Ik ik, very short chapter! But hey, it's the second Antagonist!

I'm... considering having a third? But I'm not too sure. I think these two, for now, work well as a pair. One from above, the other from below. One wanting to help, the other... is a dickbag. Good contrast. I do feel like there's more going on though, that the Breach isn't just caused by these two. But oh well!

Interlude - An Extraordinary Man

He stretched with a yawn then scanned the room in an instant.

Every molecule of water within fifty yards froze in place, just for a fraction of a second, and in doing so, he created a map of his luxurious suite, of the sculptures he’d brought with him from Fortress NW and the multiple aquariums strewn across the room.

They’d thought him fond of fish, for some reason. It was stupid, but he supposed that it was better than having the room decorated in a blood-theme of some sort.

“Mmm?” the woman next to him asked. She shifted, looking up to him with bedroom eyes, the silken sheets sliding back to reveal an expanse of smooth skin. “Are you waking up already?” she asked. “We could continue where we left off.”

“Get out,” he said.

She blinked. “What?”

“Don’t make me repeat myself. Out,” he said.

When she didn’t move right away, he picked her up and stood her on her feet. Not touching her with his body, but moving the blood in her extremities so that she was repositioned. It wasn’t a spell... not quite. More like a dozen lesser ones, all ingrained and carved in his soul to the point where they were second nature to him.

She hissed, but she could take it. They’d sent a C-ranker to warm his bed, not some shrinking normie off the street. She’d survive the rough handling.

“Fine,” she snapped, a bit of fire lighting in her eyes, but he didn’t care. She started to pick up her clothes, but his glare had her pausing before she ran out, clutching a few of her things to her ample chest.

He stared at her ass as she ran off, then groaned and sat up. His body was thin and light and lithe. He’d chosen this, to be someone unnaturally skinny, pale to the point that one might wonder if he was bloodless. Handsome, though. At least according to anyone he’d overheard so far.

Standing up, unafraid of his nakedness, he ambled over to one of the windows overlooking Fortress ENE. There was a garden out here, filled with violets in bloom. They typically grew in spring, not this late in the summer. Or was it fall by now?

No matter. Some lowly D-ranker would come around to keep them fresh and healthy. They were part of the image, weren’t they?

The Bloody Violet. He liked it when they added the ‘The’ at the start. Made him feel more like a superhero or something.

But who actually knew him? He was looking down at a city of a million or more, and did they care? There were maybe a few dozen A-rankers like himself here. He was a rare breed, one of the elite among the elite. The offers had started coming in the moment he stepped food here, and he was grateful for them.

If there was one thing he’d never admit to anyone, it was that the fear that fed him came from knowing that one day his name would be erased from history.

But that didn’t have to happen, did it?

He stretched his back until it popped, then turned and started looking for something to wear that was appropriate.

All the while, his mind churned.

How would he leave his mark? Not a bad one. No, he didn’t want them to thing he was some sort of freak, a terrorist, a monster. Those didn’t get the praise he wanted.

So. A hero.

Well... heroes needed to save, people, didn’t they? They needed to be seen doing it too.

Hmm.. yeah, he could try a few things, work on his image a little more. Maybe look into some PR firm or something.

Fortress ENE was a good place to be, being the shithole that it was. So few A-rankers meant a lot more opportunity, and a much greater chance that things would go wrong.

He’d make his mark. One way or another. And it didn’t have to be today. He could exercise a little patience.

Orchamus

If he is not involved in the breach I would be very surprised after that.

MightyMouse

Bros gonna do the fireman thing isn’t he? Engineer a reason to be a hero, or standby in the face of a disaster to save them at the last minute

Inv7ctus

Oh dear. Hello Syndrom, please don't unleash Omnidroids on the city.

TheHornedOne

If he’s directly involved in the breach Deadline will have to go a lot farther than C grade to stop him it seems, given how he treated the C grade in this chapter

GryphonKnight

In my experience, the bigger the fuck up, the more people involved I think multiple people trying to be greedy, and multiple people trying to help, would lead to maximum chaos Dominoes Pizza famously turned to crap when each ingredient procurer say “if I cheap out, my department will look good but no one will notice because the other ingredients are still quality “ but since they all did it, you ended up with crap pizza Of course the solution was to consolidate all the procurers under a single boss that balanced cheap, but flavor neutral, ingredients with more expensive, but high flavor density, ingredients

HikinBear

he stepped food here → he stepped foot here them to thing he was → them to think he was

Wtcher

Oooo. That guy. Big power and big insecurity.

Hector Gregorio

So the breach probably wasn't an organized plan, but a bunch of idiots with idiotic plans that exploded simultaneously.

TroubleFait

Between this guy and Louise, are all high rankers detestable in bed? "Use them and throw them away" kind of people.

TroubleFait

Yuck. Good ingredients aren't only about taste, they're about nutrition. But I wouldn't expect Dominoes Pizza to care about that.

TeaGeek

Eeeh, not necessarily. A lot of highly nutrient-dense foods are really bad and good spices are negligible in terms of nutritional impact. Also, flavor density has very little overlap with flavor quality - they are about covering up off flavors or making up for bland things they are added to.

Tierhon

Odds are he is the reason they gave the orders to take defensive positions rather than close the portals as teams became available. Not responsible for the initial breach but taking advantage of the situation to make himself look better.

MightyMouse

Not actively malicious but definitely apathetic

Palmer

No, he didn’t want them to “thing” he was some sort of freak. Thing -> Think the moment he stepped food here. Food -> Foot

ScarletIce

I kind of like the idea that this douchebag is just an opportunistic fuckup. Like, he doesn't stoop to actually creating problems so that he can solve them, but he absolutely does wait for them to get worse so that he looks better when he swoops in to save the day. I can see him being presented with an opportunity to prevent the breach and choosing to let it happen because it's a good opportunity for him to play the hero.

Ledabot

This guys hero name should be Ozymandias the way he's scared of fading away

Littlesavage

Nipple twisty thought! What if that random C-ranker was Louise?? Obviously the company isn't Luna Corp, however, it could be a parent company or bigger affiliate that didn't want to lose any of their own C-rankers' time so had little Luna Corp send one of theirs instead! This could lead into why Louise randomly tapped our little Elise in the original timeline. Got real frustrated one day & was like fuck it. If he can do it, then I can do it. Cuz unhealed peeps tend to repeat what was done to them. Then Louise either starts to like her, or feels bad at some level, or just doesn't want to have to train another lover to her standards so keeps Elise around. Just a thought.
