On the so-called "incel documentary", TFW NO GF.

We discuss the new documentary TFW NO GF, which focuses on the lives of extremely online alienated loners in the US. It has consequently been labelled the "incel documentary". Because the subjects are allowed to speak for themselves, it's also been called "irresponsible".

We take apart what, if anything, makes this cohort distinct from the past - is it the internet? are they lonelier? are their prospects worse? - and try to place the phenomenon in a wider context. If you haven't watched the documentary, there are clips from it interspersed throughout. TFW NO GF on Amazon Prime List of Pirate Bay proxies

I am American and Phil is 100% right if you came to class with a coffee you were with her and proud of it

Thanks guys, this was on point as usual. My reading was slightly different, I felt like Moyers made the aesthetic- transgressive aspect much stronger than you guys would have it. Also because of the soundtrack.

I think what Phil said r.e the new type of incel will be fundamentally different is quite spot on, in that the spaces that these online communities are in shape their discourse and content. 4chan seems to always come up with these topics but I don’t think that’s where the typical incel resides anymore - that’s the internet troll of a previous decade, there’s a plethora of other sites and platforms that are being used by a new demographic (things like Discord for example) and with these different spaces come different in-group jokes, messages and conversations.

I have thinked that its pretty interesting that the verdict always comes after the ’is he one of us’-question. Its funny reading the comments and people using the word incel, whereas what I hear is kantbot or the director think that incels even exist. I have to agree that it is a word that the system is looking at itself from, othering people, who’ve othered themselves by being too online. Of course this happens in osmosis of both systems. And I thought that Phil was brave enough(or was he exhibiting incel like behavior?)to not call these guys losers. The magnitude of words is changing and incel means something way more specific, specific to the knotting done in by capital.

One thing that’s interesting is how both wojack and Pepe lack any kind of individuality. Richard Seymour mentions how twitter and social media make users long for a self confirmation with likes and replies. He describes it as addictive but also seems sort of a manic depressive dichotomy that i think Alex mentions seems wojack is the depressive lack of confirmation and the Pepe and trolling is a manic extreme behavior looking for attention, but it’s nihilistic that it sort of recognizes the emptiness of this pursuit.

What is the punk song right at the end?

I'm going to be that guy and say Phil interrupted too much. Come on there's only 3 of you. You ought to be able to allow each of you room to finish your points. I tried to watch the doc before listening, but it's no longer available through Prime, and I don't like using P2P.
