I’m a day late on this one and much has already been said about the production, so I thought I would leave my comments here in the free edit. Well much was made in the marketing of this film about the use of real aircraft, and the actors filming themselves in the cockpits it did give the impression (the one the Studio’s wanted) that no visual effects were used. This could not be further from the truth. There are CGI planes and visual effects all over this film. The greatest example is the F-14 Comcast used in the final sequence. There are no flight worthy F-14 Comcast left in the United States. The One used was grounded and was repainted for the film. Anytime you see it moving or in the air it is completely CGI, or it is another aircraft with an F-14 skin layered on top. While the Navy did participate in this film and did do a lot of of the flying maneuvers that were captured, there are still certain stunts that they would not allow. Tom Cruise is the best recruiter they’ve ever had and they love him, but we’re still dealing with billions of dollars of aircraft paid for by the United States taxpayer. No fifth generation fighters were used in this film. Again, they are either entirely CGI or skins placed on top of other aircraft. Likewise, the maneuvers that Tom was pulling when he was dog fighting against the top gun graduates were manipulated. The Navy would never allow a fighter jet to slice between two other aircraft at such close range and speed. Neither would they ditch a plane solely for a film or go into a spiral dive. All that being said, it is a brilliant piece of film work and worthy of its box office.

Movie magic!

We were wondering how much of the movie was CGI. It makes sense that they wouldn't be allowed to attempt certain maneuvers. It all blended seamlessly.

Thanks guys for watching this movie! I really enjoyed the throwbacks to the first film, with the one that gets missed being a comment Rooster says during the F-14 vs. 5th Gen Fighter dogfight, when Rooster says "Come on, Mav, do some of that pilot s**t", which is what Goose says to Mav during the Mav vs. Viper sequence. When I went and saw this at the movies, when it came out, the scene with Iceman hit really home to me. My dad had died of cancer a couple of months before, and my boss at work had just been diagnosed with cancer (and died a couple of months later), so that just hit a lot closer to home.

Thank you so much for sharing your personal memory. That scene is difficult to watch, especially coming so soon after such a heartbreaking loss.
