Hello, everyone! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of Apothecary Diaries Season 3, Episode 1. Thank you all for your patience. After a few hectic weeks with my private practice, I wanted to take my time with the pilot episode, reset, and get into the best headspace possible because some folks said season 3 is supposed to be even more intense than season 2?! I cannot even imagine, but here we are~

Episode 2 is ready for Yappers and Seekers for a back-to-back early access.

My main takeaways from the episode

1) The pilot episode did NOT disappoint, to say the least. Both of the pilot episodes of the previous two seasons started as a slow cooker, but I guess the author said, "Nope, not this time, we're going full speed since day 1." Indeed, what a full send

2) How are we going to start the episode 1 opening with a locust plague?! China is the second-largest producer and consumer of rice, and what is more devastating to the stability of a Chinese dynasty than a famine? A civil war that Season 2 barely prevented

3) I love the subtle symbolism of Chou-u, the former guard of the stronghold, and Loulan's whistleblowing letter representing the legacy of the Shi Clan, and the important idea that loss of memories does not mean the past has no ongoing influence on us; the past is a forever part of who we are, but we also do not need to let our past define who we are today, and who we are becoming

Also, can we talk about it's our favorite moon frog prince's mating season soon, presumably starting next episode?! Will the ship of JinMao sail, or sink with Maomao's ongoing wall of denial?!

I hope you all have a meaningful week to come, and until next week :)

P.S. Our content schedule is absolutely stacked with the Apothecary Diaries Season 3, Rascal Does Not Dream, and Avatar: The Last Airbender :)

I’ve been checking Patreon every 20 minutes. So excited!

The bars are unlikely to be Fentanyl, lol. My guess is hashish or opium.

Maran

Fun fact: The word assassin comes from the word hashish. Apparently many assassinations (I believe mostly in Western Asia and the Middle East) had to do with the hashish trade. The word was something like “hashishin.” Of course, that was long before the western colonial powers started flooding China with opium.

Here we go, the peak its here one more time Im pretty sure they messed up with the subtitles, as locusts are the plague and grasshopers are fine, they are the same insect tho, the difference is their phase of behaviour. The main reason of this difference is about how they group, grasshopper is solitary, they blend with the surroundings and avoid predators (thats why they are more greenish), as for locust, they crowd and triggers high levels of serotonine that make em grow stronger wings and develope a fiercer appetite, but most of all, they become social forming massive dense swarms Ah-Duo isnt back in the rear palace, its the other way around, the emperor was visiting Ah-Duo The hairpin is a different one, I checked the other one to confirm! An impressive analysis, as usual. I'm ready to dive into all the political drama that's going to unfold this season!

I think my new favorite text expression will be ::plate slap::

I'm happy that this Season is here and we are back to you turning into an emoji when some characters do what they do best. There is so much happening and they need you to know what has happened in Seasons 1 or 2 to be able to fully understand what is happening. I would feel bad for someone that tries to skip Seasons 1 and 2. Trust when I say they will go hard this season with what is to come.

PEAK IS BACK!

Symbolic Remnant

The vast majority of close-range assassins, especially at this time before the mass propagation of firearms, could expect to be caught and killed immediately during the strike, so it was said in the Middle East that many members of assassin agencies (often mystical Islamic religious orders on the surface) got absolutely (perhaps even ceremonially) blitzed on hash before their attacks to calm the nerves and prepare for a more painless death.

Thank you for the additional info!

Symbolic Remnant

It is a preserved translation mishap that dates to the light novel. Basically, it got published and they couldn’t really take it back so the terms are reversed throughout the entire English-localized version of the Apothecary Diaries Universe now.

Symbolic Remnant

The pale woman has separate, individual teeth animated. You noticed and commented on it. Anyone who has watched a lot of anime probably subconsciously know how that’s telling them to feel even if they can’t articulate it. It’s a pattern that is almost universal. Also, the Anime uses the garden party here to put faces to political intrigues that, in the novels, are still spoken of only in generalities in this section . It’s only slightly earlier in the case of Lishu’s father (more on him at a later time) and MUCH earlier in the case of a certain separate complainant about the rise of the You clan (though, much is still being preserved in mystery about him).

i believe the intro is not very spoilery if you want to watch it or maybe watch once and dont pause it to avoid deeper context but yes the intro is so good and well animated budget is way up

I don't think what I'm about to say is any spoiler, so I wanted to share that Ah-Duo remains closely connected to the capital because she is the Emperor's true love and his cherished childhood friend. Because of their profound lifelong bond, the Emperor completely refused to send her away to a distant province when she was forced to retire from the Inner Court. Instead, he gifted her the Southern Imperial Villa, a massive estate located right in the royal capital so she could remain nearby. While she is no longer a consort, she now serves as the overseer of this villa, turning it into a crucial political stronghold where she works closely with Jinshi. At Jinshi's request, she uses the property to shelter and protect individuals who need to safely "disappear" from palace politics. Ultimately, keeping her at this adjacent villa allows the Emperor to visit his true love privately and keeps her perfectly positioned to watch over Jinshi, who is secretly their biological son.
