🎵🎶🎹 Goodness gracious,.. Great Balls of fire 🎹🎶🎵 🔥🔥 Great film, can't wait to press play. Thank you Nanette, Thank you Carolyn.

Michael Keenan

My best friend was obsessed with this movie. I think he saw it 8+ times. His poor wife filed for divorce within months of this movie being released. So this is for you Bill W.

RegalEagle

Great reaction! Not a big deal if course.. but the order of theatrical release was ‘The Final Countdown’ and then ‘Top Gun’.. and the order that you watched them was the same.. .. curious to see you decided to release them on Patreon in reverse order.. Again.. absolutely no big deal.. I think both movies are great in their own way.. they certainly didn’t collaborate when either was made.. .. but, one thing that sets these two apart is that neither could have been made without the help of the US Navy…

Brian Landers

now its time for top gun Maverick.. i cant wait for that reaction... the tears will flow again.....

Phil Stubblefield

I'll be the voice of dissent here and say that, while I certainly like this movie, I've never quite understood its iconic stature. I understand the good stuff: the groundbreaking flight scenes, the story arc with Goose, the rivalry with Iceman — all fantastic! What I didn't get was the relationship between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. Their chemistry wasn't particularly compelling to me, and I didn't like many of the choices that their characters made. And lest you think I'm just a "love hater" (😂), I really liked his relationship in the sequel. (FYI, the fact that a Tom Cruise character has a love interest does not in and of itself constitute a spoiler... 😉) So I'll enjoy this reaction... but I'm really looking forward to its sequel!

AdrianF

When is the Maverick reaction coming? :innocent face:

AdrianF

I took/dragged my ex to see Titanic 10 times over a fortnight. She loved it so much.

FUN FACTS HOW DID THEY EVEN DO THAT?1 In actuality the couldn't. The vertical tails are to big big and would not allow you to engage canopy to canopy. The wide shots of the dogfights, when you see the whole plane were done by real Navy pilots. The close-ups of the planes were models flown around and near the San Francisco Bay Area. The actors never left the ground during filming. Their cockpits were all in studio. They also always fly w/ their visors down and their masks in place. The studio paid a lot of money for Tom Cruise so the insisted that you at least be able to see his face. There is no TOP GUN Trophy. all of the real pilots are so competitive that if the made it a competition they would have a lot of wrecked planes and dead pilots. James Tolkan (Cmdr, Jordan akak Commander exposition) is best known as Principle Strikland in BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985). Sadly James passed this March. Penny Benjamin plays a major role in TOP GUN MAVERICK (2022). "Charlie's" date at the bar was the actual Top Gun advisor for the film. Navy pilots do not have cool call signs like "Maverick" and "Ice". They have call signs like "Bozo" or "Slapdash" and they don't name themselves. Other pilots give you your name. The Air Force has "cool" names. The elevator scene was a re-shoot. Kelly's wearing a hat because she had died her hair for her latest film. Tom's hair is wet because he had grown it out for TH.E COLOR OF MONEY (1986) and they wetted it down to make it look shorter. I DON'T RECOGNIZE THIS ACTOR/"BACK-LIT-HAIR" This is actress Kelly McGillis. She's probably best known as Harrison Ford's co-star in the movie WITNESS (1985), and Jodi Foster's co-star in THE ACCUSED (1988). She was under contract tov Paramount at the time. Kelly's hair is back-lit, and they are both filmed in silhouette because this was a re-shoot and their looks changed because they both had other projects. Solution? Put them in shadow. WHERE ARE THEY? The motor cycle drive w/ Charlie and Mav, was most likely filmed on South Embarcadero St in San Diego, near the "Top Gun Bar" located at 600 W Harbor Dr., San Diego CA 92101. YOU'VE GOT TO LET HIM GO? They needed Maverick to let go so they could hoist him into the helicopter, but it also works as a metaphor. The hospital exterior is on the Paramount lot. Another re-shoot. (NOT SO FUN FACT - DOG TAGS) Service men and women wear dog tags with all of their information on them for identification in case they are wounded and unresponsive. It contains necessary medical info and military I.D. number. There are two of them so that if a person dies in battle on the field one can be sent back for notification and family. The other stays with the body so that it can be matched. I won't tell you how they insure it stays with the body. It's too gruesome. Charlie's house (The Graves House) was located at 102 N. Pacific St. Oceanside CA. It was moved years later to 250 N. Pacific St. The MIG-28 country of origin is never mentioned. This was to not insult any foreign countries. The MIG-28 is also a fake plane. There is no such thing as a MIG-28. During filming, the US Navy allowed the production company to shoot and film one missile. ('Cause they're expensive as ****). Clever editing multiplied the shot so it looked as though they shot more than they were allotted. It was so convincing that the Navy had to review it. The move Maverick does is called a Cobra. The US military was not in the best light after Vietnam, even in the 80s when Vietnam films were all the rage. This film became the best recruitment piece the Navy ever had. As a result, they gave the sequel - TOP GUN MAVERIC (2922) unprecedented access, including allowing the production company to actually film in the real cockpits this time around. In a very rare occurrence the sequel is superior to the original. Kelly McGillis did not return. Anthony Edwards would later go one to star in the hit television series E.R. "The need for speed" and the Danger Zone" are synonymous with this movie. Kenny Logins refers to this hit song as his 'Tina Turner phase' of his career. My buddy Charles DeLazurika, produced all of the behind the scenes docs for the 25th anniversary DVD. Here is one below. https://youtu.be/KmT8QZS1Crc?si=NA-Ff_y44DksdqBA YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD WATCH THE NEXT ONE... LIKE RIGHT NOW!!!

