Hello, everyone! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of Apothecary Diaries Season 3x2. Yappers and Seekers, I hope you enjoy the back-to-back episodes 1 and 2. At this point, with foreshadowing and breadcrumbs, I feel like this season is moving toward the infamous opioid war in China.

My main takeaways from the episode

1) We need a word that is stronger than "malice" to describe what the culprits are doing from the West regarding the suspected spread of an opioid crisis by manufacturing addiction by preying on the most vulnerable, the starved and desperate; no different from the Cartels

2) I cannot believe that Maomao is low-key accepting the possibility of being with Jinshi at the end with her "whatever" after Pairin pointed out explicitly why Jinshi is visiting, his true intentions, and what Maomao means to him

3) A seemingly low-key episode, but I know this means we have heavy-hitting episodes incoming, which I am stoked to see; the psychological rollercoaster continues

What was your favorite moment from the episode? Also, I am here to make Luomen proud with my predictions.

Until next week :)

I love how your coughing fit came exactly the same moment as Jinshi’s spit take.

Your analysis of the first part of the episode was spot-on, it was as if you were connected to Maomao! Here’s my take on the second part of the episode, since it’s no secret that I love everything about JinMao (long yapping sorry about that!): First of all, thanks to last season’s finale (the revelation of Jinshi’s status and Maomao developing increasingly stronger feelings after learning she was rescued by Jinshi himself), the dynamic between them has shifted once again. At this point, it’s impossible for Maomao to deny that something is happening between them, and since she doesn’t know how to handle her feelings, she no longer tries to ignore the tension between them, now she intentionally sabotages their relationship. Maomao doesn’t even believe their relationship is possible for the reasons we already know: her low self-esteem, her rejection of political status, and her past trauma, which prevents her from expressing her feelings. When Maomao teases him by saying that if he doesn’t want to sleep alone, she herself tells him, “It was a joke”, but not because she’s offering to sleep with him herself, but rather thinking of a courtesan. Deep down, however, she knows that Jinshi wants to sleep alone, and when Jinshi replies that he doesn’t want to sleep alone, Maomao’s Great Wall of Denial kicks in, along with her cognitive dissonance, she gets upset. Why? She gets jealous, you can tell by the look on her face. Before that, she had a cheerful voice and was even joking around with him, but as soon as he answers her, her voice drops a notch and she gets very serious. But at the same time the fact that she thinks he wants another girl works for her, she wants to believe that, this denial suits Maomao because it fits her narrative that someone of his status couldn’t possibly be with her, she shirks the “responsibility” of facing her feelings by sabotaging the relationship from the start. The problem is that the reality is that Jinshi only wants her, and that’s not going to change. Unfortunately, Jinshi also plays a part by allowing these misunderstandings to continue, because it’s true that he can’t tell her, “I want you to take a nap with me,” since that would be an order and wouldn’t take Maomao’s wishes into account, which Jinshi wants to respect at all costs. But in my opinion, there are ways to be clearer about his intentions, and he’s part of this emotional entanglement between the two of them. To wrap up, two notes: 1- I saw in a discussion on social media that the translation “whatever” is incorrect, and this is indeed significant, since she actually says something more like “What am I supposed to accept?” which makes more sense given Maomao’s current situation, also in the Spanish subtitles, the dialogue is indeed the one mentioned in that discussion. 2- I think Maomao didn’t ask Suiren about his preferences, it was the other way around, lol. Suiren told Maomao that Jinshi likes girls his own age as a hint that he’s in love with Maomao. Thats all folks, just me thinking out loud because I love this dynamic!

Haha always appreciate your thoughts and the translations error makes sense and changes my ending conclusion then

Your predictions in this episode were practically prescient.

Symbolic Remnant

The Bi clan are characters that, by trailer info, are expected to be involved in the Anime-original movie storyline that’s coming up. This episode is the first AD media of ANY kind that names them.

Symbolic Remnant

Fun fact about the “Urgency Level” stamping system in the US military during WW2: Admiral Willis A. Lee (who, by the way, was a scholar of Chinese history in his spare time) had his own stamp custom-made that read “FRANTIC” to make his most urgent mail look even scarier and more important than all the other piles of urgent paperwork. Frantic-marked papers of his are partially responsible for forcing the Ordinance bureau to fast-track the adoption of some of the most important Anti-Air system developments that gave the allies an edge during the war, such as proximity sensor detonation on flak shells.

To piggy-back off another comment, it'll be interesting to re-watch the episode/season when they have it as the english VA's to see what the translation winds up being since there has been comments that the current subtitles are AI generated. In the light novel for the scene where Pairin confronts Maomao they have it as Pairin saying "Isn't it about time you gave in?" she asked. "Gave in to what?" Maomao asked, turning away from her elder sister and heading back to the shop. As a whole this season you will see and understand that Maomao isn't the more reliable narrator as we progress through the series from here on out which again is realistic as our views of things are skewed by life experience, trauma and emotions even if we don't want it to be. This episode is a nice light hearted episode to give a break for some of the heavier tones that will happen. I knew you would wind up pausing so much with this episode that you might not even have to worry about copyright issues on youtube for the general audience lol. I'm so looking forward to what is to come from here on out.

I love that Jinshi is the only heavenly maiden you acknowledge. lol! You were really shocked when that story wasnt' about him. hahaha!

Last comment. This is the first episode where I truly felt bad for Jinshi. Maomao's denial is so crazy when she thinks about her "heavenly maiden" and his "frog" ALL THE TIME. lol. Also, cracking up at how a "Whatever" from MaoMao means so much.
