Hello Patreon family! I hope you enjoy my detailed psychological analysis of episode 17 of Your Lie in April! I am glad and heartbroken for Kousei after Kaori's official reveal of her terminal stage illness...

My main takeaways from the episode

1) Honesty is the best policy because truth is a linear process, while lies require more layers and convolusion to cover up more tracks and lies in the process, leaving wakes of destruction

2) The only way is through, and I respect Kousei's tremendous courage to show up and re-visit Kaori after his talk with Watari, a man's man, and honestly, the best friend anyone can ask for

Hang in there, everyone, and I am mostly talking to myself at this point...

Happy new week~

The YLIA emotional rollercoaster barrels ahead. This is such an underrated episode as it lays the groundwork for the final two story arcs. We carry on the low of last episode to start and we end once again anticipating the high of another performance. In between there’s so much growth. Brace yourself! These final episodes reach greater highs and lows than already experienced.

Watari was definitely a legend in this episode. I mean. The guy definitely seems like he might be a romantic menace to women everywhere, but at least as a friend he’s solid.

*counts on fingers* Yeah? Yeah! I do brush my teeth and wash my hair more than an hour per week! *sigh of relief* I'm totally normal!

I definitely think, and I think you realized later, that Kousei was not people pleasing with Tsubaki in the beginning by refusing to see Kaori. This episode is just so jam packed with emotional moments and still has room for some comedy.

When I was going through depression in my past, I would often watch intentionally emotional shows like this one. It feels strange to seek out a tragic series when I'm going through my lowest points, but it was the emotion that stirred within me when watching episodes like this that would remind me that I haven't become numb to my feelings. I haven't shutdown. If media can still bring me to tears and feel emotion, then I haven't given up. I don't know if I explained it very well, but they always helped me move on to tomorrow and not just let my loneliness win.

Watari is the best. I really wish I had a friend like him growing up.

Watari is the only character emotionally secure enough to become the true witness of the story, because he sees the lie, participates in it, benefits from it least, and still protects what it was really meant to do.

I did this with music to get through depression - to help channel buried emotions that I was struggling to express. Now I do it as a way to head off depression. And I’ve added emotional anime and OSTs as a way to give myself emotional releases. Funny enough I was struggling emotionally and started rewatching Violet Evergarden and listening to the soundtrack constantly when Benoit was doing his reactions to it and that’s how I found his channel. I listen to the YLIA soundtrack often as it invokes many different emotions that I can just sit with and feel.

Psychotherapist Reacts

Yeah research shows that listening to sad music is therapeutic (shows could be a double edged sword given the visual elements and could evoke more sadness depending on one’s emotional state and self awareness), and I do that too! And looks like you’re slowly getting back to your groove since I know you said you’ve been getting slammed at work, Erik!