Mike the Ginger

Tom Cruise can be an acquired taste. I don't mind this movie, but I was never as head over heels about it compared to other 1980s action films.

Mark M

This was a great reaction! The soundtrack is outstanding. I found out that Giorgio Moroder(Scarface) helped to compose some of the songs. 'Witness', starring Harrison Ford is a great movie that co-stars Kelly McGillis. What would your call sign be if you were at Top Gun? I think Nanette's would be 'Visor' while Carolyn would be 'Skeeter':)

David Zabel

RIP James "Stinger" Tolkan who just passed away this past March.

Mark M

He gave Maverick and Marty McFly a hard time. RIP.

Cameron Kerby

So glad y’all are watching Top Gun: Maverick next week. 😉

Flounder

I noticed there is no full length reaction to Risky Business. Are you ever planning a reaction to it?

Totally Whatever

We have it on our list. We have a lot of Tom Cruise movies to watch.

Totally Whatever

We normally share the full-length of our Friday YT movie on Wednesdays - which is why we scheduled it that way. Our Thursday full-length will be a poll winner, Reactr or something else.

RegalEagle

Ok.. nice to see the YT edit so quickly!

Totally Whatever

Answering all of our questions, once again! Thanks, Kevin. ❤️

Totally Whatever

Seems like we will need to watch the sequel sooner than later.

RegalEagle

I’m also monsterously STOKED for you to watch the sequel!

fire12wife

I love this movie, but I'm not in love with Maverick and Charlie's relationship in this movie. For me, their chemistry is off.

fire12wife

However, the sequel is incredible! To me, it's the best sequel ever made!

fire12wife

Merlin, played by Tim Robbins, was first Cougar's RIO (Radar Intercept Officer). Since Cougar turned in his wings, Merlin needed a pilot, and Maverick needed a RIO, so they put them together!

fire12wife

Actually, the "older" guy at the bar that was with Charlie in the bar was the real life Viper ...and yes, that's his actual call sign!

REDR58

Yes, “Witness” (1985) is an excellent movie.

REDR58

One funny thing is that Charlie mentions that the F-5 (Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter) is used as a “MiG simulator” and the “MiG 28” enemy jets are just black-painted F-5 jets. In reality, the F-5 was and still is used to simulate enemy aircraft.

REDR58

Keep in mind “the Admiral‘s daughter” who is mentioned in “Top Gun.”

REDR58

Speaking of the RIO (like Goose), he cannot fly the aircraft as there are no rear flight controls. In the F-14, the RIO is responsible for operating the aircraft’s radar set, monitoring the weapons, navigation, communications and to help the pilot find enemy aircraft. In some other types of aircraft that have two crewmembers, the back seater can fly the aircraft. Edit, generally speaking, most if not all US Air Force Jets that have a rear crew members, flight controls are provided, such as in the F-4 Phantom, F-15 Eagle and others. However, 2-seat US Navy aircraft do not have rear controls as far as I can tell.

fire12wife

Top Gun: Maverick (2022) is the best sequel ever made in my opinion. Tom Cruise put 7 cameras in each of the jets, so the cinematography in that movie is INCREDIBLE! You have to watch it... I promise you, you will love it! There is so much more to discuss after you watch it... this weekend I hope!!! I joined this Patreon, because I wanted to see your reaction, and to help convince you to see the sequel!

REDR58

Also, I like to think that Jester’s callsign is an irony because he seems rather humorless.

REDR58

They should absolutely watch the sequel!

