N+C have you seen Hacksaw Ridge? A Mel Gibson directed movie and true story.

ButtercupsTrueLove

"H-E-E-E-R-E'S, Johnny!" By the way, this reference is lost to many a generation these days. Ed McMahon was the sidekick on the old The Tonight Show with host Johnny Carson and I think that's how he used to announce Johnny.

AdrianF

Looking forward to this one... thanks for the longer version - the other is hard to come across.

Michael Lynch

All work and no play make Homer something something. Gimmee da bat Gimmee da bat Gimmee da bat

Totally Whatever

Joey - we haven't seen Hacksaw Ridge yet but it is on our list.

Totally Whatever

I vaguely remember that from Johnny Carson! It all makes sense now.

Totally Whatever

We should do a bonus reaction to that episode of Treehouse of Horror.

After seeing Jack Nicholson's performance in The Shining it's easy to see why he was later cast in 1989 Batman as the Joker. He was a natural at playing crazy. There is a sequel called 'Doctor Sleep' (2019) with an adult Danny Torrance. Definitely worth checking out.👍😉

ButtercupsTrueLove

I don't know if you two have a Letterboxd account and Patreon's search feature falls short at times so I don't know what Jack Nicholson films you may have already watched but... There are other of his award-nominated films that I've not yet seen but these are pretty good. I've purposely omitted any spoilers so if you get curious you can look them up. "The Departed" (2006) "The Last Detail" (1973) "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) based on the novel by Ken Kesey. I read this back in high school and watched the movie years later as a rental. Wow. I saw Christian Slater on a late night talk show (can't recall which show) many years ago and he told a story about cold-calling Jack Nicholson at home one evening. He said the conversation was mostly one-sided and at one point Christian had been rambling for a good 20 minutes. When he realized that he hadn't heard a peep out of Jack for a while, he asked (me paraphrasing), "Jack, are you still there?", to which Jack replied with a slow, "...yes." I had fun watching "The Shining" with your reactions. Thank you! Stephen King wrote a sequel book, "Doctor Sleep", which was subsequently made into a film. King expressed satisfaction about Mike Flanagan's adaptation to the big screen.

Michael Lynch

I wondered if you girls would recognize that. Homer is a nut.

Totally Whatever

We have a Letterboxd that we are working on updating: https://letterboxd.com/totallywhatever We've seen Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men" on this channel, but that is it so far. We will add those others to our list. I've seen "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," but Carolyn hasn't yet.

Jeremy V.

OMG!!! How did this slip past men!!!!! oh I do so hope you watch the sequel! Doctor Sleep. Either way I’m watching this one right now. Thanks guys.

Shawn Goforth

We have a haunting through reincarnation here. In Jack's initial interview, Mr. Ullman says the caretaker who murdered his family in 1970 was Charles Grady. In the party scene in the Gold Room, in what is obviously the 1920s, the server states his name is Delbert Grady. They are not meant to be the same person, but Jack has been brought back to the hotel through the same spirit. The spirit has come back in his form, which is why he knows the hotel inside and out, knowing what would be around every corner. It's the reason he has "always been there." He is the 1980 manifestation.

Michael Lynch

Everybody keeps mentioning Doctor sleep. Everyone seems to like it. When I watched it I was bored to death. I just didn’t get it and it wasn’t anywhere near as good as the shining.

Shawn Goforth

I would agree. I didn't find the two films similar in any way, and Doctor Sleep is not something I would ever need to rewatch a second time. It felt more like a television show.

AdrianF

Did you watch the Director's Cut? It makes for a more-coherent movie. For what it's worth, I like both versions but the DC is superior (shame the only way to watch that in 4K is streaming).

AdrianF

I do have the short one on Blu Ray, but yeah streaming is rare.

Michael Lynch

I probably just watched the regular one. Maybe I’ll give that one a try.

