The 2026 Halloween Spooktakular begins! This season, we’re envisioning each gal as special creature or monster that fits their unique personality. First up: Nabiki!

Nabiki’s greed knows no bounds. And of all the creatures in conception, there is only one who can match her lust for wealth: the dragon! 🐉

Variants Include: Text & Clean Editions. Plus we’ve included the original art set that inspired this one as a bonus: “The Scales of Greed” (2019)!

When revisiting the Dragon Nabiki concept, there were two goals:

Better looking Nabiki Dragon design AND Treasure Hoard.

Better interaction between Dragon Nabiki and her treasure.

Depicting Nabiki scooping up those coins and showering them across her chest was a deliciously decadent way to do both! 😈

Until next time patrons, look for the next Halloween Spooktakular post October 22nd where Kumicho Kuno attempts to ensnare us in her web!

I... I hate to be that guy, but some of the coins look odd, especially the ones she's interacting with. Are those AI generated?

Hinoron

That IS quite an upgrade! I'd say we hit our objectives there!

Given this site was founded originally with a mandate to ensure artists are fairly paid for their work... The staff have been extremely hesitant to use AI at all. I might believe the coins were produced with some AI assistance, but I don't think the character art ever will be.

Well, no question Nabiki is real art, but that is what makes the treasure so striking. Look at the coins surrounding Nabiki's left hand (on our right). It looks like they're forming a vortex around the hand.

Interestingly, the first version of this did NOT have the coin swirl. It was just Nabiki's hand popping out of the coins, resting within the gold pile. And that made Nabiki's hand seem detached. So SHADE added the coin swirl later so that it looked like her hand was moving and was attached to her wrist under there. I do wonder if we made the motion of those coins too aggressive, but compared to what we had before I believe it's better than the disembodied hand appearance. Perhaps we could have found a better balance. Apologies if it distracted anyone. -Deep Star UPDATE. Here is a link to a preview of the old floating hand so that readers can see why SHADE decided to change it: https://ranmabooks.com/3Dtemp/Dragon's_Tail-Rejected_Hand.png

Glad you felt this way, Hino. These pages are frightening amounts of work and detail, but we hope ultimately readers are enjoying it. While we are using new tools and software with neural networks for transformation effects, like the coin swirl that you observed, human artists are making this and we aren't going to put out any generative slop. -Deep Star

I can't help but wonder if any are so brave and bold to face this dragon to become her $layer. That's not a dollar sign. That's me striking out an S to leave the true future title desired by the (soon to be) poor shmuck that goes against her.

Hawkx1

Any chance you could upload the original one so that we could compare the original to the updated one?

Hawkx1, you might have missed this as it got buried in the comments, but I did share the original Nabiki hand. Here is a link to a preview of the old floating hand so that readers can see why SHADE decided to change it: https://ranmabooks.com/3Dtemp/Dragon's_Tail-Rejected_Hand.png This art was shared so readers could see why we made the revision. As for releasing full alternate versions, this is the final version SHADE prefers. Going back to an older, incomplete version and preparing that for release would siphon away vital time from upcoming Halloween content (5 more pages are planned). Our efforts are better spent there, especially because the schedule is grueling and diverting attention now could result in delays. Thanks for your understanding. Hope the art shared above helps with your curiosity.

I know I don't speak for everyone, but like reusing assets like existing backgrounds, using AI to rapidly produce elements to augment an artwork is quite acceptable to me, so long as it does not distract from the art itself. As used here, I have no issue, as the focus is on the girl, not the gold. Then again, I grew up in the early days of CGI, and remember some extremely cringeworthy attempts at combining it with traditional artwork, so my standard is "does it distract from the art?" So long as the artists are well compensated for their work, and the window dressing is tasteful, it's origins matter less to me then the artwork itself. Keep up the good work.

Appreciate your open mindedness, Jacen! And your standard is absolutely fair and what we strive for. Really since the very beginning of our work over 20 years ago, the rule was in place. Our artists make the character art, that is what we're selling. Backgrounds though are however is practical. Over the lifetime of our work, I've used everything, custom built 3D models, borrowed and repurposed backgrounds, gamecaps, anything that I felt filled out the world but didn't take forever to make. Over all these years I'd say no more than 5% of our background art is completely hand drawn and hand colored. That's simply cause it takes 10 times longer to do a detailed background as the character art. We'd rather spend that time and energy making more character art. New tools have created new options for more anime style backgrounds that better fit the 2D aesthetic of the character art. The 3D environments were good as far as they went, and they're still there underpinning the conversions to provide a base of consistency, but if I can make the environments better and thus support the character art better, I will. It's all about the characters. :D --SHADE

RHB artists are still working on each project and being paid. When we do use new computer tools to augment work, we do so with their blessing. A lot of the tools out there now use AI in some way, whether it's for special effects, animation augmentation, or even lighting. Our position is that we're not replacing humans and we'll use these new tools when it helps the presentation of the art. Patrons know we won't put out Generative AI slop. Most people hate that- including us- so that's the line that we will not cross and we hope patrons keep it in mind moving forward. -Deep Star

That's the important thing. I was just wondering because AI has a very... Distinct look, and it kinda threw me off. Can't distract from Nabs, after all...
