First after show in a while that like half of them are gone

Louis Frohock

I’ve been waiting for this all week

michel pizzuto

Went to see Beth's show on Saturday and it was fantastic, really cool to learn more about her and what she's been through, and of course she was funny as hell! I've been recommending it to everyone I know and I'm sure she'll do great during the rest of the Fringe 😊

Lee

Did the same thing in London last year was chest pressing 25kg dumbbells not thinking about the conversion just thought I was getting weak

CliftonH_VA

A couple of other stories that if recommend are thr Artemis Fowl series and the Bartimaeus series. Their a bit different than normal fantasy but still very fun.

Big Ballz McGee 9001

Discworld books are fantastic for 12+. The Tiffany Aching / Amazing Maurice books are specifically for younger readers, but really any of them are good!

Adepko

For the fantasy books I reccomend Eragon series by Christopher Paolini, the book series The Old Kingdom by Garth Nix and the classic of Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan. I loved those when I was a kid. :)

Story

Scythe is another great YA series.

Schuyler

E.T, death by cop

Nathan Rodriguez

Pendragon is series I started reading in 6th grade and kept up till it finished. I recommend it. Kid friendly enough

DankLord420

Matt has literally mentioned the Butter Battle 5 times on Story Break and 3 times on Daddies and some how Freddy has still never heard of it

Tony Loch

Oh I read the Artemis fowl series as a kid, I thought it was great. Don’t think I finished it; fell out when I got too old. It also lost me with time travel

Jam Jamothy

if anyone is looking for kid's fantasy book recs, rick riordan's blog has good recommendations and your local library probably has good ya fantasy collections either on their website or in person

Hana and Theo Tar Technoblade Brouse

The How to Train Your Dragon books are incredible for that age!! I was obsessed with them!! Def worth checking out. They're funny and cleaver and kind and delightful!

jen Rogue

I good group of books of young fantasy novels is from Terry Pratchett Discworld. He has a series about a young girl becoming a mud witch.

xatlern

Mothman may be dead, but Moth Jesus will rise again 🙏

CliftonH_VA

I feel both justified in my suggestion and called out for commenting before finishing the pod. 😅

Joshua Morales

So what's this thing about yall collaboration with critical role and daggerheart? Some youtube channel mention yall I. Their video today

Elizabeth Jefforson

Fuck yeah Redwall! Beautiful food descriptions and oddly solid action scenes with p decently solid deaths. Loved reading those in fifth grade!

Noah Koehler

You all including the cast of dungeons and daddies should check out Levin thumps and the gateway to foo series

SonOfABoofo

Remember in the bard camp one shot when Anthony made fun of Matt when he wasn’t there? Matt finally got him back!

DjTravioli

Take it leave it... most Hugh Grant movies are pretty mid.

Linds

Yes to His Dark Materials! I re-read them this year as an adult and they've really held up.

TheAnntagonist

Enchanted Forest Chronicles! Perfect wonderful fantasy!

lizardqueen6969

Trader Joe's employee here, we have crumpets! Lol in Massachusetts atleast not sure about California

SonOfABoofo

Matt, I liked your thumb joke

sarahndipity

i can’t wait to hear about Matt’s thoughts on Sunrise on the Reaping!

Kaiddance

lol Matt you want to live in Scotland, but you need to stop breaking glass display cases first. 😅😅

Ashe

Question what is the collaboration with critical role?!?!

Noelle Bartley

I know you said Miramax but I had thought you said Mirror Mask, where my Mirror Mask heads at😂

Erika Salazar

The Percy Jackson books are perfect for 12 year olds. A Series of Unfortunate Events too but that's not really fantasy. And Animorphs is really good

Aaron W

For weeks after seeing Secret Window, my father-in-law would say "You stole my story, Mr Rainey" with that weird twang, to whoever was around. 🌽

Mason Reeze

Did will have another kid?!

Aaron W

I was super into Daniel Pinkwater's books at a young age. IIRC they're all weird magic fantasy that use the 20th century as a jumping-off point.

Matt Baxter

What was the joke that Anthony made that Freddie shouted from the school bus?

Cripion101

In the patreon straight up "listening to it" . and by "it" well lets justr say. my peach pits.

HD

Freddy I love you but for fucks sake stop talking over Beth!

Daniel Roberts

The jackal!!! Jack black death scene... so good

Beck

BOOK SERIES REC! THE UNDERLAND CHRONICLES!!!! They’re so so so good I wish they’d get big budget movies made out of them like Harry Potter or something 😭

Beck

They’re also Suzanne Collins! My absolute favorite book series of all time!

