In the opening - "We don't want to miss a thing" Is that an intentional Liv Tyler reference, or just coincidence?

AdrianF

Great start, can't wait for tomorrow!

David

There is indeed a lot of lore about Middle Earth that isn't in the films. There's a lot that isn't even in the Lord of the Rings books. The posthumously released "The Silmarillion" covers the creation story, the cosmology, and then goes on with stories about a time when Sauron was just a small-time lackey for the original villain. It includes the story of Luthien and Beren, mentioned in passing by Aragorn in this film.

We have quickly become wrapped up in the LOTR world and need to know more.

David

Speaking of which, have you guys watched Armageddon? I know you reacted to Deep Impact. Funny that Arwen and Frodo both had meteor disaster movies that went head to head in the box office.

Phil Stubblefield

Now that we lowly Legendary members can access this post, I just came here to say: Wheeeee! LOTR with TW! It's hard to get much better than that! Thanks, Nanolyn! 💯 TBH, I'll be waiting until tomorrow so that I can watch both halves together.

Mark M

I was originally going to wait until tomorrow so I could watch both parts but I couldn't resist. I had to watch today. Thankfully Frodo got his 'Elvis' medicine:) Thank-you. Thank-you very much:)

Totally Whatever

We released Part 2 early because we love our Patrons so darn much!

Phil Stubblefield

You're the best, Nanette and Carolyn! ❤️ Notice how I made the effort to spell out both of your names rather than just typing "Nanolyn"... That's because you're worth it! 💯

I read The Hobbit in 1994 when I was in 8th Grade and a few more times before this film came out. "The incident with the Dragon" Gandalf mentions is from that story. I saw these films in the theater when they first came out and was blown away. I still have the instrumental soundtracks for all 3! The extended editions were in theaters January of this year for the 25th Anniversary. I knew where you were going to split the reaction since it's the same way the Extended Edition DVD split it lol

Great start. Some people may have mentioned some of this but I wanted to point out a couple things. Gandalf did not know Bilbo had the One Ring. He just knew he found a magic ring in Gollum's cave that made him invisible. There are many magic rings in this world, not just the ones related to the One. But he was beginning to suspect something. The One Ring had been missing for 3,000 years. When Gandalf left the ring with Frodo and went to do research, in the movie he seemed to return fairly quickly. In the books, he was gone for 15 to 20 years before he returned to the Shire. He also spent a lot of time looking for Gollum, but did not find him. This is also why Bilbo was able to put on the ring without drawing attention. Sauron had not yet returned to power and the ring had not yet heard its masters call. The writing appeared on the ring because Gandalf threw it into the fire. During his research he read that the markings on the band had faded, a secret now only fire can tell. Saruman had actually turned bad years and years ago. He was searching for the ring for himself before Sauron ever returned to power. There's more backstory to that, but I'll leave it there. Some people get annoyed at Frodo constantly trying to put on the ring, but he is not wanting to put on the ring. The ring is trying to be found and is compelling him to do that. The ring wants to return to Sauron.

Fantastic start, Nanolyn! I just love watching the emotions play over your faces: surprise, dread, disgust, humor. You are both so wonderfully expressive! One of the things that makes first-time reactions to this film so delightful is that every reactor says the same thing (which is a tribute to excellent film making): "I want to be a Hobbit and live in the Shire!" "No, wait! I want to be an Elf and live in Rivendell!" 😂 But I cannot believe you talked over the most famous meme in the entire trilogy! Elrond and Gandalf had just described the necessity of destroying the ring in the fires of Mount Doom. "One of you must do this..." You both laughed at the ensuring silence and commented, "Crickets!" That *is* a funny observation, but you missed Boromir's next line: "One does not simply walk into Mordor." https://miro.medium.com/v2/1*nJjmPRpVe4k7SkihH1LJkw.jpeg Looking forward to part 2, which for me begins right now! 😁

Totally Whatever

You were correct! I can't even imagine how amazing these films are on the big screen!!

Totally Whatever

Thank you! That really clarifies things. A 15-to-20-year gap is a massive difference compared to the few days it felt like in the movie. It makes complete sense now that the ring was compelling him to put it on, and that Bilbo had a totally different experience since Sauron hadn't actually returned yet.

Totally Whatever

Haha, I was just wondering how our reactions compare to other reactors - where we are the same and where we split gears a bit! I knew we would miss some really good lines. Thanks for the link!

Wade Wallenstein

I was 21 at the time and they were amazing! Wish I could've seen the extended in the theater

Mr. Writhms

We didn't have to wait long in between movies because director Peter Jackson shot all 3 movies at the same time in one production. So we only had to wait one year apart. The Fellowship of the Ring — December 19, 2001 The Two Towers — December 18, 2002 The Return of the King — December 17, 2003

Just joined your channel and excited to take this journey with you!

David Perkins

just got here, specifically for this! i've wanted to join your patreon for a while and i promised myself that if you ever did lotr that i would join then. i was going to wait till you'd done them all and then i saw that you're also watching "the stand" so i just couldn't wait. as some have already said, the lore for this world is a lot! Tolkien actually created the languages first and then built middle earth around them. he was a remarkable man. he was a veteran of wwI and was deeply affected by his experiences. and his love for his wife was every bit as romantic as the romance between Aragorn and Arwen. i highly recommend doing a little research into his life. anyway, thanks for sharing this awesome reaction. i'm off to watch part 2!

Totally Whatever

Welcome, David! We are so happy to have you here. We love hearing that Tolkien's love for his wife inspired Aragorn and Arwen's romance. ❤️
