Hello everyone! I hope you enjoy my detailed psychological analysis of episode 6 of Avatar: The Last Airbender! I loved the much-deserved spotlight on Katara in this week's episode, and what a beautiful journey it has been, witnessing Katara's increased hope after thawing Aang like a frozen chicken, and now galvanizing everyone to act upon their courage.

My main takeaways from the episode

1) As I share in all my series, and I will continue to beat this dead horse until we absolutely vaporize this—life is a team sport, and if Katara's inspiration to everyone in the episode does not highlight that, I don't know what will

2) I absolutely loved the creators' decision to let Katara experience her initial failure with her motivational speech because we cannot inspire someone out of their hopelessness, learned helplessness, or depression; a difficult but important truth for all of us to ponder

3) Katara truly was the centerpiece of the episode: her growth, her unwavering hopefulness, her act of courage to infiltrate the enemy's prison, and her resonance with Haru (and maybe potential romance, similar to Sokka with the warrior of Kyousi?)

P.S., I will react to episodes 7-8 together, so you can expect a hearty yap session ~

See you next weekend :)

Symbolic Remnant

I describe A:TLA as a “Cartoon with Anime Characteristics”

Since Avatar is a collaborative and respectful cultural bridge between studios from the west and studios from the east that make what is considered Anime then I think Avatar does deserve an Anime classification due to it being animated by a studio that does that genre making it fit the seemingly publicly perceived eastern studio animation requirement. That said I think it deserves it either way because the genre of Anime is not based solely in the geographical location or studio making it but mainly on general art style theming that originated in Japan or other eastern cultures which is why anime’s can look so drastically different from one another in world or character design. It’s because it has that style and theming kept in mind when making the art. People ask whether avatar is anime or western cartoon but the truth is it’s a seamless mix of both styles evenly respected and that fact is why I think the question even comes up this often and divisively at all.

This is such a good episode for Katara's characterization. She is very caring, but she also has a strong sense of justice and altruism.

Imo one of the things that identifies modern anime is a meta-narrative in a serialized episodic format. American cartoons historically haven't had this. They were vehicles for purely episodic content treadmills. They could be watched in any order. This show is, at its heart, a narrative storytelling project. In my mind that's the most anime thing about it.