Patrick Grinder

This stand up makes me feel better about myself as a person

Byl

Love hearing that Alison Zatta and Riley Rose Critchlow from RHODnD are part of your crew @Beth May! Love the crossovers!

petra

Fantasy series that I lovedd as a 12-year-old (besides howls moving castle and his dark materials) The inheritance cycle, the wind singer trilogy and Septimus heap series

Arielle

As a fantasy loving former little girl, I cannot recommend Tamora Pierce highly enough! Also Seanan McGuire has written some kids lit under the pen name A. Deborah Baker. Once she's old enough, Seanan's other works also get my highest recommendation. Other books I read as a kid include The Book of Mordred by Vivian Vande Velde and similar Arthuriana retellings.

Remiremi

I believe they’re doing a daggerheart oneshot

Tannictor

I started putting oatmilk in my vanilla chai so good.

Ashe

Oh, that sounds fun

Oskar Håkansson

i would recommend skulduggery pleasant as a good harry potter alternative. it is a little bit darker than HP but it is still a great series. also anything by Brandon Sanderson is great. Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians is great for younger people but every book is great

Scloop

Redwall!!!!

liam morin

amen give it three eps

Miri

Beth! We were in the audience for the 2nd preview on Thursday you were talking about in this episode. It was great to see you live especially in such an intimate venue. Matt is absolutely right, when you forgot the line it came across as endearing and relatable, and it was a preview show so we were prepared for the possibility of something going wrong. During our visit we saw other preview shows which were suffering technical issues much worse, but were still fantastic shows. If you've got time, see if you can check out Relay and Degenerate, they're both also at Pleasance Courtyard and seem like the kind of things you might enjoy. - Harry & Miri

It's Turnip Time

Yall should read another Suzanne Collin’s series… The Underland Chronicles. First book titled Gregor the Overlander. Great series I just read bc my partner recommended them based on reading them when they were 10

Cristina

Can't believe I forgot this dropped today

Zack Bochman

64 degrees is shorts weather where I live.

Terminal Velocity

Thank you for mentioning Redwall, I was yelling it at my car before you guys finally brought it up. I read the first one in middle school, and the last one came out my senior year of college, which I read on the back porch of my house in college.

Adam Parker

Percy Jackson always a good one

Adam Parker

Beth drop pg tips go for Yorkshire tea

Peter Whyte

Beth! Ticket is bought imma be there 22nd!!! Super excited!

Statik Skeletor

The Deltora Quest series was foundational fantasy story telling for me growing up

lovo

Among the Hidden is FANTASTIC! My 4th & 5th grade teacher read the series to us throughout the school years- kept the attention of 27 kids AND helped us think critically about laws and systems 🤘🏻

Marcus

This is my go to book recommendation but everyone needs to read The Underland Chronicles. It’s Suzanne Collins debut series. It’s a fantasy about a boy and his baby sister falling into an underground society full of talking animals and getting wrapped up in a series of prophecies. It might just be nostalgia but I’ve always preferred that series over The Hunger Games

Halophyte

Where are my Tamora Pierce stans at? Or Jonathan Stroud? Garth Nix?

Paul McFetridge

Just bought three tickets for Beth's show, looking forward to it!

Jonathan Deans

Beth - use the gym next to waverley station, it's in kg and lb

Taylor Martin

the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke used to be my favorite growing up!! I recently read a bit of the first book and it still holds up!

Valyra

am I crazy or is it 24 minutes until episode 31 comes out

Amatiramisu

Septimus Heap series is my comfort series for children's fantasy. Also def recommend the last dragon chronicles for some nice modern fantasy

Tony Loch

Completely forgot about this series. Really enjoyed the first two. Found out there is a third but I never read that one.

Tony Loch

As a teen, I personally loved the lost years of Merlin saga. They cover a time period of Merlin’s early youth, which not a lot do. Absolutely great series. Also. They’re not exactly “teen”, but if you’re looking for a good fantasy series, try the Bronze Canticles, by Tracy and Laura Hickman. Phenomenal series. Read them as a teenager, they’re great.

Thomas C2

The “We’re All Going To Die” daddies crew! I loved the movie btw

Kester S

+1 on Inheritance cycle. It's a shame the Eragon movie was quite so bland, as the books were perfect for me at that age

Kester S

100% The Old Kingdom series (albeit I grew out of them by book 4 so not sure after that), and the Eragon/Inheritance series is great too

k0nami_kid

Dungeons and Daddies more like Dungeons and Baddies

k0nami_kid

Also - I loved the secret garden as a kid, not sure if it still holds up but worth checking out for little kiddos!

