THIS is the episode that defines this series. The animation is some of the best I've ever seen for both anime AND cartoons. The fight between Azula and Zuko in particular is jaw droppingly beautiful. And as far as Azula's character arc is concerned it's perfect. Her whole life she lied and manipulated, she used people like tools and abused them. And the thing about people like that is they often think everyone else is just like them. So her paranoia consumes her, it's like she sees herself in everyone around her and imagines them plotting against her.

I was shocked to see Azula's state at the end, how she lost it, I didn't expect that to happen to her at all. it's a sad ending for her.

I pity Azula to be honest, especially when you think about how she was only a 14-year-old girl who was groomed by a warmonger and a psychopath. Zuko was given all the chances in the world to redeem himself, while Azula was like a bird trapped in the cage that Ozai built for her. She never had anyone who truly supported her. Her “friends” only stuck around because they were afraid of her. Her mother focused more on Zuko, and Ozai only paid attention to Azula because she was a prodigy. She never experienced real love. Even her own father, the person she looked up to the most, saw her as nothing more than a tool for conquest. The good thing is her story doesn’t end there. The writers intend to give her a bit of a redemption arc in the comics. She’s most probably never going to become a typical “good guy,” but more of an anti-heroine who does her own thing without being a full-on villain. I just hope they don’t write it in a way that feels forced. I’d love to see her travel the world and work through her issues on her own, just like Zuko did, but without needing someone like Iroh to guide her.
