We haven't seen it before but we see Petelguse, Regulus and Satella at the start here. This is what is called "the shadow garden". We should've seen this in the anime before a few times, but they didn't probably expect to make so much of the anime, so they cut it. It's basically a place where Subaru's consciousness goes to from time to time. Here's two previous times when we should've seen the shadow garden: After Subaru jumped off the cliff to save Rem in season 1, he went to the shadow garden instead of instantly returning by death. There he sees someone and they say "I cannot meet you. Not yet." and that's it. The second time is when he was taken over by Petelguse and had to have Julius and Felix kill him near the end of season 1. This time he heard someone say "I love you". There was a bit more stuff after, but I just wanted to bring out some of the cut content regarding this shadow garden. I'm not a 100% sure if some other scenes we've seen before are also taking place in shadow garden or not, but the scene where we see Petelguse inside Subaru's body be kicked out by Satella or the scene where the dragon's blood curse is fighting the dog mabeast curses inside his body do come to mind, since they look like they take place in a similar space. Regardless, it's clear there's a reason why Petelguse and Regulus were there. Subaru did suddenly aquire Petelguse's Unseen Hand after defeating him, so maybe he did also get something from Regulus? Throughout the entire episode I was thinking of how Shaula is a lot like Subaru and she does have the Subaru orange/black color palette from his old clothes. As you said after the episode, her mannerisms about how she speaks, especially some actual English she uses (things like "no problem", to which Subaru even asked her where she learned it from), the kinda chuuni name for her attack (Hell Snipe, not to mention her imitating a gun and blowing away the smoke) and her hair being called a scorpion tail (in English mind you), things like her imitating a drum roll and so on and so on, it's all a lot of things like this you wouldn't really expect to see in this world and it might actually be something that someone who was from our modern world that taught all these things to her. Now about the sage part. I remember seeing something about cut content on social media, where Anastasia (Echidna) discusses it with Subaru for a moment, implying that (based on everything so far) Flügel is intended to be the Sage but for whatever reason someone is trying to "pin the achievements" of Flügel unto Shaula instead. This is further confirmed by the fact that Liliana sings songs about Flügel and not Shaula that have been passed down from bard to bard. During her flashback she even mentioned Reid and Flügel being heroes. Just as a reminder, other than Liliana mentioning Flügel, we have seen Petelguse refer to Flügel as his master as well, right before absorbing the Sloth Witch Factor (which is interesting as it implies that he gave that to him, which would make Subaru "collecting" them understandable, if that's what's going on) and there's also the tree that was used to crush the White Whale. Now, I didn't know this one, as I never noticed the small detail, but apparently Flügel did actually carve "Flügel was here" into the tree in Japanese, so that confirms that at the very least he was someone that was transported to this world. There definitely is some connection somewhere between Flügel having access to Witch Factors, the star related names all the archbishops have (Petelguse, Capella, Regulus), the Pleiades tower also being named after a cluster of stars (Subaru being the japanese name for it), Shaula and the meaning of her name and the test also being related to stars, but how are they all connected still seems like a mystery. Also, based on everything Subaru said about the test, I don't think I would be able to even complete. I look at the monoliths and I find it very hard to see them as constellations. It's very impressive Subaru managed to do that though. I guess maybe Japanese people learn about the stars and constellations in school? If we think of Subaru as Flügel, what if the first time we see him getting transported to the Re:Zero world isn't actually his first time and he somehow just lost memory of being transported and what he did as Flügel? There is a lot we don't know yet, but also time travel could be an answer to how Subaru could be Flügel too, like for example, in the future from now he takes on the name Flügel and travels back in time before he came to that world to set up everything? I guess we're just going to have to find out.

shadow garden?? I thought it was a dream, wow that's interesting 😳 Thank you again for sharing all this! it gives me a deeper understanding of what's happening.! I'm having fun reading all this hahaha 😂 💖🤗 wow yes that last bit you mentioned about Subaru and Flügel I did think what if it's really Subaru, but also what if it's just an ancestor but that doesn't make sense since Shaula speaks like modern Japanese people. so it just might be really Subaru 😱 she did say he smells like him.

I think the smell thing was supposed to reference the fact that Subaru gave off the miasma that Rem and a lot of other characters noticed about him previously. If that's so, then wouldn't it mean that Flügel also had something to do with Satella and her powers, as the miasma on Subaru is because of the Return by Death ability.

Let's go! Re:Zero is back! I've missed your reactions so much! I can't wait for you to catch up! This arc is widely considered as the best arc of Re:Zero. The amount of heavy lore and insane character development rivals that of season 2. Not to mention, with our remote location, a party that's pretty lacking in combat skill and complete lack of knowledge of what to expect, we are getting the taste of the same uncertain, suffocating feeling of seaons 1 and 2. At least, after episode 3, we were given a moment to breathe, which, in Re:Zero's fashion means a ton of confusing info and hundreds of new questions usually referring to Satella and whatever happenned 400 years ago. The stars also begin to play a bigger role in the story as we go on. I mean, the Pleiades Watchtower is literally named after Subaru (Subaru meaning Pleiades in Japanese). 7 more episodes to go. The 2nd cour is coming in just a few days! Now, as for the lore, theories and stuff, we know so little about Flugel that we can only make assumptions. We know he's definitely from Earth. We know he lived 400 years ago and, along with Sword Saint Reid Astrea and the Divine Dragon Volcanica, he sealed the WItch of Envy. We know from Emilia's backstory that he entrusted Betelguese with Sloth witch factor. And we know he planted the tree which very conveniently proved crucial in beating the White Whale. There are some theories about Flugel and Subaru being the same person with wiped memories, but it's all pretty vague. What I personally find interesting is that, we know from season 2 that Satella used to be a normal girl, but the Envy witch factor corrupted her and caused a split personality. From some crumbs of information, we know that 400 years ago, Satella, Flugel, Reid, and some other people like Echidna and, entioned in season 3, Hoshin of The WIlderness, seemed to know each other well. In the latest ED there is even a shot of several silhouettes standing in front of the Watchtower, and two of them look like Subaru and Emilia, which would probbably mean they're Flugel and Satella. I think the reason Satella loves Subaru so much, and gave him the return by death is, because she was in love with Flugel before she became a witch.

wow wow wow !!! you just opened my eyes to more possibilities 😱 people always thought Emilia was Satella or had something to do with her because of her looks. and whenever Satella comes up and talks to Subaru saying I love you, like during the trial in season 2 and in the shadow garden in this season, she sounds like Emilia!!

Just like there are theories about Flügel being Subaru, there are also theories about Satella being Emilia, so they just time traveled together maybe? So many questions, not enough answers 😂
