Let’s go!!!

Jeffrey Garcia

This is Keem’s Mr. Morale and some DAMN.-level anthems in one. Only wish I have is that it was longer.

katai

I’m so glad you listen to this album it’s been on rotation since it dropped

algorerhythm

Vambie said "Thursday, you gon meet Baby Keem"

Maya

Yayyy so excited to get into this 😊

Jonathan Riley

This is one of those things where I didn’t know I wanted it until I got it

Alyx V

let's gooooooooo! ❤️

the2ndkev

When he says “when I was dying for my bitch my mom was sleeping in a tint” He’s referencing his first breakout mixtape called “Die for my Bitch” So pretty much when he was working on that project, his mama was out struggling. The mixtape was fire too btw💕

Aidan

Let’s goooooooooo

Maya

Btw the dying for my b line in the security was a reference to his album “die for my b-“ basically saying when that album was released his mom was sleeping in a tent

Sean888

I thought it was very cool that you picked up on the stereotypical casual misogyny and why it makes much more sense after watching the doc. It’s something I’ve seen ppl criticize him (and rap in general) for. For the project as a whole it’s cool to see him seemingly really confident in finding his voice and using different sounds to tell his story

Kelsey

Going into this i had the thought that you wouldn't pick up how Andre 3000 coded I Am Not A Lyricist is so I was SO happy to hear you make that connection. When I first heard it i was SHOCKED how much it sounded like him and the chorus gave me goosebumps. Sounds straight out of ATLiens imo

SamC

Let me find out shake that monkey came on at a party and Vambs was getting active lol

Str8Jacket

Pretty sure his uncle supplied his mom with alcohol, and she struggles with substance abuse.

Brenda T.

Not sure if you're aware Vambie, but that was Ludacris that little Keem was listening to in the car and also Ludacris who presented him with his first Grammy.

Sir Perc III

Wow! I can’t believe you picked up how much he sounded like André on I’m not a lyricist😭. I thought the same thing when I first heard it.

Ceasar

Nice! I’m happy you were able to fit in this album. It’s pretty damn good, and I’m interested to see how Keem continues to grow and mature as an artist/person. With each release he seems to develop further, and put together more pieces in his style/repertoire. Keem is really an all-around talent in his ability to produce his own songs, and switch his styles at the drop of a hat. Also, I really appreciate your honesty and openness during your final thoughts. As someone who’s listened to Rap my entire life (I unabashedly love the genre!), and am now in my early 30’s, I have occasional hesitation with some content, too (I similarly have to compartmentalize the art for what it is). You’re not alone in that respect. Much appreciation for your analysis, and willingness to engage with the art, regardless. As always, thanks for the great content and all the best, Vambie.

JayDubb1977

The Kendrick line "Flood your contour, make you blush like this"- Whitney is a beautician and her company is "Blushed by Whit"

Ray

finally!!! 🔥🔥🔥

Especialbeauty22

I would love to see you react to the two music videos from this album

golden

YES!!

Str8Jacket

I love this album and listen to it regularly. A couple of things to consider when you listen again: I don’t think his mother died. I think his grandmother told him she died because his mother was in such a bad place with addiction, and he was so young at the time. In interviews, he has said his mother was recently in rehab. Baby Keem is 25 and became a Grammy-winning artist at 19. There are rumors/speculation that he was in a relationship when he and Kendrick made Family Ties, and that the line “#2 DM-ing my bitch. I don’t ask why” was a reference to Drake interfering in his relationship. Your intuition about some of the shade is probably spot on. You’re also justified in being uncomfortable with his relationship with women. When I think about my mindset at that age, it was pretty immature. I matured, and so did my interactions with women. I look forward to following Keem’s journey and evolution. Hopefully, he has good people around him who can help steer him in the right direction. In the meantime, the music great. I love the way the album weaves back and forth between upbeat and introspective songs, like the highs and lows of nights in a casino.

Maya

Yesss they’re great

Maya

I grew up in a similar environment as keem and because of it I didn’t realize how desensitized I am to the way women are spoken about in this way . And I’m a woman myself 🤦🏽‍♀️. I realized after I grew. So I completely understand what you mean.

Washed

If you have time and interested i think you should watch the live stream concert it’s really cool the way the stage is and everything

Vambie_Reacts

omg I completely forgot about that! Thank you🙌🏻🫶🏻

Vambie_Reacts

The way I got chills reading your comment I love synchronicities like that! I knew it was Ludacris, but I had no idea that is who presented him with his first Grammy 🥹 thank you for telling me!🙌🏻

Ray

i’m pretty sure his mom is not dead, i think that’s just something his grandma told him so he wouldn’t keep waiting for her

Robert Flom

Your recognizing Too Short from Blow the Whistle and Shake That Monkey is awesome, both of those songs are bangers. Too Short is one of the most OG rappers out there still making music - his debut album was back in 1983 and his popularity peaked from like 1989 to 1992 or so. His music does tend to lean towards the misogynistic, but back in the day he released some more conscious-sounding stuff (the song The Ghetto probably most notably). Bay Area legend.

KWarfield

Baby Keem on Savior Interlude fits so perfectly with this project. Relistening to that after watching the videos and listening to his album you can see the picture so vividly of what he was saying in that song.

