As the father of a two year old boy, Will has been watching A LOT of Pixar's CARS trilogy. And the Dad Crew is sick of hearing about it! So for this MBIC, they've given him the floor -- once and for all -- to air every CARS take he can manage. Ka-Chow!

Jay

the cars lore is deeply fascinating and troubling if you think about it for too long.

Ella Thompson

I have a four year old brother and I need to hear the opinions from someone else who has watched a lot of Cars

Juve

This feels like the end of a saga

Lienisaur

Before I listen, I keep having the question how cars originate. Are they born or made? And if they are made, is there a class systeem to decide who is a transport car?

Taco Dragons

I went in to this wanting to hate this MBIC idea. I come away from it thoughorly(sp?) entertained.

Z C

I loved that shampoo bottle! I was always able to shampoo on the go!

OfficerDoofy13

Chick Hicks is by far the best part of Cars lmao

Nicholas Gay

The fact that the twins "flashed" Lightning in the first movie didnt come up during the "windshield eyes" portion of this discussion is wild to me.

Jake Viaene

Cars 2 makes Cars 3 look like Cars 1

IllustriousNobody

i love how passionate will has become about his son’s interests, it’s really funny how heated he got😂😂

Jacob Black

You think someone is going to mention to the daddies that possum on TikTok or Instagram that makes human versions of the cars and does Yaoi ships of them?

Walker

Why does it seem like everyone is talking about Cars now?? My coworkers and I literally just had an hours long conversation a few days ago about the trilogy, now I'm seeing it everywhere!

Aaron Nier

Love this so much. Really thought they would have a deeper dive into the implications of the Pope-mobile (the Catholic church in universe, the existence of the pope-mobile implies this pope also survived an assassination attempt, etc). The TSA security measures (taking off wheels in place of shoes) in Cars 2 also implied a 9/11 type event happened too.

Octavia MacIsaac

Wow that's more than I ever thought I'd know about Cars. Did I need to...no 😂

Richard Trauma

Isn’t Cars just the kids version of To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar

ariona leilani

my little brother (currently 6) was obsessed with cars as a toddler and i vividly remember him being 2 and me being 20 and while visiting my family everyone fell asleep while cars was on and despite having seen it so many times already, something about the first cars movie ending being watched at like 1 am while my 20 year old self was visiting my family made it hit SO hard and i was SOBBING

Ace Hutson

This is a top tier MBIC

Richard Trauma

A car pope implies a car Jesus. A car Jesus implies a car crucification

William Livingston

I’m so glad Will is bringing to light how awesome Cars 2 is

Kim Barbaria

Larry the Cable Guy = total fake. 😹 Can’t wait for Will to enter his Phineas & Ferb era in a few more years!

Waywardscientist

You can’t knock Dan Whitney’s hustle, that rusty truck made him a with a B billionaire

Justin Heurtematte

My daughter and I listen to the frozen 2 soundtrack daily and she says "I wanna hear Olaf scream" when referring to the song "when I am older" I love how she labels things

Cristina

Shit now I gotta go watch Cars.

Corkboard Podcast Network

Will, if you read this, I hope you put this episode on a USB drive and set it aside for Andy when he turns 18.

Mar

As someone who’s adhd brother was OBSESSED with cars growing up in childhood, objectively the second movie was the best movie. Will is correct 🤩

Samuel Davis

I feel like Cars 1 is just the plot of the first Thor movie: Man on the track to greatness finds himself lost in desert town, learns what it means to care about others, profit

Daina Scully

listen i had a nanny kid who was cars obsessed so there was a good 2-3 years where i watched cars at least 3 times a week (with cars 2 sprinkled in a few times a month, for flavor) and when i saw cars 3 i legit was just as car pilled as will and i was like this. SUCKS. everyone was going on about how much better it was than cars 2 but i was like straight up false this movie blows. cars 2 is an insane movie but at least it’s FUN

Daina Scully

ALSO WILL DID U KNOW THAT THE DISNEY PLUS VERSION OF CARS IS EDITED AND MISSING A FEW BITS FROM IT??? FOR CENSORSHIP???? please i must know

Daina Scully

ahem i think you mean that thor is just cars, cuz cars preceded thor by 5 years 🤣

Leo Hall

I only liked cars 1

Cameron Shook

Will needs to watch Planes next so we can have a real discussion of the Cars universe.