Liam Hansson

I really like Eion Colfer as a writer. Not just the artemis fowl books, I like the others more. Like heaven and hell

Adepko

I read the old kingdom series for the first 4 books when I was around 13ish and I still should have somewhere at least the 5th book unread

Whachamacallit

Rise and Shadow of Kyoshi are excellent young adult books! Probably best to wait until the teen years tho

Nan McVicker

I loved eragon soooo much as a kid. Idk how it holds up, but is basically star wars with dragons in the first book. It gets better and more its own thing as the book goes on and I read those 4 books all through middle school. It was a bit of marathon though, longest books I've finished to this day.

Andrew Nelson

I loved Redwall growing up. They were the first audiobooks I listened to, and they ruined other audiobooks for me. Every character has a different voice actor, and the way they narrate really brings it to life. Imagine my disappointment to find out that not all audiobooks were like that and usually just had one narrator.

Wolf Note

The roughest part of that moment was I could have sworn that Mothman was on the list of people that she was not allowed to use the freebie for

Corkboard Podcast Network

*matt staring at himself in the mirror in a dark bathroom.* “I had to explain the Butter Battle book on the show today. Again.”

Thirrin

I was JUST about to recommend Septimus Heap!!

Thirrin

Septimus Heap series and the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Dealing with Dragons is the first book) were my favorites growing up! I reread the Enchanted Forest Chronicles like twice a year 💖

Amatiramisu

Okay that's crazy I actually just got into the enchanted forest books on a friends recommend like, a few months ago.

Thirrin

YOOO My school's library had the complete series, all with the 1st edition cover art made by Dalia Hartman and its my goal to have a full set with those specific covers, since they're so incredibly nostalgic for me

Kamala

mroe book recs: flora segunda, terry pratchett’s tiffany aching books, diane duane’s young wizards series

David Resoluth

It’s so funny hearing them talk about the sunrise & sunset in the ”north”. And kg, and °C vs °F. Living in the far, not too far north, north of Sweden, summer is light and winter is basically only dark, and regular summer is around 18-20° while winter is almost the opposite 😅 My personal favourite time: autumn-late autumn and -4°C; dark and cool like a perfect Coca Cola😎😂

Lorelei and Kyra Newly Weds

PlayStation controllers were made for children hands and people with small hands, precursors to growing up and moving to Xbox for teenagers and finally evolve to PC as adults

Natural Dragon

Dealing with dragons was one of my favorite fantasy books growing up. It’s part of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles.

Matthew Morse

Percy Jackson series, especially the sequel series “Heroes of Olympus” are great and fun and give you a nice little base knowledge on Greek myths and history

Matthew Morse

Completely with Freddie on the hot drink take, I’ve never understood it it always feels weird and off to have warm drinks.

Chelsey Main

YES! I kept my copies from when I was a kid for my kiddos because I loved them SO MUCH! Cimorene is such a fun character, independent and smart and so different from most female main characters in children's books.

Chelsey Main

The Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce is a great pick for your young reader, especially if she liked Chrestomanci (which, by the way, AWESOME books! Diana Wynne Jones isn't talked about NEARLY enough!). It has magical kids, learning to work together, making friends, all that fun stuff.

Gabi Lane

Wings of fire is a great option too! It’s a longer series and has great world development! And I second the tamora pierce rec! Tricksters choice and the Alana quartet are awesome!

Eddy B

Literally no episode talk haha love it

Craig Murray

100% on Artemis Fowl on the book chat. Read the first when I was 13 and it blew my mind at the time. First three were great

Nowaey

Still so good

Rachel Wilson

Edin-buh-ruh! Or Edinbruh. Beth’s got it! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Gooey Bungus

The talk of young reading got me to restart The City Of Ember. Read in almost 16 years ago

Douglas Underhill

Maybe helpful, maybe not, but Akata Witch is the first book in a series that is similar to Harry Potter but 1. smarter and 2. based on Nigerian culture and folklore :)

the lubricated eldritch rat

a really underrated ya book that i never see anyone talking about its "down the mysterly river" (spelled like that) by bill watterson, genuinely jaw dropping world building with a twist at the end that was so beautifully set up but that i never saw coming

Anna Krohn

I came to the comments to suggest Dealing with Dragons! Glad someone else did too!

Seth Scott

Did you say Richard Gere because of Mothman Prophecies?

Seth Scott

I love Secret Window

MooRoo25

I loved Tampra Piece books. My favorite (still have my original copies) The Immortal Series about a girl that can talk to animals. Or Tricksters choice maybe

MooRoo25

My other favorite food for young adults is from Suzanne Collins is Gregor the Overlander series. She wrote it before Hunger Games and it is so good!! I loved it and oh! another series called Ranger's Apprentice. Some fun fantasy series from my bookshelf lol

UrdnotVick

Percy Jackson and its continued sequels. Heroes of Olympus, Trials of Apollo. 12 is a good age to start, especially progressing you child grows with the characters.

