There’s a 3rd song on the same album that you missed

Warren Bradley

The whole album is wonderfully produced and I'd honestly recommend it if you want to get into Dr Dre more. It's a good cap on his career.

A silver bullet is a term used for the best targeted specific solution, often pharma reasearch will mention silver bullets for new drugs especially when they have reduced side effects

Szymon Tusting

Also that sound in genocide that you thought was from drop it like its hot is just a trumpet playing a fairly standard 2 note bar and pharelle and dre may have been doing the same thing but not a copy/reference. Dre was inspired by cinematic scores so theres a lot of old hollywood movie score refs in the music

Technically we're still waiting for detox

Gregory Smith

If there is one thing Dre is going to do is produce tf out of some music lol He's widely known as one of if not THE greatest producer in HIp Hop for a reason

Gregory Smith

"Started from the bottom" is also a reference to Drake's popular song and "nominate 6 to carry him" is also a double because they call Drake the "6 God" because for some reason they call Toronto the 6

I absolutely love when I already know the lore and nodding along while homegirl don’t know how to verbalize her speculation and she just be all the way correct while still being skeptical.. She is great at this.

It's so, so, so interesting that you loved these songs this much. As someone that grew up in LA and fell in love with hip hop listening to 93.5 KDAY "Back in the Day" in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Dr. Dre was a foundational artist for me in learning about hip hop. And, because of that, Detox was insanely anticipated. When Compton came out, it was immediately hyped as the most important album release of the year... and to me, it was just fine. I relisten every now and then, and I still come away thinking it's just fine. None of the songs on the album made much of a cultural impact, and it's not really ever referenced as a notable hip hop release of the 2010s. Production is solid, there are some good songs, but nothing more (IMO). I would highly recommend Dre's debut, the Chronic, which is a stone-cold classic as the mainstream popularization of the"G-Funk" subgenre of hip hop, and even his sophomore album 2001, which has some insane bangers even though the whole project is a bit uneven. I will warn you, even by hip hop standards, Dre's music has a ton of misogyny, which might make for uncomfortable listens. But the production on both of those albums is incredible, and the guest appearances set a much, much higher mark than Compton (for me!). Long comment, I'm really glad you liked these, and it was a new perspective on this album, which to me will always be fine but one of the most disappointing hip hop albums of my lifetime.

Awesome reaction, I never heard these before

I think you're referring to "Darkside/Gone". You didn't mention a title :-)

Gotta be honest - if you want to do an "Introduction to Dr Dre" - I would STRONGLY recommend the NWA's EP called "100 Miles and Runnin". Among the craziest production in music history.

Modelo

100 miles and dope man is peak gangsta rap production.
