For a fictional but mostly scientifically accurate/plausible and more modern NASA movie (to see how far 40+ years gets us), you should watch The Martian. Another stacked cast and great film. A really good companion to this I think. The zero-G scenes were filmed on the “vomit comet”; a plane that NASA uses to train astronauts which does these parabolic arc maneuvers to simulate zero-G but it only lasts for like 25 seconds at a time, so while full body shots were done this way, more close up scenes were done on the ground. Also, I googled to confirm but Velcro wasn’t invented for space travel however NASA adopted it and the use by them helped make it an adopted fastener.

The excessive use of Velco was also one of the contributing factors to the deadly Apollo 1 fire.

For a really good NASA true story try either or both of these: "The Right Stuff" (1983) "From the Earth to the Moon" (1998) series, 12 eps total

- Mama Lovell was played by director Ron Howard's mother Jean Howard - The priest sitting with the family in the re-entry scenes was Ron Howard's father, Rance Howard - When Marylin Lovell is saying good-bye to Jim the night before launch, the teen in the yellow dress behind her is Ron Howard's daughter Bryce Dallas Howard, now an actress and director in her own career. - On the aircraft carrier, the older naval Captain (4 gold stripes on his shoulder epaulets) who salutes Tom Hanks and shakes his hand is the real Jim Lovell - Ed Harris was also in the NASA true story movie "The Right Stuff" (1983) as astronaut John Glenn. - After this, Tom Hanks produced the 12-ep true story series "From the Earth to the Moon" (1998) about the entire Mercury-Gemini-Apollo project - For some strange reason, Kevin Bacon turned down doing "Tremors 2" in order to be in "Apollo 13"

We will add The Martian to our list. Thanks for the recommendation. "Vomit Comet"! That sounds both amazing and terrifying at the same time. Thanks for clearing up that Velcro fact - we looked it up afterward and realized the mistake.

Totally Whatever

Thanks for the trivia! I can't believe that Kevin Bacon turned down Tremors 2 for this!!

One recommendation I would suggest for another space movie is “Apollo 11” from 2019 which is a documentary featuring lots of never before released film from the first moon landing launch. The restored film taken before during and after the 1969 launch looks absolutely incredible. I can’t say it would be a good reaction movie to watch on the channel here as there is no real dialogue or story as such, but well worth a watch on your own. Edit here is the trailer: https://youtu.be/3Co8Z8BQgWc?si=W8rtDBqZHDuqJOZi I was lucky enough to see it in its IMAX theatrical release with my dad and it was amazing!

I don't know if you've seen The Stand from 1994 (6-hour, TV movie), but it's got Gary Sinise in it, amongst a surprisingly-strong cast. Some parts haven't aged brilliantly, but on the whole it's a great adaptation of the novel.

Totally Whatever

That sounds amazing! You are so lucky to have seen it in an IMAX theater.
