Totally Extra Favorite Actors

If you are fans of Geena Davis, you must check out the Long Kiss Good Night and Cutthroat Island. Both are fun, and Cutthroat Island bankrupted a studio. 😂 The actor from Terminator and Aliens you’re talking about is Michael Biehn. This is a tough one because I usually don’t look at actors as much as I do directors and cinematographers. 🤔

Shawn Goforth

Other than the actors you already mentioned (Pacino, De Niro, Streep, Schwarzenegger,) some of my favorites from these time periods would be the following and largely based on these films: Jack Nicholson: Easy Rider ('69), Carnal Knowledge ('71), Chinatown ('74), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ('75), The Shining ('80), Terms of Endearment ('83), Batman ('89), A Few Good Men, which we saw, Mars Attacks ('96), As Good As it Gets ('97), and Something's Gotta Give ('03). Dustin Hoffman: The Graduate ('67), Midnight Cowboy ('69), Lenny ('74), All the President's Men ('76), Kramer vs. Kramer ('79), Tootsie ('82), Rain Man ('88), Dick Tracy ('90), Hook ('91), Outbreak ('95). Faye Dunaway: Bonnie &Clyde ('67), Chinatown ('74), Network ('76), Mommie Dearest ('81). I could also add pretty much any movie Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, and Harrison Ford made prior to 2000. Interview with the Vampire from ('94- also with Brad Pitt) and Jerry Maguire ('96) are personal favorites.

I like Paul Rudd. Clueless (1995) is one of his first films. For Arnold Schwarzenegger, I would recommend Twins (1988), Kindergarten Cop (1990) to see a comedic side to him. The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974) are iconic classics, and some of the greatest films ever made. Al Pacino is fantastic in those. He is also great in Serpico (1973), which is based off a true story, and the police thriller Sea of Love (1989) is pretty good, too. The 1970s had some very great films but they don't hold back. A movie like Death Wish (1974) is an iconic thriller, but heavy stuff. The crime and grime and graphicness of those days doesn't hold back. Some classic 1970s films also include disaster films like The Towering Inferno (1974) and Earthquake (1974). Maybe the Dirty Harry (1971) franchise, if you girls are into Clint Eastwood films. The iconic comedy Animal House (1978) which basically started the comedy film genre we would see into the 1980s like Caddyshack (1980). The 1980s had a lot of raunchy comedies. I am a fan of those, and many are very hilarious and well made movies but I am not sure how into raunchy comedy the two of you are. Porky's (1981), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), American Pie (1999) are all great movies, but raunchy.

One 70's actor that I can't wait for you to see is John Cazale. He appeared in only 5 films and each of them were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. The Godfather Part 1 &2, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon, The Deer Hunter.

Mark M

I thought I was the only one that has seen Sea of Love. I suggested it at totallywhatever.com

Gorillawit

Loved the Leftovers and Carrie Coons is a great/underrated actress! If you like stuff like Leftovers and, judging by Carolyn's poster, X-Files, you should definitely check out Severance. It's weird and mysterious like those and really outstanding.

Totally Whatever

We haven't seen those Geena Davis films yet! Great idea, we should have another discussion and focus on directors and cinematographers.

Totally Whatever

What a fabulous list! We should watch a Dustin Hoffman film - most of the ones you listed, we haven't seen. We did watch Hook back in the 90s and loved it. Faye Dunaway too, haven't seen those.

Totally Whatever

We've never seen The Godfather, so it's very high on our list. Those '70s classics you mentioned sound really interesting and we should also try some of the 80s comedies you mentioned as well. Great list!

Totally Whatever

We haven't seen any of those yet! We've moved The Godfather up on our list ;)

FranciscoGios

I don’t know a lot of 70s movies but I grew up watching John Trevolta he was my favorite mostly from his 90s flicks. The only musical movie he did is called Grease and it’s from the 70s, you guys should check that one out. The second one is Jean-Claude Van Damme his a Belgian martial art actor so if you girls need action watch Timecop.

Rob Norton

Jackie Chan before Rush Hour

Totally Whatever

We have seen Grease multiple times- Nanette is a bit of a theatre nerd! Timecop looks like it is right up our alley.

Rob Norton

Anyone of these, if available then in the original English Dub from back in the day (new dub not as fun, otherwise watch it in Chinese): Project A - Part 1 (1983) Dragons Forever (1988) Police Story 1 (1985) There are many others from the period, but these are probably the best. Have you seen any 80s Jackie Chan?

Rob Norton

80s Jackie Chan is peak Jackie Chan.

WOW! Thank you for all of the recommendations. When looking at new movies we will reference posts like these. Thank you!

Totally Whatever

We have seen Buffy, but so far, everything else you mentioned would be new to us!

thansen

I loved The Sting and especially Three Days of the Condor (except that odd love scene). I love much of A Bridge Too Far, except some poor casting choices. The book by Cornelius Ryan is one of the best I have read. I was really enjoying Sneakes until the last half hours, where to me it went of the rails.

thansen

I like Travolta, too. My favorite is probably Grease but the movies Blow Out and Get Shorty are close seconds.

thansen

I would love to see a reaction to Network. It's a masterclass in acting and writing.

thansen

Haven't seen Long Kiss Goodnight yet but I did watch Cutthroat Island last year, expecting it to be a complete disaster. It wasn't. It was a lot of fun, thanks in large part to Davis.

TeatroGrottesco

It was a lot fun and great cast. Between the two Davis did well as the action hero. LKGN is a lot of fun.

JAKH

"Supercop" (1992) with Michelle Yeoh

JAKH

For the theater nerd, movies based on stage productions: "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" (1982) "12 Angry Men" (1957) "The Lion in Winter" (1968) "The Taming of The Shrew" (1967) "Throne of Blood" (1957) "Stalag 17" (1953)

JAKH

More good Faye Dunaway: "The Three Musketeers" (1973) adventure/comedy "The Four Musketeers" (1974) - Part 2, not a sequel "The Towering Inferno" (1974) "Three Days of the Condor" (1975) suspense/thriller "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968 version) "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1999 version) she was in both versions as different characters

JAKH

A lot of these are duplicates from other lists in these comments. It was common with older movies to have several really good actors and actresses in the same movie, not just one. A lot of the movies on the other lists that I posted are also duplicates with several good actors in the same move, and some have big ensemble casts.

Grampa Brad

You girls really should watch John Carpenter's "They Live" (1988) , He also provided some of the music. That movie might make you paranoid. I call you girls because your ages are between the ages of my children and grandchildren, so not disrespecting you.

Totally Whatever

A lot of people have suggested that movie. We will move it closer to the top, thanks for the recommendation!
