The "This bastard is trying to cover up my death" line is actually Subaru talking from Meili's perspective. He read too much of her book and her memories mixed with his, creating a split personality. The Meili hallucinations aren't just his guilty conscience, it's her memories talking to him. It doesn't work with translation, but right after waking up from the book, when he was babbling in fear, he was using female pronouns. His rain was confused over who he was.

Also, there is actually a story about what would happen if Subaru started killing everyone and reading their books. It's one of the What If stories written by the author. In this one, Subaru kills everyone except Shaula, reads their books and goes completely insane, trying to figure out who was "Natsuki Subaru" before he lost his memories through the way others remembered him. So after that, he left the tower along with Shaula and went on a killing spree, taking out everyone who knew "Natsuki Subaru" (Grafiel, Otto, other royal candidates etc.) in order to return to the archive and read their books.

At the start when he mentions that what if the real Subaru came back while he was uncounsious. He meant that, what if the Subaru that was in this world before he lost his memories came back when he lost his memories. Sort of like a split personality thing, where the amnesia Subaru is just another personality, making him doubt his sense of self. Right off the bat, not knowing about the real Subaru's habits, this version of Subaru messes up in the conversation with Emilia. Ever since he started this loop, we never saw him call Emilia with "chan" added to it. Since they don't know he lost his memories (it's still the same loop where he decided not to tell them), the first time he calls her Emilia-chan at the start of the conversation, it noticeably makes her worried for Subaru and asks if it was a prank, as Subaru normally wouldn't call her "chan". So she clearly knows something is up. Also the fact that Subaru here calls it idiotic when Emilia explains how she wants to help Meili enough to the point where she would at the very least have some freedom, I really didn't expect it. I was hoping he would understand based on the fact that Emilia just told him that they made it across the desert thanks to her. Although, he probably got angry because Meili is now dead, not because she doesn't actually deserve a pardon. To be fair, I was expecting Emilia and Subaru to talk it out, but it seems that there is a new book in the library. I was worried that someone other than Subaru would read it, but luckily for Subaru, that didn't happen as far as we know. I didn't expect to see her backstory, but I'm glad they showed it. I was wondering what happened between her and Elsa and how they came to be together. Seeing Meili bite and fight Elsa but Elsa just accepting her to be how she is and not paying attention to her wounds (her being a vampire and all) was kind of cute and wholesome in it's own way. Apparently, Elsa worked under Lust. Capella here mentions the role of "Mother" and we can probably connect it back to what Meili said at the start of the season about being scared to meet Mother again. I guess we can see why she would be so afraid to, having been turned into a frog and whatnot. The one that was standing next to her was probably Frederica, wearing some cloth around her because of her clothes being destroyed in the transformation. But we find out that Meili didn't want to die. I'm not quite sure what she wanted to find an answer to, but it clearly was in the books of the dead. Perhaps she was looking for Elsa's book? And then we see Subaru talking in a totally different tone and in a different way. This seemingly happened around the time Subaru lost his memory in this timeline. I think when he bumped into Meili in the library, it was before he lost his memory (although his hair would suggest otherwise) and then when Meili comes back, he already had lost his memory somehow I'm guessing. At first I wasn't sure what he was talking about as it all sounded pretty vague, but what gave it away for me was that he mentioned "savoring" (in your translation "flavor") and the sniff he did towards Meili. Then the way he was speaking clicked and it's kind of obvious now that this was Gluttony. Which one, not quite sure, but since one of them was defeated, it wouldn't be too impossible for Subaru to have read the book for Lye Batenkaitos, but since he was the one that ate Rem's memories, shouldn't Rem's memories be back now? On top of all that, current Subaru doesn't know Gluttony. He can't connect the dots that the one who killed Meili wasn't any version of Subaru, so he blames himself and I think this leads to the best part about this whole episode. After coming out of the book, he starts referring to himself with feminine words at times. If I'm not mistaken, "atashi" (casual) is a feminine word that references yourself. So when he said "I was" he was saying it as if he was a woman, so Meili, otherwise he'd use the word "boku" (a bit more formal) or "ore" (casual) in reference to himself. At first I thought he used "watashi" which is a way of referencing oneself regardless of gender in mostly casual settings. Beatrice mentions that Subaru and Meili have blended together, which would make sense based on the way he was talking. Now the question is, what if Subaru read a book about Lye Batenkaitos and blended together with him? For a moment we see everyone searching for Meili, and once it cuts to Ram looking at Rem, she is shocked like she noticed something. I wonder what that's about? Could it be that "Rem" that killed Subaru before? Not to mention how Shaula was acting. Did she know? I feel like she knows. It's also pretty obvious what Meili and Subaru were thinking about. If everyone dies, he can read their books and understand why everyone respects him so much. Quite possibly, he'll recover most of his memories too, although from the point of view of other people. This actually happens in an IF story. It's called Tsugihagi, which roughly translates to patchwork. I highly recommend reading or watching a video about it. It's safe to do so after finishing this half of the season. When Beatrice said that Subaru has been cutting his hand again, I heard that apparently that was in reference to Subaru having extremely bad nightmares to the point of where he would hurt himself so he couldn't sleep properly if she wasn't around. This would mean that she didn't actually see the letters carved into his arm. I also kind of dislike the subs at times. At the table Subaru didn't say Foxidna (Eridna in Japanese) but he said Echidna. Foxidna is a name old Subaru used for her. And finally, Meili's body is gone. Was it Shaula that hid it or did Ram find out about it somehow? Could she have read the book? I wouldn't put it past her. I hate to say it, but to me, this is the best episode of the season just because of Meili appearing around Subaru and how horrific she looks and how she acts. It's just so perfect.

ohhhh!!! wow omg thank you for clarifying that!! I thought Subaru thought there is another Subaru who is hiding his ability to die or something! it did seem off to me but I assumed that's what he meant 😱 Thank you so much for clarifying that part! it makes so much sense now 😮 OMG!!! That is a horror story 😭😭 it's really interesting! I've never watched any anime like Re:Zero before with this level of detail of events and lots of possibilities, and it's amazing that the author is sharing those too even if they didn't get animated. Thank you for sharing that! even though it's scary 😂😭

OMG!!! Gluttony's book?????? 😱😱 I think I'm going to have trouble sleeping tonight THIS IS SO SCARY!! 😂😭 OMG!!! I remember Ram being shocked but I didn't think much of it 😱 so was it Rem all along!!!??? This part is completely not understandable from the translation about the pronouns, that's why I thought Subaru was possessed!!! so it's just that his mind is getting mixed up with the people he is reading 😱 thanks for clarifying that!
