Guy, remember to turn the lights off!

Love this one. The song will stay with you forever. You guys do banger after banger. I have a lot to catch up on

fire12wife

Shame on me for kissing you with my eyes closed so tight!

This is one of my husband's and my FAVORITE movies! We watch it ALL the time! We're both musicians and we LOVE Tom Hanks! This was Tom's directorial debut! He even wrote the screenplay, and a lot of the music! I'm watching this NOW! Thanks, ladies!!! I'm so excited for this one!!!

fire12wife

The director's cut of this movie is great, too! As far as I know, it's still available on Prime Video, if anyone wants to check it out! If they don't have it, you could just get the DVD that has it. There's just one scene with Tina (Charlize Theron), in the beginning that I'd leave out. The rest I'd keep in the movie!

I knew u guys would really like this one. Its such a good movie that has fell off the radar over the years. Check out Empire Records and Jersey Boys

Minor spoilers: I first saw this movie on a beach retreat weekend with a bunch of friends with whom I played in a cover band. Most of us teared up at the scene where they first hear their music on the radio. The idea of hearing your own song playing on the radio... so emotional and mind blowing! 🥲 You youngsters need to remember that before the advent of YouTube, there was no practical way to self-publish music. Either it was picked up by people with reach — as in this film — or it went nowhere other than your local music venues. This was also the first time I had ever seen Liv Tyler, long before she became forever identified with Arwen Undómiel!

Silver Machine

Great cast. Great music. A perfect summer movie!

Totally Whatever

LOVE to hear that this is his favorite! Pretty incredible for his directorial debut!!

Phil Stubblefield

Primarily bass guitar, although I had a few lead vocals on more "growly" songs like Mustang Sally. It was such a fun period of life! 🎸🎤🎶

fire12wife

All of the music was written specifically for this movie! The guys spent 4 months learning to play these songs, so they wouldn't look like they were faking it! Tom Everett Scott especially, because you really can't fake the drums! lol! That's what my husband plays, is drums. I just love to watch him play! lol!

Phil Stubblefield

My lessons are inexpensive... but you might find the transportation costs prohibitive. 😁

Totally Whatever

They really looked like a band, such talent. You have your own drummer at home !

Loved every comment about the song. It felt like a glowing tribute to the genius of Fountains Of Wayne guitarist/songwriter Adam Schlesinger, who wrote "That Thing You Do." At the time, Fountains of Wayne had only a single album out and were not very famous. But Schlesinger had also written music for theater and wanted to break into movie music as well. And he heard that Tom Hanks had put out a search, looking for a song that sounded like it could be a 1960s hit single, but which also had to be catchy and interesting enough that a movie audience would get tired of hearing it over and over again. Over the years Schlesinger did a bunch of music for TV, for musicals, for movies, had a massive hit single with Fountains of Wayne, and did the music for the TV Series "Crazy Ex Girlfriend". Sadly, he was one of the first celebrity casualties of Covid in 2020, dying back before there was any sort of treatment at all for the disease in Spring of that year.

Okay, now that I've watched your reaction, I'm even happier! Minor spoilers: As I said in my earlier comment, I first watched this with my bandmates, and a bunch of us teared up during the radio reveal at the thought of actually hearing one's own music on the radio! And, Nanette, my sister from another mother, you teared up just like us. 🥲 And once again, Câr gets the Snarky McSnarkerson award for her comment about Charlize Theron's character and her Saturday at the dentist: "She's doing more than getting her crown replaced..." 😉 And didn't Faye look like Audrey Hepburn at the TV showcase? What a wholesome beauty! At the very end, I love that Faye acknowledged what we as the audience had been thinking throughout most of the movie: "We should have done that a long time ago!" I'm glad you looked up a bit more about the music during your outro. It's so cool that they wrote such period-accurate pieces for this film! The chord structure in the title song is pure mid-'60s pop. Take the classic 1, 4, and 5 chords along with the now-standard 6 minor, but then add chromatic touches reminiscent of early Beatles, like a 2 major chord dropping to a minor, and so on. In many places, the changing notes in the chord progression mark out an ascending or descending line, such as the notes E-D-C#-C♮ in the chord progression E - E7 - A - Am. It's just so mega cool if you're a music nerd! 🤓 Okay, back to the film... The fact that Jimmy was a jerk to Faye was obviously necessary for the drama, but other than that, this film is such a celebration of music and friendship! I'm glad you both caught the joyous spirit of people just being happy when their friends and family succeed! 😁

Just a little trivia... the band's first manager (Phil Horace), was played by Chris Ellis, who also played the flight director (Clark) in the movie Armageddon, that also stars Liv Tyler, just two years after this movie! The actress that played the lead role, Anita, in the fake movie 'Weekend at Party Pier' shoot scene, was Tracy Reiner. She is the daughter of Penny Marshall and Rob Reiner. She was also in the movie A League of Their Own (1992) with Tom Hanks just four years prior. She played Betty Spaghetti, who lost her husband George in the war. The host of the Hollywood Television Showcase was played by Peter Scolari. He costarred with Tom Hanks in the tv show Bosom Buddies, that aired for two seasons from 1980 - 1982! They play two guys that have to dress as women to be able to live in an affordable women's only apartment building! It's comedy gold!!!

Totally Whatever

That was Tracy Reiner! We need to do a re-watch of A League of Their Own - it's one of our favorites but we haven't seen it in a long time.

Totally Whatever

You couldn't get a more perfect song for this movie! It's so catchy and you really don't mind hearing it over and over.

fire12wife

It's in my top 10 of all-time! The fact that it's based on the real women of baseball makes it even better! Would love a rewatch... maybe near the end of the baseball season, during the World Series in October?!?!

fire12wife

I've tried to get him to play his drums while he's wearing his firefighter gear... even just his hitches, but so far he hasn't done it for me... that would be so hot! lol!!!

Jason Pratt

Very easy movie for me tO love. No real antagonists, but Jimmy was still a butthead. Steve Zahn was my favorite. Ethan Embry is great too- this movie didn’t take its self too seriously, his character’s credited name, TB Player. The Bass Player. Hanks didn’t even give him a full name. 🤣
