The CTA trains in this remind me so much of the overhead CTA trains in ‘The Blues Brothers’ (1980)…

RegalEagle

I know Miles Dalby (Curtis Armstrong) from TV’s ‘Moonlighting’ with Bruce Willis.. though I know he’s been in a lot of other things..

RegalEagle

Oops.. gotta use the correct terminology for the CTA trains.. not ‘overhead’.. should be ‘elevated’ or ‘EL’ for short.. I learned that from ‘The Fugitive (1991)..

Just before Joel opens the door in the shower, you can see the walls on the left and right are sliding past the back wall shower itself. Joel's father's Porsche is a 1979 Porsche 928 and I unfortunately think it's one of the ugliest road cars Porsche has made. But, to each his or her own! And there is no way that Guido (Joe Pantoliano) should be able to keep up with it in his 1975 Cadillac Coupe DeVille but I'll chalk that up to Joel (Tom Cruise) being an inexperienced driver! The filming location of Joel's house is at 1258 Linden AveHighland Park, IL. It seems to have changed a bit, but it is still recognizable: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1258-Linden-Ave-Highland-Park-IL-60035/4906212_zpid/ I'm so happy you recognized the "there is no substitute" for the Porsche! Tom Cruise was about 20 years old during the filming this movie. Rebecca De Mornay was about 22. They dated during filming and for a few years after the movie. De Mornay was also in Backdraft and in another, fairly well-known movie at the time called "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" (1992) which is an entertaining thriller you might want to check out. She is REALLY good in this movie. You might recall Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" that plays in this movie was also famously used in the "Miami Vice" series pilot episode from 1984: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aMCzRj3Syg

Other than Moonlighting and Risky Business, Curtis Armstrong is probably most famous for "Revenge of the Nerds" (1984) and its 1987 sequel. He hasn't acted in any movies recently, but does a LOT of TV.

YES! I remember ‘Booger’ Haahaa!

RegalEagle

I really enjoy the bathroom walls moving effect.. I remember it used elsewhere but can’t remember specifically.. Carolyn nailed it in the reaction that it really adds to the dream atmosphere of the scene!

RegalEagle

‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ is an excellent watch!

Oh wow, the house is in Highland Park! I know where that is.

I've also felt that she was being truthful when she answered with "Yes. No. Maybe." I think she was conflicted. She definitely was part of the scheme to steal from Joel (which is why she was checking the quality of the items in his house). However, I think she liked him and didn't want him to know, which is why she wasn't there when Joel was having to buy the stuff back. So, "Yes. No. Maybe." pretty much sums up how she felt.

I attended the University of Illinois when this movie came out. When it was shown on campus, when Joel announces, "Looks like it's the University of Illinois!", everyone cheered. :-)

U of I is better than Princeton.

Go drive past!

In most states.. the ‘Univ of …’ is the fallback school when you can’t land your dream.. Unfortunatly this is not so at Univ of Illinois.. it is a recognized top-notch school but I think when this line was written.. it was the intent that Univ of Illinois was a typical fallback school..

Yeah, I've seen the sliding wall effect somewhere else too, but don't remember either where it was. But I did find a bit about how that scene was shot in Risky Business: * * * * * "The scene we didn’t quite get done on time was the first in the film — the shower dream scene. We shot it after the wrap party. That was a complicated one. Francine Locke Girl in Joel’s shower dream The shower was built inside the gymnasium along with the other interiors of Joel’s house. In the scene, which is Joel’s dream, the hallway to the shower appears to lengthen as he walks toward it, so he never reaches the shower. But it wasn’t the hallway that was moving; it was a shower that was on wheels, and as Tom Cruise began walking into the bathroom, they pulled the shower back. There was an eight-gallon water heater attached to the shower — and eight gallons didn’t last long. The steam you see was actually mineral oil vapor made with a diffuser. It was not a nice, warm shower. It was cold, and it was awkward. It was an 18-hour shoot. I never thought anybody would even recognize me, because by the end I looked like a drowned rat. On the last take, Tom was like, 'Just go with me on this.' He made sure it would be the last take, because he kept on walking, opened the shower door, and got in, the water flowing all over his letterman jacket. So I can say I actually took a shower with Tom Cruise." https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/12/02/the-making-of-risky-business/
