Close Encounters is a masterpiece of sci-fi, drama, and horror. And nobody portrays a family with young children more accurately than Spielberg. There's always a kid smashing something in the background,

KeithJ

I'm voting for the Andromeda Strain but I know it doesn't have much of a chance this round. ๐Ÿ™‚

Gary Giaimo

Leviathan! Oh man, what a random, delightful selection! letโ€™s do this!

Jake McNulty

A good selection here, but I'm gonna have to go with "Dark City" on this one.

Ron

If Close Encounters of the Third Kind wins, I recommend the Director's Cut.

JoeyVettes

Close Encounters Directors Cut version is the best. Sound and Blu-ray clarity is better than theatrical cut.

Minion_of_Cthulhu

Close Encounters is extremely likely to win this, for good reason, but I had to go with Dark City. I think you'll both enjoy the puzzle aspect of it. When you do get around to watching Dark City, make sure it's the Director's Cut. That version is largely identical to the theatrical cut but, due to studio interference, the theatrical cut spoils the entire twist in a voice over that happens at the very beginning of the movie. The Director's Cut removes the voice over, so expect to be somewhat confused about what's really happening for a while. It's intentional.

They Live and Buckaroo are fun Sci-fi films, and both classics in their own right, but they are all great movies. I voted for They Live because I know how much ya'll love one liners. ๐Ÿ˜ธ

Robert Borcherding

Lot's of great choices. I picked 'The Andromeda Strain' because it is the least likely to be picked later on and you will have missed out on a fantastic movie. If 'They Live' and 'Close Encounters' were to lose this poll, they would easily be picked down the road. I think all three are equally great and all are worth watching.

Bill W

Dark City. Andromeda would have been my 2nd choice.

Joseph George

Voted for Buckaroo because of how insane it is

Harvey Lee

They Live by John Carpenter has so many great lines and is remarkably relevant to today so yes to that one๐Ÿ‘ I wish I could cast a second vote as Dark City is another favorite of mine a Sci Fi Noir film and you can see the influence it has on The Matrix so please watch that one in future .

Joe J

Not surprising the two films getting all the votes (haha). The Andromeda Strain is a fantastic film, but isn't going to place high on polls.

Mike the Ginger

Out of all of these, I have actually only seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind and I think maybe I saw some of Dark City years ago.

Kevin Rubio

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (1977) is Steven Spielberg's third feature film, and an absolute masterpiece! This is one of the few films I wish I could experience for the first time again, but both THEY LIVE (1988) and THE ASVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BONZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION (1984) are great as well.

Totally Whatever

We will be on the lookout for children smashing things. lol

Totally Whatever

If it doesn't win, it might make its way onto another poll.

Totally Whatever

We normally start with the theatrical, but we will look into the director's cut.

Totally Whatever

Well now I'm super interested in Dark City. Carollyn and I LOVE a good puzzle.

Totally Whatever

Seems like we've got a good one coming up - Close Encounters is in the lead!

Totally Whatever

Looks like we might be watching it together again soon. Close Encounters is in the lead.

I have watched The Andromeda Strain, Close Encounters and Dark City several times each. Excellent films. Very different films. Andromeda is clinical in its approach and feels more realistic, incredibly slow paced but still absolutely compelling. Close Encounters is one of the few SF films that powerfully and beautifully evokes a childlike sense of wonder. Dark City is SF neo-noir at its finest. I watched They Live a few months back and I'm not a fan. Maybe my expectations were too high but I found it disappointing overall. I would say the same for Leviathan, a mediocre undersea horror/sf. Alien Resurrection, however, is a total disaster and unintentionally funny in many parts, most notably that bizarre ending. The only good thing I can say about it is it makes Alien 3 look much better by comparison. Because I haven't seen it but would like to I was about to vote for Buckaroo Bonzai but I decided on Close Encounters.

Joe J

What? Close Encounters is going to win....someone please alert the media... ๐Ÿ˜œ

Jeremy V.

Doesnโ€™t look like itโ€™s gonna win but buckaroo bonzai gets my vote every time. It needs to be an impromptu watch. Itโ€™ll never win a poll sadly.

Minion_of_Cthulhu

Can't wait to see the reaction when you guys get around to it!

Totally Whatever

lol, Joe ๐Ÿคฃ It's been on other polls and lost before! Believe it or not.

Totally Whatever

Good to know that Alien Resurrection is, at the very least, better than Alien 3.

Gary Giaimo

Hmm....Something tells me that Leviathan is probably not going to win.

Byrd N. Hand

Well, it might win a poll consisting entirely of equally lesser known titles... ๐Ÿคจ

Joe J

Ladies....maybe have a "Movies That Can Never Win a Poll" poll. At least one has to win (haha).

Jeremy V.

Wow rude. Jeeze a real reactionary here. Buckaroo Banzai is a cult classic. Best line in any movie is in this film and they are words to live by. You have to start watching more movies.๐Ÿฅธ

JAKH

That is like saying "leprosy is better than ebola"

JAKH

Music by John Williams

JAKH

starring Christopher Lloyd, John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, John Yaya, and John Bigboote

Byrd N. Hand

Hey, I like "Buckaroo Banzai," too. I also like films such as "Harold and Maude," "Silent Running," "Nashville," "After Hours," and "Schizopolis," but fully acknowledge they wouldn't win a poll unless it's a poll with other films equally largely known mostly just to film buffs. THAT'S what I meant.

Byrd N. Hand

... or, in a highly ironic twist, they all get the same number of votes, and, thus, *all* win. ๐Ÿ˜

Byrd N. Hand

If you include "Duel" (which *did* later get a theatrical release in Europe), it's his fourth, but, either way, it might've been a little unfair to include it in this poll, since it's far and away the most well-known title of the lot.

Jeremy V.

Fair. I apologize. I might have jumped the gun there.

Kevin Rubio

Spielberg doesn't consider it his first feature, so neither do I.

thebeefmaster

I hope you will do the top 2 vote getters plus 1 of your choice.

Totally Whatever

We will get to 'They Live' and 'Dark City' at some point, don't worry.
