Another annual Scrooge-based viewing along with Scrooged, A christmas Carol (1984 and 1951)

Another highly recommended one is Klaus. This recently became another annual watch

This has definitely been on my must-watch list every year since I was 9 years old. It was the first Muppet film made after the passing of Jim Henson and directed by his son, and for me this marked the beginning of the end of the classic Muppet style. The films that followed became increasingly more targeted for a younger audience, when before, the comedic tone was very different, playing off the personas of the countless professional comedians with whom they appeared. I'm happy every generation is still able to get their Muppet fix, but I miss the the rhythm of the TV show and the first 3-4 movies from the 70s through the early 90s. Thank you so much for this watch-along. I'm sure I'll see it more than once.

This was great! Truly a wholesome film that I watch every year. You should check out some episodes of "The Muppet Show" that ran from 1974 to 1981. Great sketch comedy where you get to see more heckling. Some trivia: Before production began, Sir Michael Caine told producer and director Brian Henson, "I'm going to play this movie like I'm working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I will never wink, I will never do anything Muppety. I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role, and there are no puppets around me." Henson replied "Yes, bang on!"

Oh no, we didn’t realize that this was after he passed. This is another one that’s going to be added to our personal yearly watch list.

Thanks, Wade. We will check those out. Michael Caine absolutely played this as if it was for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was brilliant!’

This was wonderful! Just what I needed to put me in the Christmas mood:)

I just watched that recently. It’s a fantastic movie.

The opening title sequence is indeed a large miniature. I really like how the Muppets are just actors in a different movie. Fozzy Bear plays “Fozzywig” and so on. I like how there are real horses *and* Muppet horses in the movie! I hope you consider “A Christmas Carol” (1984) with George C Scott for a future watch. It is so moody atmosphere. Plus, it was filmed on location so it looks fantastic. I assume Scrooge lives in the servant’s bedroom in his large and otherwise empty house because why else would there be a bell in the bedroom? The boxes that are chained to the ghosts of the Marley brothers are the strongboxes full of money they took from the poor over their careers. I think the curtains with the canopy batter are to help hold the heat in. I don’t believe there’s any other filmed version of the story that has a child as it goes to Christmas past. It’s a very interesting design. And the way she is designed, she’s not like a Muppet and not like a human but something in between. And you are correct the Muppet was filmed underwater to get the flowing effect. The name of Fozziwig’s business is “Fozziwig and Mom”! Fun reaction.

The scene in the past with Belle, when she breaks up with Scrooge, there's a musical number that was deleted from the theatrical version; certain studio executives felt it was too sad for a children's movie. If you re-watch the movie next year, on Disney+ under the "Extras" tab, you can choose to watch the full-length version. The scene with the Ghost of Christmas Present, when Scrooge sees Fred call him an unwanted creature, is always heartbreaking, and Michael Caine's acting is so on point. And a fun Easter egg to look for, near the end, when Scrooge is leading everyone around town, they pass a shop called Mickelwhite's, which is Michael Caine's real last name.

I've had an association (by proxy) with the Muppets. My best friend has been a Muppeteer for over 30 years. I spoke with Jim Henson a week before his tragic passing. I've been fortunate to be on stage and watch the puppeteers work their magic. It's already been said in this forum that this was the first film w/o Jim, and that Michael played this completely serious. What has not been said was how much this film helped the Muppeteers cope with the loss of Jim. Doing this film made the whole year a Christmas festival. It did a lot to lift their spirits. I cannot share it here, but ladies, I will share privately, some clips of the Muppeteers in action. But for everyone, if Henson's Puppet-Up comes to your town GO SEE IT!!! https://youtu.be/sf-i8kn9sJE?si=SY7_KjmPTv7O_ir1 https://www.instagram.com/puppetup https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSXjRCJjpDO/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

Thanks, REDR58! Absolutely love that their business name is Fozziwig and Mom” - so cute. I didn't even think about there being real horses AND muppet horses.

Totally Whatever

What a fun easter egg - I'll look for that next time. We will also look for those extras.

Knowing how much this helped everyone heal after his death warms the heart. It must have been wonderful to have met the genius himself and have backstage access to the magic! We are a wee bit jealous ;)
