There are many jokes based on the culture of the day that can get missed.........the woman saying her husband never has a 2nd coffee at home was a massive coffee ad campaign on tv in 1970s, they were mocking it

28:30 "check the radar range" The Radarange by Amana was the first compact microwave oven for home use, first made in 1967. Lorna Patterson (Randy 😍) did her own singing. The song is called "River of Jordan" written by Peter Yarrow of the folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary. The low-key joke of the plane knocking out the antenna of the Chicago radio station "where disco lives forever" is an allusion to efforts by locals at the time to end the disco craze, spurred on by radio DJ Steve Dahl culminating to a head at the infamous Disco Demolition stunt at Comiskey Park in July of 1979.

A few other faces in the film: The Hari Krishna is played by David Leisure. He appeared in a series of comedic ads for Isuzu in the '80s as spokesperson "Joe Isuzu". He also played the neighbor Charlie on the sitcom Empty Nest (which was a spinoff of Golden Girls). The sick girl was Jill Whelan. At the time she had just begun appearing as Vicki, Captain Stubing's daughter on The Love Boat. Peter Graves (Capt. Oveur) held the lead role in the '60s spy series Mission: Impossible. Robert Stack was best known at the time for portraying Elliott Ness in the '50s crime series The Untouchables. Lloyd Bridges (father of Beau and Jeff Bridges) who played Tower Chief Steve McCroskey also starred in an action/drama series called Sea Hunt. Leslie Nielsen was an established dramatic actor as well. These 4 are the main reason the parody worked so well. They played it so dry and straight. The nun was played by singer Maureen McGovern who had recorded 2 Oscar Winning songs- both for disaster movies The Poseiden Adventure, and The Towering Inferno. The Japanese general was James Hong who has appeared in hundreds of tv shows and films, including Blade Runner and Big Trouble in Little China. The plane mechanic who falls is comedian/actor Jimmie Walker, known for playing JJ Evans on Good Times "DY-NO-MITE!!"

the beauty of it............ It's a great rewatch, and like any great rewatch, you will always catch more

Kudos for one of you catching the 'whacking material' placard under the dirty magazines -- a joke I missed for years. 😏 Since you mentioned it, I'd definitely recommend "Saturday Night Fever." Hardly anyone reacts to it, for some reason. 🤷‍♂️ Just be aware it's not a fun, lightweight dance-oriented romp à la "Flashdance," "Footloose," or "Dirty Dancing," as quite a few people seem to assume. It actually has a fairly gritty storyline.

Totally Whatever

Good to know, I did think it was going to be similar to Dirty Dancing or Footloose.

Bill W

2nd 👍for Sat Night Fever AND Urban Cowboy!

Byrd N. Hand

I've never seen "Urban Cowboy." I've always assumed it was sort of a lesser "Saturday Night Fever," albeit with country music instead of disco. 🤔

AIRPLANE (1980) IS "ZAZs" (Zucker/Abrams/Zucker) first feature length film. It's origins date back to the trios theater group - Kentucky Fried Theater, formed in 1971. It was a sketch-comedy troupe that got a lot of it's material from watching the programing and commercials that would run on UHF stations between the hours of 11:00 PM and 4:00 AM. The end result of these sketches would influence their first film - KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE (1977), a series of short comedy sketches combined to make a feature length film. With the advent of video recorders, the trio were able to tape the programs all night, instead of staying up until the wee hours of the morn'. This also allowed them to work more efficiently since they could scan through the previous nights shows, concentrating on the commercials, and then just record over it. However; on one such night the trio recorded a late-night film entitled ZERO HOUR (1957) https://youtu.be/AWI3JZvvbI4?si=asCgZgQmVL7iJMn7 This melodrama written by Hall Bartlett, John C. Champion, Arthur Hailey, and directed by Hall Bartlett, made an indelible impression on the trio, so much so that when they were offered the chance to make their own feature, the used ZERO HOUR as the basis. Truth be told; they copied it exactly, beat-for-beat, line by line, shot-for-shot, because they did not know how to write a feature script. They were so faithful to the source material, that one element in AIRPLANE generally goes right over the audiences' heads. What is it? It's the sound of the plane. By 1980 all planes were jets, but if you listen carefully, every time you see the plane it's making the sound of a prop plane. Same as ZERO HOUR. They did secure the rights however; just to be safe, and the end result was AIRPLANE! https://youtu.be/8-v2BHNBVCs?si=o8cEm0MFA8-Q5AlS With this film, ZAZ created a new film genre - "shot-gun humor" or "rapid-fire comedy." Over time, a lot of the references that were side-splittingly funny to audiences of the 80s, go over the heads of todays audience. Throwaway gags like: "Jim never has a second cup at home." Is meaningless, but it parodied a well known Yuban coffee campaign of the late 70s https://youtu.be/MJ4kCF22O2w?si=adJfIt1mHwzPnm_V The sweet old woman who speaks jive is unknow to todays audience, but this actress was Barbara Billingsley - "America's Mom" in the late 50's, playing the role of June Cleaver on the LEAVE IT TO BEAVER television series. Seeing a person who was known a a pure white bread, idyllic American mom speak jive with a couple of soul brothers was the height of hilarity. https://youtu.be/3aXGT7sSn1Y?si=eEOewrL7rY41AZCb The George Zipp line - "...Go out there and win one for the Zipper," is a play on a line from the film KNUTE ROCKNE: ALL AMERICAN (1940), were the dying lead actor played by Ronald Regan, asks that when the chips are down that his team goes out there and win one for "The Gipper!" His nick name. https://youtu.be/_e7rmpjBSR8?si=Ha4EWf1GbHuRlplu There are others, but this is already longer than I had intended. If anyone has any more questions, I'm happy to answer them if I can.

Bill W

Sean Astin reads that "Gipper" speech off the plaque in Rudy.

Bill W

Byrd, there's one dance scene early on where they capitalize on John's dancing ability, but that's it. Not a "dance" movie but plenty of music.

Totally Whatever

Thanks for the full breakdown, Kevin. We've gotten a lot of requests to follow this with Kentucky Fried Movie.

Peter Graves served in the US Army Air Forces (1944-1945) but was neither a pilot nor a Captain. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, however, WAS a Captain....of the Lakers 🏀. In fact his nickname, league-wide, was "The Captain", until he retired in 1989.