BaydaShark

In the UK, 18 degrees C is kinda warm. Its cold at 10 and below lol

Taco Dragons

I know I'm late commenting on this but Ranger's Apprentice. Dude wrote it as a story to share with his son. It's probably one of my favorite Middle Grade stories series that I've went through.

Beth Sophia

Garth Nix is a good author. My son and I read them together when he was a tween. The Ragwitch is my favorite, but I love dark fairytales. There are some longer series that are more adventure than horror

Lex

I was just yelling PERCY JACKSON the whole convo. That series shaped me as a person

Jonesy

I'd like to thank Anthony Burch for his puzzle recommendation, Magic Puzzles have been a GAME CHANGER in my household! In return I offer Pintoo brand plastic puzzles, sharp images and frame ready for a good price, and for the dedicated, Stump Craft wooden puzzles! Pricey, but SOOO gorgeous, and wood puzzles smell amazing 💕

Margo Rubero

Man, when I was 12 I LOVED the Eragon books. And now my 9 year old is equally in love with the series. AND there’s more of them coming out. So deff recommend Christopher Paolini’s inheritance cycle for kids. He was like 14 or something when he wrote the first book, so it was like perfect for that YA tween age group.

Margo Rubero

There’s a new one from Murtagh’s perspective - after the events of the first 4 books, and a book of short stories from the continent of alsgaesia too! Worth reading :)

Morgan D

True but in an air con hotel 18 is cold.

Alena

The Edge Chronicles were entrancing as a kid with the coolest illustrations. I’ve heard the audiobooks are really well produced and perfect for long car rides. +1 to Tamora Pierce. She was my favourite author as a teenager. I re-read a few of her series recently and they were just as brilliant as I remembered.

Ac3sH1gh

At Trader Joe’s rn stocking the shelves staring at the crumpets as they talk about crumpets

GoblinGuy

Howls moving castle as a book series is a great! The last dragon chronicles and ghostcoming are also pretty good according to a librarian friend

Marie-laurence Rivard-Fortin

What is the name of the book they were talking about? The one Matt's wife loves and have a destroyed copy of?

streetdreams

Bartimaeus and the Armulet of Samarkand and the other books in the series are absolutely great. By Jonathan Stroud. If anyone is still skimming the comments for recommendations xD

Shannon

All Tamora Pierce!

Jennifer Anne

Read The Princess and the Pony for any young girl who is still into picture books but likes fantasy. It’s about a young princess who wants a warriors horse but instead gets a fat little pony that farts a lot. Not for a 12 yr old but potentially Matt’s daughter

Maddie

I remember really enjoying the Children of the Red King books (The Charlie Bone series) by Jenny Nimmo. Maybe a little young for 12, but they're fun!

Gwen Remme

anyone remember the book silverwing? it was about bats, i remember reading as a kid in class and it was awesome

Laeticia

I was looking for this comment!! I ADORE Percy Jackson sooo much, last year I got a tattoo for it!!

Twig

For a good fantasy book and a Suzanne Collins my favorite is the Gregor overland series

Trevor Cassidy

Hey Freddie and Matt: I'm the first assistant at Oakmont CC in Glendale. Hmu if you want to play ⛳️

Stephen Espinosa

Oh man, this is such a great recommendation. Its hard to find adult fantasy thats more satisfying than RA.

Stephen Espinosa

“The Half of It” was a perfectly average movie that I recently watched and realized Id seen before but totally forgotten haha

Hayley Abramowitz

Big fan of the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane!!!!

Kaylavender

Fantasy/ magic series that i love and is YA is Akata Warrior ( the Nsibidi Script series) really good!

Aquatic Android

Fantasy recs: the Tamora Pierce books were huge for me when I was a middle school girl :) I also work with kids and a lot of them LOVE wings of fire by Tui Sutherland and Land of Stories by Chris Colfer. Also highly recommend Dragons in a Bag by Zetta Elliott!

BOPO

The warrior cats series was my obsession around that age

Goob Zone

"Continuity of Service like governments do".... wellllllp

Peachy

Not Certified Lover Boy 😭

JayeCat

YOOOO when you said Chrestomanci I literally said "YES" out loud to nobody. I loved loved loved those books as a teen and it's so rare that I ever find someone else who knows them

JayeCat

and I've just started Eathsea now as an adult, glad to know I'm on the right track

Zeroheroics

Terry. Pratchett. That’s all.

Michelle Morrison

You gotta try Alanna (Song of the Lioness). They’ve expanded the original series and there’s great graphic novels now too!
