave of my family! My mom was/is a HUGE Bowie fan and thus, obsession was born! 💜

labyrinthpeaches

YOU CAN GROW UP AND STILL GET TO KEEP YOUR WHIMSICAL IMAGINATION EXACTLY 💖I'm so glad you loved this, it's so ridiculous and brilliant, I love it so much, your appreciation for all the little details in this reaction was so great to watch 🥰 I got to see this movie with a live band performing the soundtrack last year and genuinely that was a life changing experience 😄

nina

honestly very surprised you've never seen this movie before but it is such a timeless classic i'm glad u enjoyed it. i always reference the worm saying 'who me? no im just a worm'

Ellie

I named my dog Ludo after this film 🥰

Ken Lamoreaux

From now on I'm calling it a baby cage

morgen

fushigi!! the cleaners drill is an accurate depiction of going to the gynecologist lol

Princey✨

It’s such a beautiful story! It is such an underrated gem!! the Dark Crystal and Mirrormask are also made by Jim Henson which are both underrated classics as well! Troy you won’t be disappointed!!😂

Arwen Mussared

that is my absolute favourite comfort movie, it was my mums fav growing up with her family and now its my sisters and I's fav ! soooooo fun and so 80's

Celine

I second this!! Ive watched the behind the scenes so many times and just get a rush of excitement of the creative process! The way they created and directed the helping hands always blows my mind!

Jess

Troy, I highly suggest watching the behind the scenes making of the Labyrinth! I watched it as a kid just as often as I watched the actual movie.

diana carite

one of my favorite movies ever!!!!!! have such great memories watching this with my aunt growing up 🥹

Maggie Haning

troy, you can see the original hoggle puppet and a couple other props in real life at the unclaimed baggage in scottsboro, al!!! it's very cool

Cassie Hart

YES. My favorite movie. My cat is named Ludo because of this film. This was so fun to watch.

Golden_fiver

He needs to watch the Dark Crystal! Jim Henson and similar vibes!

tallguy

the characters 16 i believe!

Christine Browne

Okay, that's a little better. I had read that the actress was 13. Maybe when she auditioned? IMDb is saying she hadn't turned 15 yet when filming started.

Lindsay Hill

I don't remember the first time I watched this movie; it's just always been a part of my life and my number one favourite movie. I can't listen to 'As the World Falls Down' without crying. I feel so greatful too that I got the chance to see it for the first time on a cinema screen in 2023 with my mum, just before she passed, her favourite character was always Sir Diddymus and mines Ludo.

Angie Liu

I can't believe you missed the "come on, feet" line

Tylar E Dean

The fiery gang are my favorite lol they are so chaotic.

Katelyn Miller

This and the dark crystal raised me.

Chelsea Hall

This was my favourite movie as kid!

Jamie

Dude…. Your world will change forever… Labyrinth is a massive brick in the foundation of my youth.

Haleigh Pierce

Imagine if you HAD taken those mushrooms 😂 this movie is a trip without them

Mattt

its actually a maze in this movie, you cant get lost in a labyrinth

Rayne Erwin

The mushrooms contemplation already has me cackling

Audrey

Labyrinth is a perfect mix of learning to grow up, embracing imagination, surrealism, body horror, and David Bowie.

Regulation Gullet

So the full story that’s missing is that she’s obsessed with the play Labyrinth in the movie because her mother who’s passed was in it. That’s why she has the outfits and the play she’s reading and all the props in her room. The best.

teddyberr

computer show me david bowies pants from the labyrinth. hm. computer delete search history

Alex

incredible movie... but if I learned anything from watching Troy sit through this.... we need to get our baby boy to watch some horror movies, cuz his trippin was HILARIOUS

Lina Lessa

Oh, the nostalgia... loved to revisit this movie with you, troy ❤️

Rachel Recchio

I’m so glad you liked this one! One of my favorites 🙂‍↕️

theeshadowrealm

Wait this changes everything 😣 this was her way of dealing with grief

Paige Whitmore

My childhood movie! This and The Dark Crystal were my faves

Kailee M.

lol literally, those used to scare me the most

Millie

Troy you should watch Pans Labyrinth! Much scarier but it's so good.

Alexandra Thompson

You need to go back to the beginning and study her bedroom design. All the characters are in her room. Check out her mirror. Her mum ran off to do broadway and her co star was David Bowie. That’s the photo Sarah takes off her mirror in the end of the film. I have the concept art book for this film. The production design is SO layered in the story. So many Easter eggs it’s great!

Morgan Violet

My mom showed me this movie at 5 years old and it has stayed a favorite the whole time it kills me not more people know and appreciate it :(

Mugs

i kneeeww youd love labyrinth, im so glad you got round to it and loved it as much as it should be loved and also got the meaning of the ending. ive loved this film since i was like 7 but my brother used to be scared of it haha. on another note, have you seen drop dead fred? idk smn about ur reaction to this made me realise that if you havent seen it that itd be a great one to try and i think youd love that too, no music in it sadly but a lot of practical effects, whimsy and comedy and a deeper meaning overall that im sure youd get so if you wanna watch that thatd be great

Mugs

they were always my faves ever since i was little and never understood why ppl got freaked out by them but i now realise why and that maybe i was just used to watching unusual freaky stuff when i was little 😭

Mugs

it was crazy impressive watching those behind the scenes for sure, and seeing them workshopping the different helping hands faces was cool also

katie kissock

Hey, I would love for you to check out Rocketman (2019). It's a musical about Elton John using Elton John songs. Idk if that's your jam, but I think you'd enjoy it. Just a rec, thanks!

Chandler

It was one I always anticipated with an anxious sort of glee, I loved it but it also unsettled me!

Alisia Hollister

Thank you so much for the gift of watching someone discover Labyrinth for the first time 🥲✨ Forever and always my favorite movie. I remember showing my college friends this movie and they laughed through it and gave me weird looks the whole time and I laughed acting like I was unbothered by their making fun of it but it was such a sad moment for me. Watching you just GET IT healed something in me. Fun Fact Jim Henson and George Lucas wanted Michael Jackson for Jareth at first. No one could have ever come near Bowie though. Bowie is Jareth. And this movie was definitely my gateway movie into the world of fantasy. If you haven't watched Willow.... Please please do that. Not a musical but an amazing 80s fantasy with Val Kilmer 💖

ariona leilani
