What we do in life echoes through eternity. I guess I’ll be watching a lot of Schwarzenegger and Stallone movies in heaven.

Terry In the UK

Epic film... sometimes though, after watching a film I get an urge to do something, like Rocky ... I wanna go exercise. But every time I've seen Gladiator.....strangely, I have NEVER had the urge to fight a tiger...🐅 Hope you're both having a great day.

I think I know what I'm doing tonight. What a movie. I just started getting into cinema and movies as a teenager in the late 90s, though back then it was mostly through VHS. After The Phantom Menace the year before, this was the second movie I wanted to watch in theater. I remember seeing this film twice on the big screen. The first time was in our awful local theater. Uncomfortable chairs, a screen literally rolled down on the stage, and a few speakers set up on the sides. Because of that, I rarely watched movies there. Still, with this movie, it was an experience. The second time was a few months later, when we traveled to the capital, where some multiplex cinemas had just opened in the years before. It was my first time seeing a movie on a proper large screen with DTS surround sound. Now, that was an experience I'll never forget.

I'm a heathen, but no, I've never been entertained by this one. I might give it one more go if my disc has the version you've watched on it - the app I use to keep track of what's where says I have 2h35m version, shrug.

Totally Whatever

It had to be amazing as a first-time large-screen DTS watch!!

Totally Whatever

We watched the theatrical release on Amazon, if that helps.

Totally Whatever

If yours matches, I'll change the time - I'm not convinced that Amazon lists accurate runtimes.

AdrianF

I'll let you both know later on - the app I use is 'fed' by users so don't have total trust in it either!

AdrianF

It seems to line up so far with the 4K theatrical perfectly. 32 mins in (furthest I've ever gotten jejeje)

Yesssss!!!!! You did watched this with the blessing of Sven! Have not watched your reaction yet but I have a long flight this weekend and this will be great!

John Zelinka

You can keep this one....not for me.

I love this movie and I think you loved it too! Joaquin Phoenix was a creepy creeperson, sneaky sneakerson and a stinker all rolled into one.

Bill Elliott

Yeah you could not leave this one on the table.

Hello ladies only few characters existed in real life except for Maximus which he was a fictional character. But the idea is that there was one event where Rome did had a Gladiator Uprising back in 73 B.C.E. and Spartacus was their leader. So you can see they somehow romanticize that event and made it into a fictional movie. Gladiator won a couple of awards including some Oscars for Best Picture, Best Visual Effects & Best Costume Design, I know you ladies liked the costumes in some of the characters so there you go. Joaquin Phoenix was only a nominee for Best Supporting Actor but lost to Benicio del Toro.

Totally Whatever

Yes, we did! Joaquin Phoenix is the ultimate creepy creeperson/sneaky sneakerson. lol

Totally Whatever

Hi, Francisco -thanks for the extra info. Yes, we love the costumes in the one. Joaquin Phoenix definitely deserved that nomination.

FranciscoGios

He sure did!! Joaquin was fantastic in that role!

I'm late to watching this reaction, but did I understand that Sven Thorsen actually recommended the film to you guys? I didn't realize until recently he was the same actor in Conan the Barbarian with the mighty hammer. Also, you may already know but this was the great Oliver Reed's last film as he died during filming from a heart attack after a massive drinking and arm-wrestling contest with Royal Navy sailors at a local pub in Malta. He collapsed and died on the way to the hospital. CGI was required to finish his scenes. On May 2nd 1999, Reed reportedly consumed: - Three bottles of Jamaican rum - Eight pints (or bottles) of German beer - Half a bottle of whiskey - Several double shots of Famous Grouse whiskey and Hennessy cognac

I'm a little late to this one. I've been dealing with family stuff. My good friend Charles de Lazurika was the documentarian on this film, and has been Ridley's documentarian since 1992. If the two of you are interested in finding out more about this production, I highly recommend you seek out the box set blu-rays. of any of Ridley's films. The docs are very comprehensive and a master's class in the art of filmmaking. As far as the comment, "he's neve been to Rome?" That was the case for many within the Empire, yet outside of the city. You could spend your whole life in Rome's service yet never see her. I've lived 58 years on this earth. I've traveled the world. I've been to Rome, yet I've never stepped foot in Washington D.C. (something I hope to do this year) This film won the Academy Award for best picture of 2000, and Best Actor for Russel Crowe. They started shooting without a completed script. Sword and sandal pictures (as they were commonly known in the 50s/60s) were box office poison in this era. No one thought it would work. Oliver Reed (Proximus) died halfway through filming. They used other takes from previously filmed shots to complete his scenes toward the end of the film. Richard Harris and Oliver Reed were part of the British Hellraisers". a group of British/Irish actors known for their wild cohousing, drinking and sexual dalliances. Other members included Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton. One of the first films to uses digital crowds duplication. The horses on Maximus' armor translate from Latin as "Silver" (The Lone Ranger's horse) and "Trigger" (Roy Roger's horse).

Thanks for the shout-out, especially when aligned with such an epic film. Several years ago, during a 4-day cruise with my wife, I attended the boat's Trivia games three times per day. Each session had between 20 and 50 people, and I won each time. What I learned later is that Trivia games were happening on the other end of the boat at the same time, and that another guy was winning every round over there. So, on the final night of the cruise, he and I were asked to attend a Trivia Game Show on the Main Stage. The auditorium was packed, they had a live band, and it was him and me going head-to-head in pop culture trivia. At the end of the game, we were tied, so they decided on a sudden-death, winner-take-all final question. The first to ring in with the correct answer would win. The question began, "In this 2000 epic film..." I buzzed in and stopped the question after those first 5 words. The crowd was restless as the host leaned in to ask for my answer. I said, "Gladiator." There was a long pause, the host yelled, "CORRECT!," and the crowd lost their minds! It was absolutely hilarious. All that to say, I've always been thankful to Gladiator for helping me win a Trivia Game Show... LOL!

Totally Whatever

Yes, Sven recommended this to us. It's his favorite. I'm shocked at how much he consumed! RIP Oliver Reed

Totally Whatever

Thanks, as always, for the wonderful trivia. We will keep an eye out for a box set to watch some of the docs for this one.

Totally Whatever

LOL What a fantastic story, thanks for sharing. The perfect film for a Crimson Ace shout-out! We aren't at all surprised you walked away with the trivia trophy ;)

No way to avoid a nerd factoid from me here: though it may seem strange that Marcus Aurelius would not pick Commodus to lead Rome, he was the last of what historian Edward Gibbon called the five good emperors of Rome. Starting with Nerva, one of their hallmarks was that they did not pick a nearby relative to lead, but at best a cousin and someone they thought capable of being an effective ruler. Nerva picked Trajan, who took Rome to its height, Trajan picked Hadrian (he of Hadrian’s wall, parts of which still stand, Terry in the UK back me up here), then Pious Antonius, then Marcus Aurelius.

Bill Elliott

Great quotes from you guys in this one too, “Smug little turd” and “cut off the chain…. Oh jeeze not like that!”