REDR58

The late Tony Scott, brother of Ridley Scott, is the director here. Ridley Scott directed Alien. Speaking of, you’ve seen Tom Skerritt (Viper) before in “Alien” as Dallas, as the captain of the Nostromo. The aircraft carrier that they operate from is the now-retired USS Enterprise (CVN-65). It was the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and was in service from 1961 to 2017. Cruise was about 22 at the time of the filming of this movie and McGillis was 28.

fire12wife

I was 11 when Top Gun (1986) first came out. My father's a pilot and had already seen the movie when I asked to go, and he said no, that it was too mature for me! So I spent the night at my cousin's house and she took me! She was 17 and worked at the cinema... I saw lots of movies that way, lol! Top Gun (1986) has always been in my top 5 of all time favorites. Goose has always been my favorite character. Meg Ryan as his wife Carole was a great pick. They are so cute together! However, I can't help but think that Meg would have been a better Charlie. I do like Kelly McGillis, I just don't really see the chemistry between them. Funny thing though, is that Meg Ryan dated both Anthony Edwards and Tom Cruise at different times after the filming of this movie was over. Also Kelly McGillis was with Barry Tubb who played Wolfman during the filming, and for 2 years after. They were living together and no one knew! The soundtrack for this movie is one of the best of all time! Kenny Loggins and Berlin were so fantastic! Take My Breath Away by Berlin was used in the last minute love scene between Maverick and Charlie. They had to shoot it in silhouette like that because Kelly had already started shooting another film when they called her back, and she had dyed her hair dark again, so they had to shoot it in the dark with the blue lighting. That's also why Charlie is wearing a baseball hat in the elevator scene, to cover her dark hair. They also had to have Tom's hair slicked back and wet like he just worked out with a towel around his neck like he was headed for the showers, because Tom's hair had grown out for another role, so that was how they hid it! The other issue they had with Tom and Kelly, was that Kelly is 4 inches taller than Tom. She was often barefoot or kept behind Tom during a scene to hide it. It took 36 YEARS for the sequel to come out, but it was worth every minute! It was crazy, all that went into it. Tom Cruise told the cast and crew that making a sequel to Top Gun (1986) was like trying to hit a bullet with a bullet... I'd say they did it! As much as I love the original movie, the sequel is way better! Can't wait for you to watch it, so we can talk about it! Top Gun: Maverick (2022) took in $1.5 BILLION in the box office, and is Tom Cruise's biggest movie of his career! The cast is absolutely INCREDIBLE! I promise, you will be blown away! Thanks for a great reaction! I'll be diving into your other content, while we all wait for your reaction to Top Gun: Maverick (2022)!

fire12wife

My brother was an air traffic controller on an air craft carrier in the late '90s, but we grew up in the submarine capitol of the world in Groton, CT. We have the Naval Subase, and Electric Boat that builds them. They are also running a school on that base. I grew up around cars with license plates from all over. I took my first job out of cosmetology school at the barber shop on base! Talk about haircut bootcamp! lol

Totally Whatever

Thanks for joining our Patreon! We might push the sequel up to an earlier slot.

Totally Whatever

I love that you snuck into the theater with your cousin, sounds like the ultimate 80s movie-going experience! We are trying to push Top Gun: Maverick up in our schedule, but it will take a little time. Stay tuned.

fire12wife

The only time they really showed Merlin without his helmet on, is after the final mission, and they're all cheering and congratulating each other! Don't feel bad, I've seen this movie probably thousands of times at this point, and I didn't realize that he was playing Merlin, either... until after the sequel came out and I was watching all of the reactions! lol! Yeah, I think I've seen most all of them... first and 2nd movie...at some point, lol! I didn't even know reactions were a thing until after Top Gun: Maverick came out! Now, I'm hooked!

fire12wife

REDR58 All 2 seater jets should have that capability! It's crazy that the WZO has no way to save themselves or the aircraft, should the pilot become unable to get them to safety and land the plane. It's 2026, and they haven't figured that out yet? We put man on the moon, and they can't add controls for the back seaters?!?!?!?

fire12wife

You are going to be BLOWN AWAY... and I promise you, I don't just say that. We'll all be here waiting, semi-patiently! lol! Thanks for working that movie magic!

Totally Whatever

Oh, good. We were so shocked to see him at the end. It can be intimidating to record a first-time reaction to a movie. You don't want to miss important information and look stupid ;) So glad you found reaction channels - and that you stumbled across ours.

REDR58

fire12wife this talk of rear seats reminds me of an incident during the Vietnam War called “Pardo’s Push” where a USAF F-4 Phantom was damaged by enemy fire and started to lose fuel. The jet did not have enough fuel to reach relatively friendly territory and another Phantom piloted by a man named Bob Pardo attempted to help push the other jet by slowly coming up behind and underneath so he could use his jet to push against the extended tail hook of the damaged F-4 and help get it out of enemy airspace: https://youtu.be/MlxAa8fdjgg?si=L-rOYiArM1n2EZRN https://www.airandspaceforces.com/article/valor-pardos-push/
