Synopsis
Inspired by H. P. Lovecraft and Lord of the Mysteries.
Waking from a strange dream with a woman and an umbrella, he finds a knife buried in his own skull and a stranger's blood on his hands. A soul with no memory finds himself in the body of Franz Rousseau, in a gaslight Victorian world of legacy engines, locked telegraphs, and cobblestone empires built on a vanished king's borrowed genius.
But beneath the machinery, an older world still answers to elixirs, rituals, and eldritch invocation. Power is not learned. It is bought, in flesh and memory, from the twenty-two concepts that rule beyond the Wall of Sleep. Nine are sanctified. Thirteen are heresy. And the elixir only opens the door; it is deeds that engrave the soul.
Marked over the heart by a bloom belonging to none of the Sacred Nine, watched by Midnight Mirror's investigators and the Temple's veiled Spectors, and implicated in a massacre he cannot remember, Aaron is left holding two threads: a notebook written in his own blood, counting down the deaths of a family he has only just met, and the drifting memories of the man he now wears, sinking toward oblivion unless he catches them first.
Somewhere in the crimson rain, a Lady is waiting to see what he becomes.
This is the legend of the guest who was never asked if he wanted to stay... or was he?
