Oh no I’ll have that song by Europe bouncing around in my head , probably for days.

I absolutely loved this film after first watching it many years ago...a great story. It's also one of the very few and rare movies that I truly believe has the potential for a remake to be really good. Many thanks for watching this and a round of applause and extra thanks to Brad for requesting it.... Can't wait to watch along with you both. Another movie that I'm positive you'd enjoy after seeing this, that has a similar vibe is "The Philadelphia Experiment" from 1984... It's a great time travel film where 2 U.S. sailors get flung 40 years into the future during a navy expirement. I highly recommended this 80s sci-fi classic, one of the best of it's time.

The Final Countdown is not the worst song to get stuck in your head. I went for a week with the theme from The Muppet's Show in my brain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ9yAV8uQ7g I think they got a lot of this from Star Trek and the time/space continuum. The time paradox etc. When they announced a body, I expected to hear "He'd dead, Jim." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3at_Ev2kOoI I like the movie though. I see a real resemblance between Martin and Charlie Sheen. I have seen the Japanese prisoner in tons of stuff. He was on Stargate SG-1, Kung Fu The Legend Continues, Greatest American Hero, MASH (the TV show), Logan's Run, and Kung Fu (The original series, still one of my favorite shows to this day). His IMDB list has nearly every show in the 70s and 80s. Hard to believe he missed out on Tora! Tora! Tora! and Midway! Katharine Ross was in tons of stuff, too, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I've seen Charles Durning all my life. NCIS and Oh Brother Where Are Thou, and he was the dirty cop in The Sting. I saw lots of other familiar faces, too, but I've seen TV and movies since the 1950s. It's just hard to remember them all at times. Thank God for IMDB. Speaking of Kirk Douglas's command voice, compare that to all the Captain's voices in Red October. I guess the casting people seek a command voice. Great movie, great reaction, and two of my favorite reactors!

The first time I saw this movie... I was around 10! We rented it from a video rental place... lol. It's been one of my favorites since! To date this movie has the best and most authentic naval aviation of any movie. During the dog fight with the Zero's, that first zero was shot down by a the F-14's gun. You saw a puff a smoke from the F-14 and then you saw the smoke from the Zero. The F-14's gun is the M61 Vulcan, its a 20mm Gatlin cannon. So a short burst from that gun sent hundreds of rounds towards the Zero. Side note.. the "Zero's" were actually painted up T6 Texans. I don't believe there are any surviving Zero's in flyable condition post war. The T6's did a great job portraying Zeros. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) would actually be a good follow up to this movie.

Great movie. Watched it many times as a kid. I wish the categories hadn't spoiled the fact that it dealt with time travel. That would've been a good surprise.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I definitely enjoyed watching your reactions. As I mentioned before, I was obsessed with this movie as a kid and must have watched it more than hundred times. The flying scenes are still some of the best ever put on film. Even today, I consider the F-14 Tomcat to be one of the most beautiful fighter jets ever made. The filmmakers had full cooperation from the Navy because they believed it would help recruitment. But it didn't really work out that way, which made the Navy somewhat hesitant a few years later when another production approached them, which was Top Gun. One fun bit of trivia: in one scene where they're chasing a "Zero", an F-14 comes dangerously close to the sea. Early versions of those planes were notorious for stalling at low speed, which was necessary to put them together with much slower propeller planes. I once watched a YouTube interview where the pilots talked about the production. Apparently, they were still teasing the pilot involved, insisting he still keeps "sticking to the story" that this maneuver was intentional. Allegedly, his wife was even brought into post-production, where they showed her the footage, recorded her scream, and mixed it into the audio of the scene as part of the jet engine. Regarding the time-travel paradoxes mentioned in the movie, here's an additional thought. The movie's conclusion suggests that even if you travel to the past, you can't change history, because events have already unfolded the way they did. But if you follow that logic a bit further, it would also imply that our present and future are predetermined as well, since the present is simply the past from the perspective of the future. In that sense, everything happening right now would already have only one possible outcome. Finally, I'd also recommend Tora! Tora! Tora! Some footage from that movie was even reused in in this one depicting the attack. In my opinion, it's a better Pearl Harbor movie than the 2001 version. What also makes it truly unique is that the Japanese and American perspectives were directed and produced separately by Japanese and American production crews, giving both sides a more authentic portrayal.

Now that you have seen this movie I recommend the 1984 novie The Philadelphia Experiment. It’s basically the reverse of Final Countdown where two sailors are sent 40 years into the future FROM 1943.

Totally Whatever

I can't believe they showed the footage to his wife and used her scream in the audio! We have Tora! Tora! Tora! on our list for the future.

Totally Whatever

A whole week with The Muppet Show theme - lol We saw the resemblance between them too.

Totally Whatever

Yes, this does have remake potential. We have The Philadelphia Experiment on the list - sound interesting.

Totally Whatever

We are definitely adding Tora! Tora! Tora! to our watch list.

Benjamin Gerrald

Great idea I wish more reactors would watch different things instead of the same tired stuff.

Great reaction, Nanolyn! Given that I'm a WWII buff and a science fiction geek, it might come as a surprise that I had never seen this movie! I quite enjoyed it. Like you, I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at naval operations and the classic time travel tropes. And I agree that Kirk Douglas was fantastic! I don't remember either of you noticing that the character of Laurel Scott, the senator's aide and speechwriter, was played by the fabulous Katharine Ross, who also portrayed Etta Place in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid! For fans of this genre, I highly recommend the Axis of Time series by author John Birmingham, which relates a similar story in which a multinational, 21st-century naval task force is transported back in time to WWII. Not surprisingly, the novels go into much more detail about the challenges of such a situation: yes, the modern ships and aircraft would obviously be far more powerful, but what would happen when they run low on jet fuel, missiles, and spare parts? How do male and female sailors of different ethnicities and nationalities fit into the comparatively sexist and racist society of the 1940s? Excellent reading!

Totally Whatever

Thanks, Phil! We are surprised that you have never seen this, but we are so happy to be with you during your first watch. We didn't realize that was Katharine Ross.

The age old question, if you went back in time would you kill Hitler before he came into power?.Might I suggest a movie called The Philadelphia Experiment. Same thing only in the other direction. Anyways this was a great watch ladies.

Jay Davis

HAD to come back for this reaction. The first example of alternate history wish-fulfillment fantasy movie I recall ever seeing and fell in love with it first time I saw it.

Totally Whatever

Thanks for watching with us. We have The Philadelphia Experiment on our list!

Charles Durning also played the father in the movie Tootsie, who wanted "Dorothy Michaels" to marry him!
