"Yndral is like an ocean, but one you can breathe in. When you're down there, your memories, they sort of…detach. You walk through them like a ghost, haunting your own past."

-Serax, Fated Mates, Night IV

Night IV of Fated Mates is complete. It has some echoes of the old Heretic route and is more Serax-heavy than I anticipated based on the original draft. I like seeing a different side to him than in Classic and Dark Maiden, but at the same time it has me grinding my teeth a bit because I hate seeing him on the outside looking in. The beginning of all the narrative branches tend to be pretty Valdricht-oriented, but as the story progresses it actually tilts a bit more toward Serax, especially if you’re leaning in his direction.

As much as I love Fated Mates as a trope and generally enjoy/prefer monogamy stories, unstitching the MC from Serax and seeing him develop both divorced from a bond with Valdricht and our MC hurts. I suspect I’m going to breeze through the next couple of Classic/DM updates and if that is the case I’ll have to sit down and reevaluate certain aspects of Fated Mates to figure out why it’s been such a creative bottleneck.

In the meantime, I have a solution that will help with more content and solve an issue with another story route. More on that in the next post.

I have to say as devastating as Serax not being part of the relationship in the fated mates version is because I love him so much it’s been really fun and interesting to play through this route. I find me making my mcs much gentler and sweeter with Serax and when romancing Valdricht alone I like playing her more cynical and distrustful. It’s so fun getting to explore different aspects of the mc’s personality and how the men react to different versions of her. As always I can’t say enough nice things about the plot, characters, and your writing style. Every time you update I’m overjoyed!!!

I had to wait for a good time to play the update, but am excited to finally play. There is def something sad about Serax being on the outside- even if he makes it so much worse with some choices he's making. Serax is much less subtle about not being a good, or nice person than Valdricht (made worse by MC being a bit of an unreliable narrator and she has a Valdricht bias). I almost wouldn't be surprised if he became an antagonist or villain in Fated Mates, as removed as he is in another story. In the other routes he has complicated feelings about MC, but there is a connection between him and Valdricht that is lost here. It's almost jarring how quickly it seems Valdricht dropped him- like in other routes he is def the boss and stern with Serax but there is something soft too. Valdricht, if nothing else, is quite done with his jealousy it seems. Also, as much as I adore making Valdricht wait and marry the MC (is me being petty), the non marriage route def feels more fulfilling to me. This route seems to have a lot more weight to it and leads to a lot more character moments. Plus I like the forest god and am happy to get a peak at him showing up. It'll probably be my go to for Fated Mates going forward.
