Mal: That would be why I just asked them.

This was one of my favorite episodes, definitely in my top 2 or 3. Jubil Early was the scariest villain out of all the episodes. To answer one of your questions, Firefly was canceled before Trash, The Message, and Heart of Gold could air.

Totally Whatever

Jubal Early was definitely terrifying. And thanks for the info on the unaired episodes!

Gary Giaimo

I cannot WAIT to watch Serenity with you two! What a fun ride this has been!

TeatroGrottesco

They did not air the actual pilot till it was over. They treated it as a “special”. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Said the before, but how they approached River moving through liminal spaces was a fantastic choice. River’s speech (and delivery) was just crushingly beautiful. I know I bugged the hell out of you all (😂) to watch this, I’m glad you did and that you enjoyed it the way you did. As a fan of the show it’s always a joy to watch people go through this process of falling in love with the show. 🖤🤍

Our full-length reaction will be ready this Sunday! We also plan to edit this one for YT. We've loved every minute of this Firefly journey.

Totally Whatever

We are so glad that you bugged us!! How are we going to top this show?

The ending scene of the message in ep 11 was when they got the cancellation news. When they delivered Tracey to his family on St Alban's. They found out as they were filming the scene delivering the dead boy home. So their sadness wasn't just acting.

TG, River was played by such a wonderful actress, Summer Glau. Then she played a Terminator cyborg in "The Sarah Connor Chronicles." Have to say I didn't care for "Serenity." Whedon can be mean and sadistic.

TeatroGrottesco

I know! It sets high bar. Farscape and The Expanse are excellent contenders, but longer commitments. From what you all said I think you will love the puppet work etc in Farscape. Excellent character arcs and one of the best villains in sci-fi. Fringe is another one more hardish sci-fi. Later 2000’s but excellent. Cowboy Bebop (anime) would be another, it was one of the shows that inspired Firefly. It had a similar arc. 1 season and a movie. The original Ghost In The Shell (Film 1995) think you would really enjoy. It is an icon of both anime and sci-fi. As 90’s go there is Babylon 5. Basically Lord of the Rings in space. Right around the time CGI became more readily available for TV, the CGI does not age great but the story and performances are excellent. The Sarah Conor Chronicles. Lena Heady is fantastic as Sarah. There is also an Alien series getting ready to air on FX soon.

Thanks for all of these suggestions. We are considering watching Band of Brothers in tandem with something else.

TeatroGrottesco

BOB is a solid choice and think you all will enjoy it. Not my cup of tea though. So 🤞🏻 on the tandem series. 😂😂

Babylon 5 is still great. I rewatched it recently and it holds up. Admittedly, the FX look unfinished, as if they didn't have time to finish them compared to today. They looked great back then. SCC was mostly good but IIRC, that last season they went strange. I watched and enjoyed the Alien Earth show. It created a lot more questions that I do want to know answers to. Fringe is great! I enjoyed that! Stargate SG-1 was good in its time. I tried to rewatch it recently and first season is tough. I might have to try again. I watch things fast, 1.75x, so that might help if they are faster. I keep hearing how good Farscape and Expanse are but haven't been able to get into them. Take care!

I like this episode a lot. Jubal Early is a top TV villain for me. Well written and well played. When he looked at Book and said, "That ain't a shepherd," my wife and I wanted so many things answered. The lines that River hears, we, the viewer, at least hear Simon's later but the context is different. I really want to know the context of the rest of the quotes. That's what I miss about not getting more, all of the potential and setups that don't get any payoff. Blue Sun is another one not to mention the agents they use. I think this was also going to be a turning point for River's character. I think they were going to trust her more, and I think that would help her. At least, that's my head canon for it. Notice that River asked for permission to come aboard from Mal? She was the only one that hadn't, since she was smuggled in. This was Mal inviting her on board, even though she was already part of his crew. I don't know if you looked up anything or read anything but a few spoilers. Firefly continued in comics, same as Joss' other shows. (Buffy got an ending, Angel got the rest of a season, so they knew it was canceled, but they weren't done with it, IIRC.) In the comics, Zoe is pregnant but I don't think we got to meet the child. They give a background for Book but I don't like it. (More on that in the movie.) There is some discussion of Inarra as well, including why she left and what the syringe was from Bushwhacked. Great reaction! Thanks for sharing! Take care!
