Hello, Patreon family! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of the Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Episode 13. This was a fascinating episode, with the seemingly random nature of Xiaolan's request, the end of her service term, and social networking through the bathhouse. Of course, the big reveal, for me, is that I believe Shishou is LUOLAN!!!!

My main takeaways from the episode

1) I believe Shisui is Lady Luolan because of her unusual knowledge about social capital, networking, and access to the limited bathhouse area exclusive to mid-to-upper-rank concubines, not to mention her reputation of being a concubine of a thousand different faces since the introduction of Luolan in season 1 (what a crazily deep foreshadowing)

2) I am beyond curious about Luolan/Shisui’s true nature, her unrevealed personality, and whether she will become Maomao and Jinshi's future alliance, given her prestige, power, and influence

3) I am getting a Thai massage later this weekend after being inspired by the episode and the importance of self-care, because we too matter

In your defense, it took me 15 minutes before catching it LOL But it's a fun episode with lots of good Xiaolan and Shisui time. I can't wait to see how your opinion of Shisui especially grows over time :3

This is my favorite OP so far. Interestingly, the west had very strong bathhouse traditions back in Roman times (and North of Rome, in Tribal Times). Of course, in every culture, these sorts of places where people are unclothed and trying to relax have an easy avenue by which they may become lucratively disreputable if they so desire… that’s the case with Spas everywhere, in any time, clothed in any culture. But as you might expect… the church had a bigger problem with this than the contemporary authorities in other parts of the world (and fair enough, they’d seen what Rome’s morally ugly side was like before they managed to subdue it.). With the church trying to crack down on such places, it became more typical for even those parts of Europe that retained bathhouses to stop treating them as grand public works *within* the cities, and start having them be a fenced-off set of tents set up outside the city walls (which, counterproductively perhaps, made the people who operated them less supervised and gave them the sense of “we’re already stigmatized, might as well monetize it.”) When the technology came for private baths to be commonly available on a regular basis, this only sped the decline further. This is also why it only really survived in the fringes of Europe: The Finnish Sauna and Russian Banya. As well as the Turkish Bath, which was a reintroduction from outside.

I'm glad you picked up on the fact that while there might not be a lot that happens per say in the episode there is a lot of information building for you to better understand the characters and why they may act the way that they do. It's the little details of this show that make it stand out so much. I look forward to what information you pick up in the next two episodes.

shared nudity was a thing in the west until the "modesty" culture didn't kick in, in the early 19th century. Strangely correlates with the ideas of eugenics for the elites, modesty laws and social engineering. But hey it's just me being a crazy conspiracy theorist. Anyways homo-sapiens have been bathing together literally since forever and since we evolved like that, so it must be crucially important to our mental and physical health.

When I made the prediction that Shisui is Loulan back in the ghost story episode, even I thought i was crazy, but you made it make so much more sense here. Love seeing Xiaolan get more screentime. She is just too adorable!
