Hello, Patreon family! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of the Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Episode 4. I cannot believe the pimp grandma, who really does appear to be Maomao's maternal grandmother, is the moon fairy!

My main takeaways from the episode

1) Lady Lihua's sizeable fruits got competition, and the beauty must run in the family; good thing pimp grandma is past her prime, otherwise, the four upper-first rank concubines got some serious competition

2) Perception is not reality, as I say often in my videos, and the episode brilliantly depicts the truth; my real question is, what is the true intention behind the two envoys and their gifts?

3) "Words are cheap, but actions speak louder," is the colloquial truism of behavioral signaling, and why behavioral patterns do not lie

Happy weekend and new week, everyone~

It's never been stated outright in the light novels that pimp grandma is Maomao's grandmother. But that does feel very in line with the sort of revelations that do happen in the story. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if it was revealed in the next couple novels.

It’s never said and yet it feels so likely that most of us just assume it’s true unless told specifically otherwise. After all “A woman did give birth to me, but a courtesan can never truly be a mother.” Seems to be a pervasive idea that holds them back from saying it. It clearly takes a lot of unspoken affection to hold her normal avarice in check and care for Fengxian in her illness all those years.

Also, welcome Symbolic, new seeker :) love your name and I can tell you’ll fit right in~

Yeah to be completely honest I was just too dense to notice until now.

9:10 Actually, glass mirrors are relatively new (Renaissance era) tech and were very expensive for a long time thereafter. Before that, people had to make do with frequently polished metal discs or plain old flat water to get some sense of their reflection, and it was naturally a fuzzier reflection . Which brings us to the all-controversial “what dynasty” question about this show. In reality, it’s worth mentioning at this point that this country’s history is far less 1:1 with IRL China’s than you may expect. Aesthetics most closely match the Tang. The Manchu have clearly never been around to leave their mark at all, and yet the technology level (New world crops like cacao; Glass Mirrors) matches the time period of the Qing, much later than the Tang

Yeah I heard folks said it’s like Tang dynasty as well but the exact era probably matters less

I sometimes use a polished car parked outside my workplace to check my reflection on the way home. Maybe they should gift one to Lady Gyokuyou so she can look at herself in style?

I think you're totally correct he's gonna use these rare medicines to incentivise Maomao haha, but I do think a slightly better way to word it is that he's looking for all these medicines for Maomao, period. It's Maomao's passion, and he probably feels good using his position for the sake of someone who really matters to him. It randomly reminds me a bit of Steve Irwin, who in an interview once said he LOVES money, and he'll take it from anyone and anywhere, for the sake of buying land for nature conservation's sake. Influence, power, and money can be a burden, but it's really quite wonderful when you can use them to help those or that which you love right?

Interesting how you say it's a stupid request to look for an impossible woman! It seems illogical if you take it at face value, but we know that these people are leading a foreign envoy and you said yourself that they may want to sabotage the kingdom. At the very least we can assume they're intelligent, which means the illogical nature of their request is intentional. Do you remember the blue roses from last season that Lackan requested as a challenge for Jinshi (and Maomao)? I think it's something similar to that, they know full well the impossibility of their request. It's intended to be unable to be fulfilled as sabotage probably...