V Gore

I'm the opposite of Anthony, this made me want a kid. I've never wanted to be a parent but this made me want to.

Keira Jade

Will, you sold me on the Sally/Mater into Sally/Mater/Lightning throuple. I like Cars now.

Keira Jade

Also, WALL-E and EVE are a butch/femme lesbian couple and nobody can change my mind

james L

i died when he was like "then lightning finds out but he's kinda into it"

ant

Hope Beth is ok!

Anna Helling

will is so right. as a kid i used to watch cars 2 once a month. it was like crack to me

SentientHaze

Loved this but also tricked myself into thinking it was going to be a cars story break before listening 😔 rip

Maia Woods

new emotional support mbic

Elizabeth Patience

I love listening to my favorite podcast: “Cars Talk”

Alyssa Brake

Dying at the ships section of this MBIC 😂

Sabrina Saylor

is this the forum where i tell everyone i've been running a blog called dirtycarsconfessions for over 10 years (it's kinda dead now but in its prime it was so good)

Cam and Ed's Geek Radio

As a parent of a 4 year old obsessed with the Trolls movie, it was delightful to listen to another parent talking about their deep dive thoughts about a movie they've seen a billion times because of their kid.

ChanceyPants

The existence of a popemobile implies the existence of a pope assassination attempt

Marie-Claire Bovet

Okay. Okay. This is for Will 1. Will: I hope to add to your Cars 3 experience since you will have to watch it atleast 200 more times: 1. I didn’t think it was just old versus new. The new generation of cars were specifically “data driven” cars - digital natives sort of (gen z). The “McQueen generation” were the cars were ‘raised’ in the physical, non digital world. But they had all the benefits of the experience of the generations before them (very fast engines). And then the ‘old cars’ were gen x I think. 2. Cruz didnt become a racer because nobody believed in her, and she was afraid to find out if they were right. Ofcourse she should have taken her chance, but I thought her “failure to take that chance” was very relatable (spot on, Beth, with the systemic inequality remark). BUT it is also a teachable moment: 1. You more often regret the things you didnt do than the other way around. 2. Everyone makes mistakes, even likeable protagonists. 3. Some mistakes are easy to repair. Others might be forever. And sometimes, you’d need a little help from a friend. 3. McQueen, after the crash, needed Sally to first give him space and then nudge him in the right direction (which is fine but she doesn’t get much credit for it, screen time wise). I read about the “the burden of Mann keeping” today and I think is is a good example of a one-way emotional relationship. The old lady car was also a missed opportunity. 4. He then wanted to train like the new generation of cars. But he didnt have the patience to start at the bottom again because… (he didnt want to learn from someone who wasn’t a “real race car”. (But what is a REAL race car?). So that failed. Cruz was very patient and flexible, but missed REAL experience (prizes AND outdoor skills, vs treadmill racing……) and that annoys McQueen. 5. Thunder Hollow is een REAL race on a REAL track, which McQueen thinks is will be his quick fix (like peeing against a tree instead of holding it in until you find a safe place to pee). But he doesn’t know its something insane, so it is a mistake, from which they learn though. But also reveals some qualities that they they didnt know they had (but they needed the older, smarter generation to point that out to them, because they are older, and wiser). 6. He then goes from new gen tactics (indoor treadmills and data) to super old tactics. That gen X didnt have the best engines, nor data, so they had to be smart. The oldies teach them BOTH some physical and mental tricks, but also to spot their own and others weaknesses and strengths. 7. Cruz follows him in this, not because she is weak or has no agency, but because she is curious and helpful, and open to new ideas. 8. McQueen (like Will ?) feels it is her own fault she didnt become a racer. It is not until the end game race, that he hears how devastatingly she is treated by a white male that he feels he needs to make something right, because - I think - he realises that standing up for yourself might be harder than he thought if the balance of power is so devastatingly unequal. 1. I feel this is a problem that causes a lot of millennials to burn out. We were raised by parents who told us we could be anything if only we really tried our hardest. But then, at the end of our twenties, we realise it doesn’t always work like that. You can work your ass of, try your absolute hardest, and still fail. And we feel it is our own fault. It takes more than a lot to break a glass ceiling. If you try really hard, and are very brave, but apparently not brave or strong enough because it doesn’t work for some reason, where other heroes did succeed, does that make you weak? I hope not. Does that make it your own fault that you didnt succeed? No. Its the ceiling ultimately that’s at fault, not the person who wasn’t a hero. 9. But I agree: the themes are not for the kids, but for the parents I think 10. Also agree: worlds don’t have to make sense. The story is more important I think because all fictional worlds probably don’t work. As long as it doesn’t mess up the story. As long as the rules - the ones that have been established as important - are consistent. 11. Mcqueen also has the journey of assuming a new role as mentor. The learned that his mentor loved that more than being a star, and he realizes that that might be the case for him too - so a next step of growing up. Finding jou in seeing others succeed and not being the center of attention anymore. Like, i felt when my son was born, like the copernican revolution: the universe didnt revolve around me - the earth anymore, but the earth around the sun (my son) and that his joy is even more fulfilling. 2. YES! Can we have an MBIC analysing kids movies more often? This is one of the things I love about being a mom: reading and seeing new and old stories so often that you start analysing them (usually, only my husband is interested in these discussions, weirdly). This made me obsess over Paddington 1 and 2 and even on the 100th watch I still so much appreciate the decor, the puns, the use of color (mostly blue and red in P1) as a symbol. 3. Planes 1 sucks (although John Cleese made me cry) but planes 2 is really fun (also cried multiple times especially because of the Yellowstone feels) - you an tell the creators had a lot of fun making it I think. (The ultimate ‘the-creators-had-lots-of-fun-you-can-tell-and-that-makes-this-a-great-movie is ofc. Shrek and I stand by it: Shrek the third holds up like all third movies hold up in a Goldilocks kinda way. (I typed out this comment on a note on my computer, there the numbers made sense)

