On sectarianism & identitarianism.

Karl Sharro (@KarlreMarks) is back on Bunga to talk to us about his essay "The Retreat from Universalism in the Middle East and the World".Lebanon has been used as a model for other Middle Eastern countries, even though its confessional system is a disaster. But Lebanese-style sectarianism isn't a form of 'feudal' backwardness – in fact it represents a precursor of the multicultural and identitarian politics in the West.

Who are the enemies of universalism today, East and West? And what sort of political projects are capable of rejuvenating secular universalism?See also:

Not to offend, but isn't the "universalism" of Islamic imperialism well... actually pretty feudal and backward compared to even the Lebanese confessional system? A world divided into empires legitimated by their claim to possess the true universal religion certainly *smells* ancien-regime. (This being about the material 10m-15m.) And yes, I can't imagine how much of a naive idiot Westerner you'd have to be to hold up Lebanon as an example to follow. Holy fucking shit.

Living in Northern Ireland with its own sectarian constitutional settlement, I obviously found this episode interesting. Here though the segment of the population that does not identify with either of the Unionist or Republican camp is growing. And I think for these folk the settlement looks more and more antiquated. And yet old divisions persist and it’s far from clear how we move to something better without endangering the hard-won peace.