Aidan

Keem is such a good producer. I wish you would’ve liked House Money more but I see why you didn’t like the lyrics very much. I’d love to see you react to The Melodic Blue at some point soon :)

KWarfield

He has a line in his song Naked Freestyle on the previous album “I’m dodgin the drugs, but havin the women cause I am the son of an —“ he doesn’t finish the line which would finish with addict. This line makes a lot of sense the way he refers to his relationship across the album and his life.

Scotty

Kendrick saying “ never knew a love love love like this” come from Common on a classic uplifting love song called the “the light”

Nathan

So I’m guessing the Dre ft Kendrick video has moved to Sunday??

Savaun Lollis

did i just hear you're doing a Frank Ocean reaction??!!

Gregory Smith

its so crazy in the documentary to see Baby Keem as a kid happy listening to Ludacris in the car and then Ludacris later on his handing him a grammy. Crazy full circle moment

Isaac

I think it's crazy that a good amount of Kendrick and Keems family just migrated from Chicago to LA lol

Jeffrey Garcia

Also, I really appreciate your thoughts on the threads of misogyny that stick out throughout and make it uncomfortable. Someone put it better than me above, but I think there's a lot of healing Keem will need to do re: his relationships to women and that the art form needs to explore. I've been a teacher, seen a lot of boys that end up holding a lot of casual misogyny despite having women in their lives, or have trouble relating on some level.

Isaac

okay no one said it yet so I will, Die For My B is a mixtape from 2019, at this point Keem had already worked with Kendrick on DAMN and on Black Panther. He has also already produced for Beyonce. He's saying that his mom was homeless during this era. Crazy.

JB

Yeah a lot of families from their side of Cali are transplants from Chicago, Texas, etc. haha

delgadothegreat

I’ve had “good kid maad kitttyyy” stuck in my head all day lmao

Fay

The big parental advisory sticker over his baby picture is a double entendre

Isaac

me again from the end of the reaction 🙂 I honestly think Dramatic Girl is somehow in some weird way about his mom.. I think he even says something similar in one of his interviews.

Vambie_Reacts

omg 😹 I want to say I'm sorry, but it has quite literally been stuck in my head since I accidentally said it in one of my reactions last summer, and now I feel like I have someone here with me stuck in this😹

Vambie_Reacts

YES! Frank Ocean is the next artist deep dive we are doing :D First reaction (nostalgia ultra) will be posted on April 12th 🙌🏻

Jadon David

This is what I was thinking too

Luvsic

Incredible reaction for an incredible album, keep it up! If you wanna keep going down the emotional route, i HIGHLY recommend "Ugly" by Slowthai. While Slowthai himself has had some... Controversial moments to say the least, i think it's one of the best, most impactful albums of the 2020s

algorerhythm

I hadn't watched the Booman episode that shows him recording part of the song, so when I first heard in on the album I actually had to check the credits, it's unreal how much he sounds like Andre

algorerhythm

I'm pretty sure the different names for credits thing is just labels/distributors not being consistent when they enter that info into the metadata for streaming uploads. I don't think there's any intentionality behind it most of the time.

Miss Liss

Loved the reaction as always! If you have time there’s a 1.5 minute clip of his Grammy speech for Family Ties. It’s such a full circle moment because Ludacris (who we see Keem light up dancing to as a baby in the car) presents the award. Even if you don’t react to it I think you’d enjoy checking it out on your own!!

Tessara Dudley

Yeah, at the release party he said something about her just getting out of rehab. So I’m pretty sure that she was/is still alive.

Tessara Dudley

1:29:33 A lot of people I’ve seen assumed this meant his uncle was pimping his mom at one point. Someone else in the comments here said it means giving her alcohol. There’s no theory either way on Genius, and I haven’t seen him address it specifically in any interview, so this one may remain up to personal interpretation. But you also may recall that we see Hykeem’s mom exchanging something with a man for money in Booman II, and there’s a lot of ambiguity about what exactly that interaction was. And it may even be a double entendre.

Tessara Dudley

This is my first Keem album, and I get the sense that this has less misogyny than his previous work, and it seems like he may be working through it. Additionally, this album comes after a long gap during which his grandmother passed, and he expresses a lot of love and ambivalence both for his grandma and his mom in this album. (The day before Kendrick won those five Grammys for Not Like Us, his aunt Sharon—Keem’s grandma—died, and he mentioned it in his speech accepting Record of the Year.) During the album release listening party, Keem mentioned his mom had checked herself out of rehab while he was working on the album, and he was worried she might relapse, and that’s reflected in some of how he talks about her. So it seems that his mom was/is still alive, and that his grandma might have lied to him about her dying in order to help him let go of his fear/anxiety/stress regarding her presence (or lack of) in his life; perhaps not her best choice, but probably not out of malice or anything like that. Not trying to excuse Keem for the busted ways he talks about women here, but just to note that he’s openly working through stuff here. (And with KDot in his life, I hope he can get himself in a healthier, happier place, eventually.)

Salt

Me being keems age and seeing his story and especially him dancing so happily to Ludacris warmed my heart. Ludacris is the rapper that started my love with rap music. Im proud of him like I know him haha

Smith

Would love if you would react to the music videos from this album!
