Yes! I thought I would have to wait until Sunday for this one. Asia and Bj watching Ong-Bak and you two with this? What a day of entertainment.

Mark M

I ordered a copy that is arriving today because I thought the release was tomorrow. I’m not complaining but hurry up and get here!! 😁 You may ask yourself why recommend a movie that you don’t have access to? I saw that it was streaming on the Crave app(which is where we get HBO in Canada as well as Showtime etc)then I went to check it out yesterday and it was French language exclusively.🤬 I hate when they do that.

Mike the Ginger

Same! I actually was looking forward to this one all week!

Michael Lynch

Great emotional reaction to this powerful movie. Some awesome practical effects and some great acting. Another movie that will blow you away and is even more powerful than this movie is Men of Honor. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert De Niro.

Mark M

Im so glad you enjoyed this one(minus the ending😉)! It's easy to get caught up in the drama between siblings as well as the intense firefighting scenes. Great reaction in my opinion. Thanks for bringing up 9/11 as we are only a few days removed from the anniversary. It seemed fitting to watch this movie now.👍

JAKH

No CGI, all practical fire, effects, and stunts.

JAKH

Writer Gregory Widen also wrote "Highlander", which you watched recently

JAKH

A good companion movie to watch after this would be "The Towering Inferno" (1974) with a huge ensemble cast led by Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, William Holden, and Faye Dunaway

Totally Whatever

That ending was rough. What a powerful movie, thank you for choosing this one.

REDR58

Seconded! It is one of the great disaster movies of the 1970s, along with "The Poseidon Adventure" from from 1972.

REDR58

I'm going to try to watch this later tonight but some other good/excellent movies with Jennifer Jason Leigh are "Rush" (also from 1991), "Single White Female" (1992) (which I may or may not have recommended here before, sorry, can't remember!) and "Dolores Claiborne" (1995).

JAKH

Another great ensemble cast

Great film reaction! I looked forward to it all week and enjoyed watching full length last night. I actually remember that I first saw this movie on an NBC network premiere when I was a kid in 1993. I was so young and I have seen this film many times and it never gets old. - Kurt Russell is great and I cannot wait for you two to see other films he did. You two were in spectacular denial about his character's fate at the end. I felt bad for you, especially poor Nanette wiping tears. - Robert Deniro yelling is classic Robert Deniro. One of the great actors of all time. I know there are a ton of more Robert Deniro films to watch in the future. - When you see the dead body in the auditorium and Nanette yells "WHY!" I laughed lol poor Nanette. - You guys called the bells ringing during the sex scene and them just hanging on top of the truck. I was very impressed. - Being from Cleveland, I noticed Kurt Russell do a very impressive Chicago accent. Good observation, I am sure many people don't catch that. - JT Walsh is the actor who played the Alderman. He was a fantastic character actor and I am sure you will see him in many more films in the future. He sadly passed from a heart attack in 1998 at the age of 54. - I am adding the term Creepy Creeperson to Carolyn's slang alongside her Godfather Part II "Sneaky Sneakerson". I consider "Backdraft" the best firefighting film. However, I would highly recommend the 1974 film "The Towering Inferno". It was the biggest movie of that year, and I remember renting it as a kid in the early 1990s and honestly, it holds up VERY WELL. Can we all agree that practical special effects like in "Backdraft" are 100x better than CGI?

Mark M

I've been meaning to suggest another Kurt Russell and JT Walsh movie for producers choice, Breakdown(1997).

Totally Whatever

Nice! Our Producer's choice post for September will be posted tomorrow morning.

Totally Whatever

Mike, thanks for watching with us! Yes, those practical effects are so much better. We definitely need to see more Kurt Russell films - we loved him in The Thing, too. We have The Towering Inferno on our list as a follow up to this one.

Totally Whatever

Yes, we have some of those on our list! I don't think Rush is on there, so we can add that.

Mike the Ginger

I have always had a crush on Jennifer Jason Leigh seeing her in movies like Backdraft and Fast Times. I actually preferred her character to Phoebe Cates in Fast Times, usually most guys say the opposite.

Mike the Ginger

Nice! Yeah, "Breakdown" is a really great 1997 thriller and it has actually gained more acclaim as sort of a cult classic as the decades have passed. Escape from New York, Unlawful Entry, and Executive Decision are some other great Kurt Russell films, among others.

Mike the Ginger

It is strange for those of us (I'm assuming most of us here) who remember the pre-9/11 world. Watching films like Backdraft and The Towering Inferno before and after 9/11 changes perspective. I cannot watch either film, especially The Towering Inferno, without thinking about 9/11.

Thanks for the great reaction, ladies! Ron Howard did a fantastic job with this movie! He insisted on using real fire, and that could never be done today. It's too dangerous! Kurt almost died making this film! Ron hired actors, who were also real IAFF career Firefighters, for roles in the movie, along with Firefighters and Officers, to consult with and keep everything as real as possible! Other Firefighter movies pale in comparison to this one. This is Kurt's best movie ever, in my opinion! Well, it's tied with Overboard (1987)! They did it right with this movie. Ron Howard truly captured the heart and soul of these Firefighters. It's not what they are, it's who they are! This is one of my favorite movies! My husband is an IAFF career Firefighter/EMT, and I'm also an EMT. We saw this movie on our first date while we were still in high school! After graduation he went into the fire academy, and when he finished, we got married! I was 19, and he was 21. Last month was our 32nd wedding anniversary! I have watched my husband do the most incredible job, that he loves so much. I agree, I think you have to love fire just a little in order to do this job well! Oh, and I can neither confirm or deny that anyone has sex in, or on the firetrucks! Well, no one would do it on top of the hoses like they did. The hoses have been dragged on the ground through mud and water and get really gross! lol!

Totally Whatever

Thanks so much! Happy 32nd Anniversary!! And thanks for the insider information about firetrucks ;)

In the beginning of the movie Armageddon (1998), there are a couple of scenes that almost look like it could have been used as an instructional manual for the 9/11 attacks, and it was released just 3 years before the attacks happened. So eerie!!!
