Such a wonderful watch ladies. It was great to see how it all started with you. I was 10 years old when Glenn went up and I can't describe how exciting it was. Within the next couple years the Beatles showed up and life was never the same.

love the book, and movie........movie has wierd tone shifts, I think it was originally conceived that it would end up as a mini series, not a theater run, but great despite inaccuracies......... Gus Grissom didnt get treated fairly, but that's Hollywood................like I posted before and you added to the list, the follow-up to this is the Tom Hanks series of the Apollo program............

James Lewis

The bar scene towards the beginning of the movie, with the old guy real close and staring at the two guys looking for astronaut candidates, was actually Chuck Yeager, the man who broke the sound barrier.

Investigators and modern analysis have largely exonerated Gus Grissom, concluding he did not intentionally or accidentally blow the hatch of the Liberty Bell 7 capsule; instead, the premature detonation was most likely caused by a static electrical discharge from the recovery helicopter's rotor wash interacting with the capsule's antenna, according to Astronomy Magazine. Grissom maintained he did not trigger the hatch, and no signs of a bruise from striking the plunger—which would have been necessary to manually open it—were found on his hand, says the National Air and Space Museum.

JAKH

There were 3 stages in the NASA Space Program: Mercury had 1 man per flight, Gemini had 2 per flight, and Apollo had 3 per flight. Despite what is depicted in the movie, NASA was fully confident in Gus Grissom. He flew Gemini missions and was scheduled to command Apollo 1 before the fatal fire. If he hadn't been killed, he probably would have commanded the first moon landing instead of Neil Armstrong. - During his mission, after the capsule was secured after splashdown, Wally Shirra deliberately triggered the explosive bolts on his hatch. He ended up with a huge bruise on his hand, which Grissom did not have anywhere on his body, proving that he had not triggered the bolts, and also proving that a small object could not have done it. - The copilot of the recovery helicopter reported a large electrical discharge from the recovery probe to the capsule while trying to hook up, just immediately before the hatch blew. While a helicopter is flying, it builds up a large static electrical charge from the friction between the air and the main rotor. - An undersea explorer/salvage team found Grissom's Liberty Bell 7 in 1999. Examination showed that the hatch frame had been deformed by the heat during reentry, which might have contributed to the activation of the bolts. - The writer of the book that the movie is based on was a reporter, not a historian. He was part of a then-new philosophy of "popular journalism" which believes in reporting the popularly held views, and not bothering with fact-checking or correcting false beliefs/narratives (unfortunately we see this a lot now). This is one of the biggest criticisms of the book and movie.

The real Pancho was herself a pilot who set many aviation records and "firsts" in the early history of flight. Chuck Yeager was born in 1923, and was 97 when he died in 2020. The real Yeager had a cameo in the movie as the old bartender wearing a hat in the scene serving Crossfield a steak in Pancho's bar after breaking Mach 2 and spoke with Gennis Yeager before she danced with Chuck, then later in the bar clips while Yeager is flying the X-1A to Mach 2.5. He was also the one who asked Harry Shearer if he wanted anything to drink. The name on the nose of the X-1 was "Glamorous Glennis", named after his wife. They were married for 45 years until she died from cancer in 1990. The real X-1 "Glamorous Glennis" is now on display in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington DC. 6 of the 7 mercury astronauts flew. Deke Slayton was disqualified after developing atrial fibrillation. He was re-certified for flight operations in 1970 and flew the joint Apollo-Soyuz international mission to link up with a Soviet Soyuz capsule. He was also depicted in "Apollo 13" as the supervisor of Ed Harris's character (Gene Kranz) John Glenn (Ed Harris) retired from NASA and the USMC and was elected to Congress as Senator from Ohio for over 30 years. After retiring from politics, he returned to NASA to go on a space shuttle mission in 1998 at age 77. He was married to Annie for 73 years until his death at age 95. Annie Glenn lived to be over 100. The actress playing Annie Glenn is Mary Jo Deschanel, mother of actresses Zoe & Emily Deschanel.

Thanks for watching with us. It must have been incredible to watch him go up during that time - especially as a 10-year-old.

Totally Whatever

Yeah, I had a feeling they didn't treat Gus fairly. I could see how this would work as a mini-series.

Totally Whatever

Thank you for explaining that further. I'm so glad that he was exonerated.

Totally Whatever

Thanks for all of the details. I'm devastated that he wasn't portrayed accurately in the film.

JoeyVettes

I thought you'd like that...

Totally Whatever

Thanks for all of this extra trivia, JAKH. John and Annie were married for 73 years - what a love story!

Great reaction! One of my favorite films. Not accurate in many ways but a brilliant film. By the way, we started watching an episode I Dream of Jeannie a few minutes ago and during the opening minutes none other than Chuck Yeager shows up in a cameo.

Totally Whatever

Thanks! We really loved this one. I can't believe you just saw him in I Dream of Jeannie!

Being a Veteran and loving your military movie reactions. You really get it. The depth, emotions and everything else within us. "To find a goodness and meaning to this life" this is my deployment video I made about a year after back from Iraq. 2005-2006. https://youtu.be/NK9ifmA8aEE?si=sa8ZlJbYm8YfKdPR

Sam Shepard - they guy who played Chuck Yeager - was an accomplished playwrite and wrote Paris, Texas -one of my top 5 favorite movies.

Totally Whatever

Yes, I've read some of his plays. We will have to look into Paris, Texas.

You know, I wrote the entire post and then accidently deleted the page. :'( I was so frustrated I didn't want to attempt to write it all again until today, so once more... Many viewers many not realize that THE RIGHT SUFF (1983) has a movie couple among its cast and crew, who went on to start the beginnings of a showbiz dynasty. Side Note: I'm of the firm opinion that you need at least three generations in the biz before you can call it a dynasty. The Barrymores, The Howards, The Hustons, The Carridines, etc Marry Jo Daschanel played Annie Glenn, but her Husband Caleb was the films Director of Photography. Some of Caleb's films that fall into the parameter of your show include: THE BLACK STALLION (1979) BEING THERE (1979) THE NATURAL (1984) and ANNA AND THE KING (1999), to name a few. He has also DP'd for his daughter Emily Daschanel on her TV series BONES, bur not for Zooey's TV series NEW GIRL. The Director Philip Kaufman co-wote the story for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981) and wrote and directed my favorite horror/sci-fi film of the 1970s - INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1979). A superior remake of the original 1954 film - one you should consider for Halloween.

Totally Whatever

Oh no, sorry you had to redo it. - thank you for coming back and sharing . I'm a big fan of BONES and Emily Deschanel. I didn't know this backstory.

I'd like tp recommend "First Man" (2018) about Neil Armstrong, starring Ryan Gosling; also, "The Dish" (2000) which tells of a small group of people who operated a giant radio telescope (in the middle of a sheep paddock) in Parkes, NSW, Australia. The dish captured the weak signals from the Apollo 11 1969 lunar landing and moon walk with its behemoth parabolic reflector. It's quite humorous as the operators interact with the small town people.

Greg In East TN

Ironic that the guy that played Shepard was named Glenn. Scott Glenn was also the captain of the Dallas on Hunt For Red October.

I really wish you'd consider doing the mini-series "From The Earth To The Moon" by Tom Hanks. It's in 12 parts, but it covers from before Mercury to the end of Apollo. It's very detailed and very interesting and they tried to stay as close to history as possible. I really think you two would like it. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120570/

Totally Whatever

We've been looking at it and have added it to our short TV/mini-series list.
