Hello Patreon family! I hope you enjoy my detailed psychological analysis of episode 12 of Your Lie in April! When I think the show could not possibly impress me more with its poetic and emotional peak moments, here we are, it delivers yet again~

My main takeaways from the episode

1) Re-inventing ourselves (identity re-formation) is seldom easy but almost always rewarding

2) We need our meaningful community to inspire us and motivate us, especially when we are feeling lost and most vulnerable

3) Our dear boy-wonder Kousei finally realized that light can reach the bottom of the ocean, and that is what we call hope

If anyone watching this is struggling, please look at Kousei, and remember, hope belongs to all of us, don't give up, and hang in there!

Happy new week, everyone~

When Kaori’s 🎇 goes out she grabs Kousei’s and then holds it aloft against the night sky. It’s not just imagery to show that she is Kousei’s 🌟, but that it is her intent. And when Watari approaches she lights his sparkler with Kousei’s 🎇. This imagery isn’t just symbolic of inspiration - it’s symbolic of legacy.

Kaori: “Did you get taller? Oh, I get it. It’s because you’re not looking down anymore. “ What a call back to episode 4! Kaori: “You’re always looking down. That’s why you’re trapped inside those musical scores.” And it all finally clicks when Tsubaki pushes Kousei into the pool. The starlight/moonlight can reach the bottom of his ocean. He just needed to keep looking up. And now he is free of the musical scores. “Keep looking up. That’s the secret of life…” - Snoopy

You were as hyped by the end of this episode as I thought you'd be. We talked about how detrimental it was for Kousei to be unable to hear his own playing and it is still true. I believe it's his innate talent passed down from his mother that allows him the ability to flourish in the way his sensei describes. I know that I wouldn't be able to play with any confidence if I was deaf to my own sound. Kousei is just past the level of needing that crutch amd can just play by feeling and emotion. Also, Kaori's line of Kousei seeming taller because he isn't looking down anymore is just so, so powerful! It's one of the greatest compliments I think anyone that is struggling with confidence can hear!

And poor Watari getting as much or more abuse than Kousei this episode! No boy is safe in Your Lie in April! I feel you hit the nail on the head when talking about the physical abuse in this series. It's not to be taken literally. These are supposed to be comedic moments that break the constant emotional tension the series has. The physical abuse is way over the top on purpose. If it wasn't there, this show would just be almost nonstop depression.

Kashigawi asks Kaori what her plans for high school are. Kaori says she hasn’t thought about it. But her actions answer the question…
