Hello, Patreon family! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of the Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Episode 10. The episode ending had me scratching my head and feeling confused with the unexpected paranormal elements?! What is going on...

My main takeaways from the episode

1) Outside of what we know is what we think we know, everything that we do not know, and what we are yet aware of that we do not know (This is a tongue twister, but let that sink in)

2) The mystery of life is trippy, full of unknowns, yet equally profound; that is why I am a psychotherapist, trained as a social scientist and a practicing Christian, as paradoxically that may sound

3) Shisui is not who she says she is nor who she appears to be; I will be on the lookout for higher-ranking concubines or characters who have green eyes and purple hair

Happy new week, everyone~

The frog has leapt (but not yet landed) As for the triplets: there names are basically black wu (koku-u), white wu (haku-u) and red wu (seki-u) When making names, AD often leaves color words in normal Japanese while using Chinese-derived pronunciation (Onyomi) for the rest

The world is full of things Maomao can't understand... like Jinshi's extremely obvious feelings. I think once someone has had relations with the emperor, they are not allowed to leave. So any of the girls who the last emperor actually touched, regardless of if they got pregnant, became permanent residents of the palace. Any ideas about 🐸

Ohh this is good to know but I’m sure Maomao and I will continue to mix them up lol

Thank you so much Benoit🙏 It’s true that it feels like filler….but so far The Apothecary Diaries has no filler episodes. The ride is getting deep!

Love that you go into your personal belief and experience with the paranormal! I myself have so many stories from my time living in a 275 yr old farm house with a very coloured history and background. Even though this episode felt like filler, it is very important to the plot, as you already know with this show, nothing is throw away dialogue or imagery. Also - the 🐸 is almost upon us

You're getting to the important parts!! Follow maomao's clues, if you're vigilant enough, all will start making sense, the pieces of the puzzle are coming together. This episode was a nice break from the casualties in the earlier episodes, but still filled with lore. Hope you'll enjoy the rest!!

the 🐸 is close at hand, but not yet here :) soon

There's definitively no filler episodes and EVERY episode is important in some way.

Hmm... Shisui... she couldn't be... *checks older episodes* No way! That would be crazy!! I don't even want to say my theory because it sounds ludicrous. But it would answer some questions that have been bugging me for a long time.

Someone instantly came to mind when Maomao mentioned that she is familiar, and it's a character we've met since season 1. And I'm blind to the rest of the series, so I'm totally guessing, but maybe she's Loulan. Her hair and eyes match and we haven't heard her speak yet. I've tried to check her previous scenes, but under all her makeup, it's hard to tell what she looks like and I'm not sure there's a shot of her next to Maomao to judge if she's taller than Maomao like Shisui is. That's my theory anyway. Loving this season!

This episode's commentary is accidentally also a good example of why doctors and therapists cannot treat themselves. It's nigh impossible to be objective about your own beliefs and experiences. To be clear I fully respect your beliefs, I think it's wonderful you're a Christian and you seem like a very good person. But when we have beliefs we can often look for or create gaps in our own introspection for their sake. For example, your friend's poltergeist story. I trust that your friend wouldn't lie, however it's entirely possible their experience was a result of cognitive biases and a misunderstanding of what happened. The same can be said about your belief in the ghost's existence, perhaps you believe it to be true because it serves your personally held beliefs about the Universe? Now whether or not it's true, I cannot know that. Maybe it is really evidence of ghosts. But in any case, I find it interesting how we approach the world only based off of what we wish to believe. Maybe you can make the argument I'm only questioning the story because I *don't* believe in the supernatural? EDIT: Oh you even talked about it in the episode! How belief can influence the "objective" reality that we experience, making us certain of things that may or may not be true, and sometimes even inducing real bodily effects like those phantom pregnanices, munchausens and so forth. Also side note semi unrelated but I do want to say that science is not and has not been reductionist for over 100 years. I think I said this before in a previous video, but to be clear, one of the fundamental RULES in today's understanding of the world scientifically is that it is impossible, as a law of nature, to know everything. There's a specific definition for what 'knowing' something means, it isn't referring to like, what your neighbour had for dinner, or the existence of space cows lol, but yeah! I really mean it when I say it isn't reductionist, those theories aren't even considered correct science anymore. If you want to discuss materalism and so forth, that's an argument made by philosophy rather than science.

Genuinely a bloody god horror story from Shisui tho, author cooked hard. I'm shocked you think Maomao is probably a good storyteller, literally every single time she's ever explained a mystery or told information it's always pretty flat and flavourless lol

Psychotherapist Reacts

For sure, lots of nuances there, and we could argue that there is no such “objective” experience because everyone filters the reality through their subjectivity

One arc’s filler is another arc’s plot twist.