TheAnntagonist

As someone with a one month old and a degree in creative writing, this warmed my soul in a peering-into-my-future sort of way. Thanks, Will

Mary

OKAY— So I was born in 2000– my roommate (01 baby) has a hyper fixation with Cars. We have had so many debates about Cars and so I have several things to bring up— 1. What constitutes the Car— cause Lightning McQueen can change his tires, hub caps, etc. and still be Lightning- what makes him who he is? Could he change his body? his engine? When would he no longer be himself? I ask this because Lightning is like a 2003 (?) model Car. Is he 3 in the Film? Tow Mater is based on like a 1950’s model car— is Tow Mater 50 and Lightning 3 years old during the course of the first film?? Doc Hudson is a 1951 make— and he dies before the second film— is Tow Mater just really tough for an old guy???? Could this potentially not be Lightning’s first body?? If so how much Lightning can change before he is no longer the same car?? Especially because Lightning is “old” by the 3rd film?? Also Franchesco has a mother who is a similar model? like racing cars both— so what?? is LIGHTNING MCQUEEN A BABY?????????????? EXPLAIN???? I fucking hate these movies because I KNOW I KNOW DISNEY DID NOT CARE BUT there are so many thing that they REFUSE TO ADDRESS! 2. 9/11 happened, they go through TSA and we know the car Pope has a Pope Mobile so there was an attempted Pope assassination?? so like the idea thats its post apocalyptic and the cars are like idk mimicking the humans they were before the apocalypse??? no no I posture that this is universe where cars LIVED AND EXISTED THROUGH a facsimile of human history but cars and there is car evolution there were dinosaur cars— and while we never address it there is 100% Cars (tm) that predate cars as we know them like horse and buggy cars donkey cars a jesus car that is something we could never picture and i want to know so much more and Disney does not care and I’m gonna fucking kick rocks.