Mike the Ginger

So, I saw this film about 25 years ago when I was like...12 years old. I remember not caring for it. I found it sort of boring and odd and strange and too long. (I am generally against movies being too long, with some exceptions like The Godfather or Shawshank Redemption). I never watched again until last night because I figured now would be a good time to re-examine it, 25 years later, watching along with the two of you. Some notes: - The Tommy finger shit freaks me out - Carolyn seems pissed about the lack of fresh food LOL I agree I love my salads (I also eat meat though) - The corduroy pants and leather jacket really show how even into the early 1980s, we had 1970s fashion. - I like occasional AMSR, when I was young I used to get the ASMR feeling watching Bob Ross paint. LOL - I laughed at Nanette saying to Jack Nicholson "I am not making you ANYTHING to eat!" LOL don't make her angry. Stanley Kubrick was a good director but very odd and pretentious. Overall, this film has a very unsettling feeling throughout, making it an effective psychological horror film. Good reaction and I am glad I gave this another look after two decades.

Harvey Lee

This is definitely heavily referenced throughout pop culture The Shining just gives Jack Nicholson a chance to play his most famously unhinged character .🪓😜 Heeeere's Johnny Come play with us Danny Come play with us forever and ever and ever !!! Some chilling lines that 'll makes sense now or do they !? Looking forward to this one ladies .🤘

Totally Whatever

So glad you revisited it 25 years later with us! Yes, Carolyn was very concerned about the lack of fresh veggies - maybe that's why he went crazy. ;)

AdrianF

It's still slow-paced, but you might get on better with it.

Jeremy V.

Oh, it was an absolute blast! Thank you so much. You guys are great together.

NEIL HOPPER

You 2 need to watch the prequel “The Nannetting”…basically, a man, married, living in Maine has a wife who watches movies all day and torments him with E.T. Dolls and bowls of candy until he conforms…kinda slow but terrifying ending with axe throwing…

David Zabel

There is a miniseries of this starring Rebecca De Mornay and Steven Weber that is truer to book and is a very good watch as well. Not suggesting you do it for patreon but on your own time if you'd like.

Totally Whatever

That is extremely tempting. I wonder if anyone would be interested in this for Patreon.

Wade Wallenstein

What better way to start over here then with this Horror classic! I was scared to watch this when I was younger but love it now. You should watch ‘The Stand” from 1994. It’s a TV Miniseries based off another Stephen King novel and I found it highly entertaining.

Gary Giaimo

I second the Doctor Sleep watch. One of the few really great horror sequels, especially with such a gap in release years. This movie is iconic and basically untouchable, but Doctor Sleep gets as close as it possibly could. If you do decide to watch Doctor Sleep, I would recommend doing the Extended Director's Cut. But either version is really solid.

Totally Whatever

We will look into "The Stand” - sounds like something me might like.

AdrianF

I've been tempted to pick it for the draw each month, but didn't because it's 6 hours long, i.e. almost three picks worth. It's really worth a watch, and much better than the Amber Heard travesty.

Wade Wallenstein

She's in the 2020 version? Glad I never watched it 👍

AdrianF

Yes as Nadine. During the JD trial, she pointed to this role and Aquaman as proof she was a top tier actress capable of landing major roles. That trial is pure popcorn.

Debbie Sarti

Loved the reaction ladies. I think y'al would really enjoy the book. It has so many terrifying parts that wouldn't fit in a 2 hour movie. It would explain a lot that the movie couldn't make clear due to time constraints. I can honestly say the ending is much better in the book.

Totally Whatever

Thanks, Debbie! I'm considering reading it after I finish my current book. All of the comments have made it very tempting.

Leonard VanProoyen

Stanley Kubrick movies do this to you. His attention to detail is probably unmatched and his quest for perfection is apparent when you hear about the actors feeling that filming was pure torture. I think I heard that the scene with Mr Halleran first talking to Danny in the kitchen with ice cream needed over 80 takes! We benefit from this (actors not so much) and you would be in a similar state watching “2001 A Space Odyssey” where you are completely confused but at the same time enamored in the beauty of the final product. Please watch 2001 and know that you will be experiencing one of the finest films ever made…just like “The Shining”

Totally Whatever

80 takes is wild!! Especially with a child actor. “2001 A Space Odyssey” is on our list!
