Maki was always meant to be like toji in terms of power but because she was a twin she was technically in violation of her heavenly pact as Jujitsu itself viewed them as one person because of her sister she contained a small bit of cursed energy her sister took it with her fulfilling the pact I also find it genuinely interesting how the blonde guy admired toji his wording of calling maki an imposter not saying she was trash like him or something along those lines and the reason she asked why did you call me back to her mum is her mum was trying to stop making getting killed by her dad but unfortunately the mum herself is broken by the treatment from the clan so her attempt is very minimal

I once saw something online that I was pretty clueless about when watching the episode for the first time myself. Mai giving Maki a reed stalk in the dream (or whatever you want to call it) was apparently symbolism for being ready for the future. I've seen a few explanations what the use for the reed is but basically the saying is in japanese "A goose holding a reed between it's mouth" and when literally translated to english it means well prepared (for the future). It's referencing how migratory birds (geese in this case) bring a reed stalk with them when migrating on a long journey over the sea. They use the reed when they need to rest, thus being prepared for the long journey ahead. So Mai giving Maki the reed (sword and freeing Maki from the "curse" of the twins) was making Maki be ready for the future. Mai's technique was to create objects from Cursed Energy. She used this to create a bullet per day, as was explained in season 1. She made the sword that Maki ended up holding. I guess Japan used to see twins as a bad sign on something, that it appears in media quite often (Rem and Ram are very similar to Maki and Mai). Since twins are seen as one person in the Jujutsu world, like Rem and Ram splitting the two horns a demon should have, they shared their abilities. Maki was supposed to be born like Toji, but since they were twins, Mai was born with some cursed energy and so Maki also ended up with some (not completely zero like Toji did). Mai died and took the cursed energy and the technique with her and so, Maki is free from the curse of the twins and fully unlocked her abilities and is now equal to Toji, she now has 0 cursed energy. The scene in the big hall where Maki defeats all the guys with the swords is inspired by (and a reference to) the movie Kill Bill. I loved the movie a lot. I hope you get to see it someday if you haven't. Speaking of references, I believe the massive amount of punches the guy threw at Maki (22:08), was a reference to My Hero Academia Season 4, the fight Deku had against Overhaul when Eri was on his back. I think I previously said this already, but JJK has A LOT of references to movies and anime. "Any woman who can't walk humbly behind her man, deserves to be stabbed in the back and killed." - Naoya in season 3 ep 1. Funny how he ended up with the same fate. Deserved.

Yeah people like to make this confusing by telling the reactor that Maki has cursed energy when its never really stated as far as I know. I don't think she ever had cursed energy the problem is the perception of her. If the universe that governs all of their powers views her as having cursed energy then it stands to reason that other characters would view her the same as well. Unless im mistaken and the manga is clear about it but I looked into it and couldn't find anything concrete if somebody can correct me feel free.

Maki's sister had a technique that creates matter out of cursed energy, before she could only create one or two bullets in her gun before running out of cursed energy but to create that second sword Maki used she used her basically life force and giving up her life so Maki can fully use her Heavenly pact and be the second Toji And also no Maki was not in any of the colonies so she wasn't getting any points in the game since she didn't yet bacome a player

From what I understand she technically had a tiny bit because of the link with her sister it's hard to say because they don't go into the specifics of it the only reason why I would say she probably had a small bit is because regular people have cursed energy can't see curses sorcerers can because of how they control the flow but we know toji who had none at all could see them to me this suggests she had essentially a bit overflowing from her sister not enough to do anything with it though but that's me looking at it as a very mechanical process and could be wrong with that

Woof, no Zeni clan left. Lucky she never saw herself as one and Megumi isn't Zeni either. Yeah, we aren't at the games yet x3

See I got the opposite conclusion because it was stated in the first episode that regular people can sometimes see cursed spirits in dire circumstances or special places but as far as we know Maki has never seen them without the glasses. We also know that Toji's senses are enhanced by his pact which is most likely why he can see curses and why Maki couldn't until hers are on the same level.

whoaa!! thank you both for the info and for answering my questions💖 I thought also Maki had non because she couldn't see the cursed spirits. without the glasses.

SprinkleVerse

ohhh thank you so much for the explanation! it's sad that Mai is gone but now Maki is so OP! 😮

SprinkleVerse

I was thinking about Rem and Ram too while watching Maki and Mai!! 😭 Thank you for the explanation I understand it now. ohh that's true it's a similar attack to Deku's but I also thought about Luffy in that moment 😆 yea serves him right and the whole clan they got what they deserved! 😓

I had to look this up because I didn't have a clear answer, but here's what I found; Toji could see cursed spirits, yes. But it wasn't because he had a small amount of cursed energy. It's stated that he had zero energy. His heavenly pact enhanced all of his senses to a superhuman level, including eyesight, which allowed him to see spirits. The same goes for Maki, now that her own pact is fulfilled. It's true that the show doesn't go into specifics, I'm mostly going off wiki information lol. Maki technically 'had' a small amount of CE, technically, but not in the same way as others did. She had CE because her twin had CE, and the universe perceived them as being the same person. So in other words, Maki had CE without any benefits from it, such as seeing curses or being able to use it to fight them. But because of this, her heavenly pact was never fulfilled, which made her physical prowess much weaker than Toji's. This meant she would never grow in strength or sorcery so long as her twin lived, despite all the crazy effort she put in. Honestly, the fact she was still holding her own against incredibly strong curses despite being doomed to be weak says a lot about her strength as a character. Makes it less surprising that Maki turns into an absolute demon when the pact was fulfilled.

I love how much the animators make references to other things. In this episode the whole group fight was a super cool reference to the movie Kill Bill. I also love how Maki's design changed slightly to look more like Toji but she maintains her original design.

SprinkleVerse

Yes! I noticed that too, Maki is starting to look like Toji! 😲