Mary

3. IF IF (and again I posture that Car history was just a parallel universe where Cars lived throughout history the entire time no humans ever) IF humans existed when did human history end and cars history begin? like post 9/11? and all the car history before that was fabricated?? im gonna scream

Mary

4. Car penis are internal and just pop out when they mount like dogs

Mary

5. They make jokes about “flashing” i.e. headlights are boobs which means all cars have tiddies and those tiddies are out and the trunk is the asshole— Sally has a tramp stamp— butt antlers— and so i guess the trunk is the butt cheeks and the inside is the butthole

Connor Cardinale

But Will what’s your opinion on Car Butt by Scoochie Boochie

Wildshaping

Please, I need the gang to play Rapid and the Righteous by Grant Howitt in the Cars Universe

Keith Rodriguez

The audacity to leave out the lemon party joke

Frankie Covington

Freddy with the tongue/tailpipe comment made me laugh so hard I almost threw up

Hampus Siöland

What we have learned from this MBIC is that Will's son has a better taste in movies than Will does.

CMD56

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT NO ONE MENTIONED THE GROUPIE CARS "FLASHING" LIGHTNING MCQUEEN

James Edward Antley IV

Freddie doing the 'Mater birds-and-bees impression had me bustin'...out laughing

Lukeoftheirish

Can we get something like this, but Walkie Talkie Copy That (how did this get made) about the movie HellDriver?

Thorn02

I don't know if anyone will see this but I really hope Wiil and Matt do. My daughter is about the same age as Wills son. I don't know what it is but like Matt's daughter, my own daughter is super into Toy Story. Anyways I noticed in the first Toy Story when Buzz and Woody fight at the gas station, it's a Dinoco station. The same sponsorship Lightning McQueen was seeking is the first Cars. I thought this was really cool and wonder whatever connections anyone else noticed naturally.

basil moore

now i wanna hear will rank spider-man movies

William W.

i think the main reason the cars eyes aren't their headlights is cuz they are canonically their Nipples since 2 cars flashed McQueen

Trombone boys

If there is a car pope is there car god also why did no one talk about the wasabi scene in cars 2 that was the funniest thing in the world when I was a toodler

Sierra Dawson

The pizza truck from the toystory movies is all over the Pixar movies. It's a really fun tidbit

elvy c:

I love this, I’ve loved cars since i was a kid 1 & 2 are fire and 3 made me feel old so I disliked it lol

Gregbusinessman

Finally some appreciation for how hard Cars 2 goes. Much like Shrek, the first one is a better movie, but the second is more fun. That’s it

Trombone boys

Ok acutually looking back on it cars 2 came out 2011 I was way to old to be luaghing that hard

Kaiberly Cournoyer-Rowland

Not me looking up Larry the Cable Guy, and finding out both of our birthdays were yesterday…. Ewwwwwwww

Alex McCaull

I think they got made and "grew" up like how they do it in Robots. That's at least how I've thought about it. 🤣

Anthony Monachino

I don't know why but I feel let down that as much as they got close to cars and sex, there was not one mention of a rim job. It was right there. But maybe it was too obvious?

Samuel Nachman

Lol let's keep this on Rampart please -Beth

Raf Jansen

I love the Cars 2 movie. I had the Cars 2 game for the PS3 and it's among my most played games

JiM the GM

What if yall did the Broken Lizard movies! Beer Fest! Super Troopers! Club Dread! Slammin' Salmon!

Charleen Lamphere

Okay, but what about "the twins" in the first movie that "FLASH" McQueen. 🫢

Justin Batalden

Im so glad my toddler wasn't the only one torturing their parents with Cars Series.

Hannah C

coming back to this in late may because while scrolling through the butch/femme tag on ao3, i was intrigued to find that genderswapped butch!doc/femme!lightning is a very popular ship. will was onto something and now i might watch cars again
