Fun fact the 4th season was just announced to start airing April of next year

Oh man! That fight was my favorite in this arc and I love how they animated it! They actually hired Vincent Chansard, the animator behind some of the best fight scenes in One Piece, to direct that sequence! Although it was stunning, the fast pace often leaves people confused as to what actually happened, so I'll try to explain it the best I can. So the glowing effect around Garfiel's legs is his Divine Protection of Earth Spirits. It was mentioned back in season 2 and it allows him to use earth magic, as well as regenerates his stamina and heals him as long as his feet are touching the ground. In this fight, he uses it to summon stone pillars, obstructing Kurgan's vision, which lets him take out his eye, but in return he gets slashed in the abdomen. Then there's some more skirmishing with that cool fish eye lense effect, and then the final sequence. Garfiel knows that Kurgan won't lose in a battle of endurance, so he bets everything on one attack. First, he summons the pillars to occupy four of Kurgan's arms and charges at him. There are four arms left, holding the Devil Cleavers. Garfiel parries one of them with his arm, breaking his bones, then he sacrifices his other arm to stop the next one. Garfiel jumps into the air to avoid the third and as Kurgan is about to strike him with the last one, he can't move it. That's because it's the arm that Garfiel damaged back in the sewers. Since Kurgan is dead and doesn't feel pain, he hadn't noticed the wound before and now, it was in his blind spot, since Garfiel destroyed his eye. Garfiel then bounces off the ceiling and bites into Kurgan's neck, finishing him off. In the light novel ilustration, that neck wound was much bigger, so in the anime, a lot of people miss it. Now, for some more background info about Kurgan - After proving his strength to the Vollachian Empire, he became one of the best ranked warriors there. About ten years ago, the city of Garkla was attacked by none other than our proffesional victim, Regulus Corneas. He was ordered by the gospel to destroy the city, because some witches' remainse were kept there. Kurgan didn't really stand a chance, since Regulus' power is just that broken, but he did manage to buy enough time for the Emperor and a lot of the citizens to evacuate. In the end though, he did die in shame, having not been given a proper fight. And that's probably why he was behaving so strangely. He killed the demibeasts so they wouldn't interrupt them, he waited for Garfiel to stand up when he passed out, he blocked the water current to stop the shelter from flooding and finally, he acknowledged Garfiel, pulling out all of his swords. Even though he's controled by the cult, kurgan retained a lot of his personality even as a corpse soldier. And Garfiel gave him the proper, honorable fight that he deserved. As for Garfiel, I imagine it's only up from here. He faced his fears, parted with his trauma and protected the people he cared about. Not to mention, one of the legendary warriors he read about as a child called him "magnificent". With all the setup in the first half of the season, it was incredibly satisfying to see his comeback. He also got so much love from the production team - the best animated fight in the series thus far and the most iconic battle OST in Re:Zero, Takt of Heroes, which usually plays when Reinhard is involved. With Garfiel being my favorite side character, I couldn't possibly be happier. I should probably talk some more about Al, but... I can't really say much besides the fact that he's ultra suspicious. Even Capella suspects him of being responsible for the two main mysteries we've had since episode 5, he's way too nonchalant in this fight and the way he fights seems... off. Like, he dodges attacks that come from behind him without turning his head to see them...

I think you're right that Garfiel probably was having problems adapting to the fact that he ended someones life. There's probably more to why he's getting Elsa PTSD but that's a part of it I imagine. He even hesitated to kill the mabeasts that Lust had made just because they were human. Until, to protect his step-siblings in the shelter. He finally understood that he needs to kill to protect what he loves. Or so I believe. When it comes to the Kurgan fight, I like that he got recognized by Kurgan as someone worthy of using all his weapons against him. He definitely deserved it. I first didn't really understand all of what happened during the fight if I'm really being honest. I had to watch the fight like 5-6 times before I really understood what happened. As cool as some of the x-ray shots and the tiger impact frame and overall animation was, I actually think it took away from the fight by having too much movement and weird camera angles/shots. It looked visually amazing but also personally, it was a bit confusing. I don't think Re:Zero is an anime that's meant for this kind of animation, what we had in previous seasons and episodes was perfectly fine. To top all of it off, I think they didn't really do justice to Kurgan getting defeated. It just looks like he got defeated because of the cut on one of his left arms and the bite to the neck. Sure, the neck has a lot of important veins and stuff, but I think the amount of wounds they should've made Kurgan have, should've been way more and the bite in the neck should've been way bigger. I just think that someone of such a legendary status as Kurgan should be able to tank more than the scrapes and bites we see. That's just my opinion though. Again, no hate towards the animators or whoever worked on the episode, but I just don't think it was portrayed well.

Damn, now I feel even more disappointed in the portrayal of the Kurgan fight, it definitely looked nice though, especially the tiger impact frames and the x-ray shots. Also that's some cool Kurgan backstory, I had no idea that happened.

As a novel reader, I'm biased, since I didn't have trouble understanding the fight choreography, but personally, I love how they animated the fight. Sure, it was fast-paced and chaotic, but I think that's honestly a good thing. It makes it feel more natural and realistic. There's no overused slow motion, no puses mid-fight... And it fits Garfiel's style well. My only complaint is they should have made the neck wound more visible, because a lot of people miss it and don't understand how Garfiel even won.

Tarvo27

Yeah, that's fair. I definitely had to rewatch the fight multiple times to understand more or less everything that happened.
