Hello Patreon family! I hope you enjoy my detailed psychological analysis of episode 15 of Your Lie in April! I think the keywords for this episode are emotional honesty and heartbreak~

My main takeaways from the episode

1) If we are not honest with our emotions, then who will?

2) I feel for Tsubaki because I can imagine the confusion that she is dealing with, the subject of her childhood best friend and neighbor also happens to be the subject of her romantic feelings. I can imagine the scary feeling of owning up to that possibility, but if we are not honest with ourselves, then we will also get hurt the most.

3) Will Kousei really stay next to Tsubaki, instead of embarking on his music institute journey? If so, what does Tsubaki represent in Kousei's mind? Only a dear childhood best friend, or more??

Also, who is this little girl who resembles Sailor Moon?? I could sense her scheming ^^

Happy new week, everyone~

Kousei’s so dense when it comes to girls. He’s only speaking in the moment when he tells Tsubaki he’ll stay with her. Tsubaki doesn’t think she can speak the language of music with Kousei. But she’s the one that was trying to play “Clair de Lune” in the music room - one of the most Romantic pieces of music, the song they hummed to each other on the beach last episode. So much symbolism in that scene. Tsubaki has to make room for Kousei on the piano bench and Kousei does keep to her side. It’s easy to miss this, but Kousei is playing “Clair de Lune” for Tsubaki as he intends - gently and more languidly with a comforting/reassuring tone; unfocused on the music and without the specter of his trauma. And baka Kousei has to make another “but it (moon) is pretty comment” while humming/playing romantic music to Tsubaki. Another way I would describe Kousei’s playing is almost conversational in the way someone who is actively listening allows for space in the conversation - it is reflective of the actual conversation. If you listen again without focusing on the words, you’ll understand what I mean. Tsubaki does understand what Kousei is telling her with his piano playing because she’s responding to the way he is playing for her. And the scene ends with Tsubaki scooting over on the bench and they lean into each other.

High school in Japan is three years grades 10-12. Kousei, Kaori, Tsubaki, and Watari are 14yo 9th graders, 3rd year middle school. That would make Nagi a 12yo 7th grader. So for comparison other HS shows Bocchi, Marin and Gojo were first years making them 15yo and 10th graders for their S1.

The frustrating cry of Kaori at the end of that episode just shatters my heart into pieces. I also do not envy Tsubaki and the absolute hurricane of emotions she is trying to sort out. Even Kousei is in denial of his feelings. It must be nice to be Watari right now.

Yeah Tsubaki definitely understands music more than she gives herself credit for & Kousei is very dense haha

Watari is coasting while everyone else is drowning ugh but yeah that far cry for help at the end shall haunt my dreams

In comparison…Watari is the only one that doesn’t deny his feelings. He’s not dense either. But as we saw after his soccer tournament loss, he knows how to put on a brave face for everyone else and be a supportive leader. Kousei and Tsubaki are stuck in their own heads. I think Watari won’t allow himself to feel sorry for his own situation because he feels that he needs to be brave and supportive of Kaori. That’s what a man is supposed to do.

Watari definitely has a fairly high EQ, only really lacking in self control. I wish we got more of a focus on him as he's part of the main friend trio, instead of just having him bounce around in the background as the romantic rival, comedic relief, and third wheel roles he's been relegated to. Story wise it makes sense since he doesn't have a connection to music, but then we get scenes like in the hospital last episode when he gives Tsubaki a concerned look but then we don't get any real follow up from it.

I love Watari as a character. He always seems so laid back, and always seems to know just what to say to Kousei when he needs the advice. I don't want to go into more detail about how great he is because it's mild spoiler territory for anyone reading this that hasn't watched the series all the way through. Basically, he is smart, more conscientious than he let's on, and a true friend til the end.

In a minor way I can relate to Kaori at the end of this episode. The day after I turned 20 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Which I’m not going to sit here and pretend it is the same as a terminal illness. But for sure I felt a sense of betrayal towards my own body. I remember thinking “you’re my pancreas, my immune system, why can’t you just work correctly?” There was so much resentment directed towards my own body.

Bruh I legit completely, and I mean COMPLETELY forgot that little girl even existed lol, I guess the end of this show has escaped my brain in the near decade since I watched it

Man idk about that spark of patriotism there Benoit lol, not only is the US generally politically depraved in recent years, despite being the world's largest economy it's only 38th in the world for propsperity. It has the highest number of homeless people out of every western democracy (though not the highest per capita), and it's the western democracy which has the highest wealth disparity index by FAR. It isn't even close, 0.850 in 2021 compared to secod place Ireland with 0.8 . That makes it the 25th worst country in the WORLD for wealth disparity, and you can be sure things have gotten worse since the last survey in 2021. It's the 5th most hated country in the world via the 2026 Democracy Perception Index, losing ONLY to Israel, North Korea, Afghanistan, and Iran in that order. It is the only western democracy with a negative global perception index. Now, the US and its peoples are certainly more privileged than many countries this is true, especially regarding basic infrastructure and safety (if you look a certain way). But "top 1% in the world" by virtue of only being BORN in the US only applies generally if your family is middle class and white, I imagine. Otherwise there are still millions who suffer in poverty and depraved conditions. 35 million to be more precise, since 10% of the population qualifies as living in povert. That's more people than some countries!

I just released ep 20 and don’t blame you one bit for blocking the ending out lol so hurray

It’s not about patriotism, tho I am a veteran, and I agree the 1% might be a stretch lol but my general sentiment stands. We reap the benefits of our nationalities whether we like it or not, especially as Americans, and I’m speaking for someone who’s lived in 3 continents and 4 countries (France, Korea, China, and the US) across my childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, so I fully know the privilege of what living in the US means
