Neah

the make-up powder is probably Venetian ceruse or know as Venetian white, it was used as a skin whitener since white skin was seen as a trait for nobles, because they did not have to work outside and did not get a tan. One of the components was white lead which was used because it had the best whitening effect but it also is poisonous which took a good while until someone figured it out, but even then some people still used it

I assume they didn't tell anyone why the makeup was banned? If they told that lady-in-waiting it's poisonous I'm very surprised she didn't get beheaded for attempted murder

SprinkleVerse

That’s true! I think if they actually explained why it was banned, she wouldn’t have done it. It doesn’t seem like people in that era really spread information or educated others, they just expected everyone to follow the rules without question.

When I first watched AD I thought the first three episodes were kinda good. But this episode and the scene of Maomao's anger in 07:50 - 10:00 in particular is what really got me hooked into this show. Great stuff.

OnePieceMan

I'm pretty sure they did tell it. Even the lower ranked people were aware of it being poison. I think the problem stems from her ladies in waiting just not taking it seriously because they were so high up with their heads in the sky they didn't see the tragedy unfolding right in front of them that their own actions caused.
